This Directory of New Schools & New Programs will help to guide you through the next steps in the High School Admissions Process. This book contains information about the Round 2 admissions process and the new school and program options available in Round 2.
What is Round 2?
Round 2 is open to all high school applicants, even if you received a match in Round 1. During Round 2, you can apply to new small high schools and new programs opening in September 2013, and to any other high school options that have available seats. You should participate in Round 2 if you did not receive a match in Round 1. If you did not receive a match in Round 1, you will automatically move on to Round 2 and must submit a Round 2 application. To learn more about how to get an application and when to submit it, please see the How to Apply in Round 2 section below. are unhappy with your Round 1 match. If you receive a match in Round 2, it will take the place of your Round 1 match. Students with a Round 1 offer who reapply in Round 2 but do not get a match will keep their Round 1 offer. All students will have a high school match by the end of Round 2.
Explore Your Round 2 Options

Directory of New Schools & New Programs The schools and programs in this Directory are new options to which you can apply in Round 2 that were not previously available in Round 1. Some of the options in this Directory are new high schools that will open their doors for the first time this coming September; the other schools in this book are not new schools, but have new program options available for Round 2. New schools and new programs are identified on the top right corner of each school page. Round 2 Program List In Round 2, you can also apply to high schools with open seats. You can find all schools and programs offered in Round 2, including the schools and programs in this Directory, on the Round 2 Program List. You can get a copy of this list from your guidance counselor. On the Round 2 Program List, schools and programs are listed in alphabetical order by borough. The list shows the type of seat(s) available for each program: General Education, Special Education (which includes students receiving Integrated Co-Teaching or Special Class services), or both General Education and Special Education. You will also find the approximate number of seats available for each program. Check out the Directory of NYC Public High Schools 2012-2013 for detailed descriptions for all the schools on the Round 2 List . Round 2 Fair In addition to reviewing this Directory, you can learn more about your options by attending the Round 2 Fair. At the fair, youll be able to meet with representatives from Round 2 schools to find out more information about their programs. High school admissions counselors will be there to answer your questions. How to Apply in Round 2

After you have reviewed your options in this Directory and visited with schools at the Round 2 Fair, meet with your guidance counselor to get your Round 2 application and a copy of the Round 2 Program List. You will be matched to your highest possible choice subject to Admissions Methods, Admissions Priorities, and seat availability. The deadline for you to return your completed application to your guidance counselor is Friday, April 12, 2013.

Making Informed Decisions

As you review this Directory, keep in mind that each high school in this book has unique Admissions Priorities and Admissions Methods. When researching your options, think about how you will need to prepare for the programs you want to list on your application. Types of Schools Some new schools and new programs opening in September 2013 are designed for specific groups of students. These school types are indicated on the top of the school pages (when applicable): Career and Technical Education (CTE) Schools work in collaboration with colleges, businesses and industries. These schools offer a strong academic program, which is integrated with skills, knowledge and career preparation required by high-tech industries and various career fields. Students in CTE schools may also be eligible for State-approved and industry-sponsored career and technical education endorsements. International Schools are designed to provide a quality education for students with limited English proficiency who have recently arrived in the country. International schools have eligibility requirements regarding English Language Learner status and home language; make sure to review the Admissions Priorities. Transfer Schools are designed for students who have already attended high school. These schools are small, academically challenging, diploma-granting high schools designed to re-engage students who are over-age and under-credited. Eligible students must have been enrolled in a New York City public high school for at least one year and need additional credits in order to be promoted. A wide variety of learning styles and strategies are utilized to help students meet their personal and academic goals. Students interested in attending a transfer school should contact the school directly. Admissions Priorities Admissions Priorities list the order in which applicants are considered for placement at a school. Review the Admissions Priorities for each school to learn which applicants have the best chance of being matched to the school. For example, many new schools give priority to students who sign in at an information session, fair, or open house; these students will be considered for the school before students who did not attend an information session, fair, or open house. Admissions Methods Admissions Methods are the processes schools use to consider applicants for each program. The Admissions Methods youll find in this book are described below: Limited Unscreened programs give priority to students who attend a school-based information session, open house, or fair. You must sign in at these events in order to receive the priority. Screened: Language programs are for students with a minimum level of English language proficiency. Screened: Language programs include Bilingual, Dual Language, and International. Interested students must review the Admissions Priorities to ensure that they are applying to a program that matches their home/native language. Screened programs rank students based on their final report card grades from the prior school year, as well as reading and math standardized test scores. Attendance and punctuality are also considered. Review the Selection Criteria listed for each screened program to determine how closely you fit the criteria. Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities can apply to any of the schools and/or programs listed in this Directory, subject to the same admissions requirements as their peers. Once a student is accepted to a high school, the school will implement the students Individualized Education Program (IEP). The IEP team at the school will welcome the student and family, and collaboratively review the IEP to ensure that all of the students needs are met. In some cases, the IEP team may meet to modify the IEP s o it better meets the students needs. High school students receiving Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) or Special Class services will have individualized services per their IEP, and may receive combinations of these services for all or part of the day, as appropriate. Site Accessibility
Each schools Directory page indicates the Site Accessibility status of that school. There are three different Site Accessibility designations used in this Directory: Functionally Accessible A student who uses a wheelchair can, without difficulty, enter the building and access relevant programs and services. Partially Accessible The school is functionally accessible beyond the first floor, but not for all relevant spaces and services in the school. Not Accessible The school does not fall into either of the above-noted accessibility descriptions. Federal law requires that all programs, when reviewed in their entirety, are accessible. English Language Learners

