Antarctica is a continent surrounded by oceans.

Antarctica is the remotest, most inhospitable and coldest place on Earth and consists of a large land mass and numerous offshore islands. Most of the mainland is covered by a vast ice cap, which breaks up at the coastline, forming huge icebergs upto 200km (125miles) long. Antarctica is covered with ice, which, on average, is 2000m (6562 ft) thick. You could probably sink Ben Nevis (Britains highest mountain) in it and still have around 657m (2156ft) of ice to spare. Antarctica is the only continent that has no permanent human population except for a few visiting scientists and engineers. Yet, its home to many rare animals, that you wouldnt find anywhere else in the world e.g. penguins, seals, whales, white rabbits, krills and birds. Antarctica is a desert. It gets very little rain or snow, but plenty of wind it covers an area 0f 5.5 million sq. miles. The highest point in the Antarctic is Vinson Massif at 5140m. Also the worlds lowest recorded temperature was recorded here at a very cold 89.2 degrees centigrade taken in 1983 at Vostok.
