This artwork is called Madonna mit dem langen Hals or Madonna With Long Neck in English. The artists name is Parmigianino who painted this in the Mannerism style. This pece of art was made in 1543 which is around the time other artist using this new Mannerism style began to come out. Many artist at this time included artist like Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo. This period emerged in the later part of the High Renassance until Baroque began to replace it. It was developed in both Florence and Rome and was noted for elongated forms, balanced poses, a collapsed perspective, irrational settings, and theatrical lighting. In Parmigianinos painting it shows elongated proportions, new styled poses, and no clear perspective. The line in this painting seems to be one of a curved horizontal line. The shape is bio-morphic with the people surrounding the pictures, the form doesnt seem to have much dimension but does have a more realistic look to it; and the space to the right side of the picture seems to be more evident than that of the left. The textures of the walls are rougher than that on the clothes which seem to be smoother. The color is more of a darker theme, while the value seems of more a change from darker to light. In this painting there is a lady whom is holding a baby and is sitting while to the left there are three children standing beside her holding an object that looks to be a vase. In the background of the painting to the right there is a man holding up something to his left but is looking to the right. Some of the more significant art principles or the texture, which shows itself through the walls to be rough, then shows itself smoother on the clothing with the softly curved brush strokes which bring out a rhythm. Also the color which is more of a darker theme that moves to a somewhat lighter and more shaded theme to chow the contrast. The space is also a big part of the picture showing the crowded left side while the empty right side brings more emphasis to the objects in the background. There is repetition of the patterns on the clothing to make the painting more realistic with wrinkles and shades. This helps bring the picture into harmony by pulling all the elements together in this new Mannerism style. I think Parmigianino was really trying to bring out the effects of proportions and position of poses to try to take the attention off of perception. I think he created this work to represent the new era of Mannerism. I think this painting means something of more a religious background having to deal with the new life and everyone surrounding it in amazement watching the child as it lays in its mothers arms. When looking at the piece of art work I get a feeling of new life and of curiosity. I feel the mother and the baby may be a symbol of Virgin Mary and Jesus when he was born being that there is no father in the picture and that everyone is surrounded in excitement.

I personally do enjoy this piece of art work; I do think it is a great example of Mannerism during the time and that it sends a good message to its viewers. I feel that is an important piece of art because it does such a great job of showing the different elements that were emphasized during this time. I would actually display this in my house due to the fact that it does have a homely kind of simplistic feel to it, but could also be properly displayed in a museum too due to its hidden symbols and historical relevance.