The Department of Education provides a range of programs and supports to ensure that English Language Learners (ELLs) receive the language-based services necessary to excel in high school. Schools must inform parents of the three program models in New York City, whether or not the parents preferred model is currently offered at the school. Schools are expected to open a bilingual program when 20 families have selected it on the ELL Program Selection Form. Therefore, it is essential that parents/guardians indicate their preferred choice of program when completing the ELL Program Selection Form at their schools parent orientation meeting. Parents, not schools, determine which ELL programs are offered at schools. ELL program models are as follows: Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) programs provide language arts and subject matter instruction in the students native language and in English , as well as intensive instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL). As the student develops English proficiency, instruction in English increases and native language instruction decreases. Dual Language programs educate ELL students in need of English language instruction alongside Englishspeaking students who are interested in lea rning a second language. Programs continue to develop ELLs native language and English language skills while enabling English-speaking students to become bilingual as well. Both groups act as good linguistic role models for each other, and through their interactions, they support language development in both languages. Students receive half of their instruction in English and half in the target language. Freestanding English as a Second Language (ESL) programs provide all language arts and subject matter instruction in English using specific instructional strategies. Native language support is available to help students accelerate their understanding in subject areas. Native language assistance is supported by activities such as encouraging students to discuss subject matter with peers in the native language, allowing students to use the native language to write explanations of what they understand, and making native language textbooks, libraries, dictionaries, reference materials, and technology resources available for students to use in the classroom. Our students can earn both an academic Regents diploma as well as a Stateapproved technical endorsement in the Automotive trades. Our ninth grade program is a specifically designed schedule aimed at transitioning students into high school by providing additional academic support in both ELA and Math. Students immediately begin their career sequence in ninth grade with hands-on classes in their CTE program. Overview
At H.E.R.O. High, students learn how to save lives and serve their communities by preparing for a career as a Registered Nurse or Community Health Worker. Students take college classes starting in 10th grade and can earn a 2-year college degree with help from a small school environment. Our academic program will prepare every student to succeed in college and career through hands-on, realworld problem solving, advanced work in math and science, and challenging reading and writing tasks in every class. The Urban Assembly School for Emergency Management (UASEM) provides students with real-world learning opportunities. Students at UASEM have the unique opportunity to participate in career-related courses, internships, and emergency simulations with our partners FEMA, American Red Cross, Department of Homeland Security, and many more. With help from our partners, we develop curriculum and activities in Emergency Management that create a sense of personal responsibility and empowerment among our students, parents, and staff. Jump Start Academy Jump Start Academy is for all of our incoming 9th graders. The Jump Start Academy gives students the opportunity to begin their high school career in a smaller, more individualized learning setting. At the Academy, students are supported educationally and socially in making the transition from middle school to high school by having a guidance counselor monitor and support each students progress. Redu ced class size, extended day programs and summer credit accumulation classes will also support the students. Our teachers and an exciting interdisciplinary curriculum provide a rich instructional experience with additional literacy support and extended day services. The International High School for Health Sciences offers limited-English speaking students who are new to the country an opportunity to develop skills necessary to pursue college and careers in medicine.
