FROM THE PRESIDENT…
Hello Everyone,
I would like to start by wishing everyone success this
year. For those of you who do not know me, my name is
Tom O’Connor. I am General Manager at Carpet for Less,
and I am proud to have been with that company for 26 years.
I am honored to serve the Chamber as President for 2009 and
hope to continue the tradition of excellence set by my
predecessors. I feel we have an excellent Board of
Directors with varied backgrounds and experiences and
together we can take the Belton Chamber and business
community to the next level.
We are fortunate to have such an outstanding Chamber in
our community but it is important that we continue to move
forward and grow- to serve our community, to build our own
businesses and to attract new business to the Belton area.
What does the Chamber do? To continue to improve the
Chamber, we need to understand what the Chamber does;
it’s one of the most often asked questions. According to our
By-Laws, Article I, Section 3 states, “The mission of the
Belton Chamber of Commerce is to create opportunities for
business success through networking, advocacy, and
business and professional development.” In this issue of our
newsletter, I’d like to address Networking opportunities.
First Friday Coffee and Business After Hours
Each month, the Belton Chamber of Commerce
organizes at least three networking opportunities open to all
member businesses, their employees and guests. The first
Friday of every month is the First Friday Coffee, typically
from 7:30-9:00 a.m. The third or fourth Thursday of every
month (usually the third Thursday) is an After Hours event
from 5:30-7:30 p.m. These two informal events are hosted
by one of our members, usually at their business but
sometimes at a local restaurant. The Chamber office sends
out reminder emails each week to give the specific location
and dates of all upcoming events. There is no cost to attend
either of these, and the host always provides a nice spread of
food and beverage- whether home–baked pastries and
flavored coffee or a catered appetizer offering. No
reservations are needed for the Coffee or After Hours. At
these events, the host has the opportunity to showcase their
business, and those attending have a chance to network and
introduce themselves to other members who may not be
aware of the services that they provide. These events are
always well attended, but we would love to see even more of
our regular and non-regular members attend- and bring

potential members as guests. I believe there is no better
opportunity to promote my business than when I get a chance
to explain to someone IN PERSON what my business
provides.
Membership Luncheons
Another regular networking opportunity that the Belton
Chamber of Commerce provides is the General Membership
Luncheon. These are held on the second Tuesday of each
month, with networking and sign-in beginning at 11:30 a.m.,
and lunch being served at noon. The meeting and/or guest
presentation starts about 12:25 p.m. and is over by 1:00 p.m.
Reservation through the Chamber Office are requested by the
Friday before the meeting. We are currently using the dining
hall at Carnegie Village to host our luncheons, and the cost is
$12 per person, paid by check or cash at the door. This is
another wonderful opportunity to network and promote your
business.
Special Events
Some other events are the Belton Chamber of Commerce
Golf Tournament in spring, August Steak Fry and Christmas
Party & Silent Auction. We also participate in other
community events such as Belton Community Days and the
Pumpkin Fest in October. While some events have become
know as fund-raisers for the Chamber, all provide wonderful
opportunities to network and get to know other members. We
are lucky to have a chamber that provides so many ways for us
to promote and grow our businesses; all we have to do is show
up and take advantage of those opportunities.
Hundreds of new customers!
Being positive about the potential we have before us is
optimistic, but the reality is that all of our businesses have
faced some tough economic times and are likely to face more
in the coming year. What better time for us to all group
together and support each other? The Belton Chamber of
Commerce has more than 300 members. The way I see it,
that’s 300 people I have the opportunity to call CUSTOMERS,
and that number doesn’t include the people that they may
know!
If you have not attended one of our networking events, I
encourage you to do so. If you are already attending regularly,
I encourage you to invite someone you know who is not. Your
participation will make us a stronger chamber, and I am certain
it will also benefit your business.
