School of Nursing in Mangalore The School of Nursing, Mangalore was started in the year 2006 as a constituent institute of Manipal

University and recognised by Karnataka Nursing Council and Indian Nursing Council. Currently SON, Mangalore has BSc. Nursing Programme with an intake of 100 seats. We provide excellence in nursing education, health care and commitment to human development. The institution has excellent infrastructure with state-of-the-art laboratories and teaching-learning activities. Nursing education in Manipal College of Nursing, Mangalore is supported by experienced teaching faculty with wide area of expertise in clinical, academic and social settings. Students are trained in basic science studies under the umbrella of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. SON Mangalore also has adjunct faculty from international universities. SON, Mangalore provides wide area of clinical practices at Kasturba Medical College Hospitals at Attavar and Ambedkar Circle. SON is also a centre for various Continuing Nursing Education Programmes. Furthermore, students get opportunities for overall personality development like value education and soft skills training.

Adequate attention is paid to the human dimensions of the nursing profession along with equipping the students with appropriate knowledge and skills. The students at SON are provided with all-round excellence encompassing a range of clinical, classroom and research experience.
Fundamentals of Nursing: The department undertakes training of undergraduate nursing students. Students receive training in basic nursing procedures, which help them to provide basic care to patients. Students are given training in developing basic skills in the laboratory on simulated conditions before they are exposed to the actual hospital situation. The faculty of the department provides good teaching- learning exposure to the students. Mental Health Nursing: Psychiatric nursing is a specialised nursing response to people experiencing problems between cognitive, behavioural or emotional functioning. The Department of Psychiatric/ Mental Health Nursing provides academic services and researches to promote mental health and prevent mental health problems of

people, their families and communities. The department continuously intervenes and rehabilitates patients with psychiatric problems and their families. It uses different theories of human behaviour as its scientific framework and requires the use of the self as its art or expression in nursing practice. The department under the experienced and dedicated faculty renders quality based education to the undergraduate students. The faculty assists them in developing expertise and in depth understanding in the field of Psychiatric nursing. It helps students to appreciate patients as holistic individuals and develop skills to function as psychiatric nurses and enable them to function as educators, managers and researchers in the field of psychiatric nursing. The Department is also committed to provide opportunities for professional growth, including a fully individualized orientation, support for participation in professional development activities and various in-service programmes for the faculty. Medical Surgical Nursing: The medical surgical nursing department caters to the need of the 2nd & 3rd year B.Sc. Nursing students. The aim of the department is to prepare the nursing students to become full-fledged professionals in providing comprehensive care to the individuals and enable the students to function as educators, managers and researchers in the field of medical surgical nursing. Outreach programmes are conducted every academic year to meet the needs of local community. The faculty members are highly motivated to pursue higher education and excel in their career. It also monthly invites CNEs to keep updated with knowledge and skill.
