Why is Ramadan special?

Ramadan is the month that the Quran was first revealed.

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'n, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the Criterion (between right and wrong).(2:185)

Ramadan is also special because the gates of Hell are locked and the devils are chained.
Abu Hurayrah reported Allahs Messenger (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: When there comes the month of Ramadan, the gates of mercy are opened, and the gates of Hell are locked and the devils are chained (Saheeh Muslim, #2361)

and Ramadan is special because we fast during this month and receive many blessings, insha Allah
So, whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan, i.e. is present at home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month (2:185)

Fasting also means to stay away from bad speech and bad actions such as lying, backbiting and cursing.

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said: If one does not abandon falsehood and other actions like it, Allah has no need that one abandon ones food and drink (Saheeh Bukhari)
