Mr. Alain Kenneth S. Ragay April 21, 2013 Karen and Her 3 Year of Nursing Chronicles

1. Highest Grade Subject and why? Liking a subject does not mean you'll ace it. I learned that the hard way though. In my first year, I'm really fascinated with nursing, for that I tried my best to top TFN, but then again I ironically aced English. Who would have thought of that painful turn of events? In second semester, I tried to memorize everything in Anatomy but to no avail. Instead, I got higher grades in Physical Education and Fundamentals in Nursing. It would seem like my efforts were put in vain while my instincts ruled. Despite my tortuous burning of my midnight candle, it seemed like my favorite subjects like English and Fundaments in Nursing have not taken a toll on me. Instead I studied them in ease since I feel no pressure in taking in the lessons as compared with the gruesome feeling I constantly feel during the lessons with my priority subjects. Same goes to my second year; I got high score in Nutrition and Philosophy despite the fact that these subjects pestered me. I am certain I cannot cook nor hit a ball without it hitting my face first. In short, I suck at sports and in the kitchen. I believe its either our teachers are totally compassionate or my theory and memory skills did work. In my third year, a lot has changed. My motivation in studying has dwindled from 100% to none. I no longer study when not in need. In short I cram a lot. I think my grade would likely look less horrendous in Palliative Care and Hospice. Maybe it's because death and dying among other concepts excite me. Or it is due to the fact that the concepts were simple, easy to understand and we had a jolly teacher as well. Despite all these subjects, my saving grace is my RLE grades. 2. Lowest Grade Subject and why? I think it is safe to enumerate these subjects that haunt me even in my sleep; Theoretical Foundation in Nursing, Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Medical Surgical Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing. These subjects were understandable however the exams were just very difficult to comprehend. To be honest, it was not all about the teacher factor, I myself had contributed to my failure in these subjects. These subjects made me really sleepy. I dont even know why but my serotonin level decreases the day prior to another long boring lecture. Hence, I cannot sleep the night before, to compensate I become drowsy in class. MS had been my wake up call. The subject become as erratic as our teacher thus, despite my efforts of studying, I can never keep up with it.

In general education subjects, Chemistry has become my downfall as well as Physics. It seemed that my innate idiot self cannot comprehend when problems involved numbers and letters. It was simply tormenting every time we had an exam. The teachers were really eager and their intelligence had been satisfactory but I was just dumb to understand what they meant. 3. Favorite subjects and why? I have always been fond of English and Maternal and Child in Nursing. English has satisfied my aspiration for writing while MCN has fulfilled my curiosity in the womans body as well as procreation. Medical Surgical Nursing came into second place since it dealt with diseases and their preventions. Because of this subject, I am able to answer my moms inquiry on a simple disease unlike before. I have become her personal adviser when it comes to drugs and disease consultation. It become somewhat exhilarating sometimes since this subject made me go through the needle hole just to pass; but this totally made me mind blown with information needed in real life situations. The teachers have been insightful and practical in teaching, thus, adding to my addiction towards this subject. 4. What are your study habits? Going back to my first and second year in college, I have become a very organized person. I used to spare some hours at night to study in advance not for the sake of upcoming exams. I used to study 3-4 hours at night within a quite environment. However, as my year level advances, lazy syndrome has increased with time as well. During my second semester in second year as well as the whole third year, my addiction to social networking sights got the best of me. Thus, I cram a lot. For some time it did me a lot good but there were subjects that cannot be satisfied with 30 minutes to an hour of studying prior to an exam. You may wonder why I get low scores, and then this must be the reason. But most definitely I still follow a certain pattern in studying. I reread our lecture notes twice. The first one is used to get the flow and basic highlights of the lesson. Second read, includes memorization and making of acronyms as well as application. This will take about four (4) hours straight at night if I am not that stressed. Early in the morning, say 1 AM, I reread the notes just to refresh my memory a little bit. This study session may include listening to music. I can study both to noisy and quiet environment since total silence makes me sleepy. I usually study while eating and riding a jeepney too. 5. What topics and activities do you like since first year to now which also enhance learning performance? Why? Since kinesthetic learner, I gain knowledge of lessons by doing things. Thus, the return demonstrations, laboratory exposures and clinical experiences have taught me a lot. Return

demonstrations in Fundamentals in Nursing as well as in Health Assessment had helped me to interact to patients catering their needs while doing my assessment. This has aid in my clinical exposures. Bed making, giving enemas and IM, subcutaneous injections were the best experiences I have ever had. I cannot forget how these seemingly simple yet crucial activities are that important to save a patients life and make his hospital stay convenient. The problem-based learning given by Mr. Suson has given me an opportunity to use extensive resources and critical thinking involving complicated patients whose diseases are from simple beginnings. This activity made me very keen in assessing. This also produced a greater deal of disease pathology, thus, making me knowledgeable in the disease process of each person as well as their diagnosis.
