Social Studies 3rd

3-4.4: Summarize the course of the Civil War in South Curriculum Standard(s) Carolina including the Secession Convention, the firing on Fort Sumter, the Union blockade of Charleston, the significance of the Hunley submarine; the exploits of Robert Smalls; and General William T. Shermans march through the state.
I will begin the lesson by asking the students about the attack on Fort Sumter. A video about the attack will then be shown as a review of what they learned last week. I will then ask the students if they learned any new information from watching the video. I will then teach the presentation about South Carolina and three events that occurred in the Civil War (Union Blockade, Hunley Submarine, and Shermans March). During the presentation, the students will engage in discussion. Students will then be assigned the activity. At the end of the lesson students will be given a crossword puzzle to complete.

Description and Background Information

Materials Lesson Objectives

Teacher: laptop, star board, construction paper, markers, note taking worksheets, and crossword puzzle worksheet. Student: Pencil Students will be able to explain the Union Blockade, Hunley Submarine, and Shermans March. Students will also be able to explain the significance of each event. I will vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material by working with the students in small groups. During this time, I will reteach the information before the students are reassessed.

Varying Objectives for Individuals Needs

I will vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept by allowing them to participate in educational computer activities regarding the three events. They will also be able to research more information about the events. I will also use the students to assist me with those students who do not understand the material and students who are presently learning English. I will vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English by collaborating with the ELL teacher to find out a different way for me to possibly present the information to the students. I will also allow for those students who have already mastered the concept to pair with an ELL, so that they can help to explain the information and concept.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

I will ask the students to tell me any information regarding the battle at Fort Sumter. This will be a review of what was previously taught.

Pre-assessment Motivation(Hook) Statement of Purpose Teacher Modeling or Demonstration Guided Practice

The students will watch a video from pbs.org about the battle at Fort Sumter.

I will explain that South Carolina played a major role in the Civil War. I will also explain that it is important to know your states history. I will give an example of what the activity will look like. I will also explain in great detail so that they understand the activity.

I will guide the students in creating the event the activity that they will be acting out.

Checking for Understanding

Questions: 1) Why was the Union blocking the Confederate Coast? 2) Why were blockade runners important to the Confederacys war effort? 3) Was the Hunley Submarine successful in the Civil War? Why or Why not? 4) What were the effects of Shermans march? 5) Why do you think Shermans troops burned towns and plantations? During the lesson, students will use a note taking sheet to write down important information. I will also monitor students work and guide them where help is needed.

Independent Practice Assessment Closure

Students will be broken into groups. Each group will be assigned one of the three events. Each group will be given some time to brainstorm ideas of how to act out the event. Each group will act out their assigned event in front of the class. The rest of the class will have to guess the event that the group is acting out. A weekly assessment will be given. The assessment is attached. The class will review the major points that was discussed as a part of the closure. The concept for the next lesson will be introduced. What can students do at home or in the classroom to apply the knowledge or skills? What will you do to connect the lesson with the home, community and community agencies? Students will be given a crossword puzzle to complete. They could also go to the library and see if they are able to find any children books about the Civil War and South Carolina. A PowerPoint presentation will be used as a part of the direct instruction. Also a video will be used as the hook. English: Students can write a letter as if they were living during one of the events. Math: Students can compare the lengths of different battles within the Civil War. Science: Students can do research on the weapons used during the civil war and compare it to the weapons used in more recent wars. Art: Students can draw a map of South Carolina showing the path of the war throughout the war. Music: Students can learn a song that talks about the Civil War and listen to the kind of music during that time period. P.E.: Students can reenact certain battles.

PART III IMPLEMENTATION

Reflections
I believe that the video about Fort Sumter and the PowerPoint Presentation worked well in the lesson. The note taking sheet allowed for the students to follow along in the lesson. The students also enjoyed the role playing activity. They also seemed to grasp the significance of each event. If I could make any changes, I would give the students a word bank for the crossword puzzle. I might also have the students write their favorite fact that they learned as a closure and ticket out the door.
