Learning Proportions through Jack and the Beanstalk

Author: Kimberly Evans Revision Date of Lesson Plan (if applicable): 4-23-13 Overall Goal for the Lesson: Students will have a better understanding of proportions.

Description of classroom, grade level, and students: This is for a 7th grade math classroom of about 30 students. Student Objectives for the lesson. (Given a condition, the students will, to what level). Students will successfully create a data table using the measurements that they took from 10 objects around the classroom using their iPad. Using the data table that they created, students will use the data appropriately to solve proportion equations with 80% accuracy. Length of Lesson: (minutes, number of class periods, or days or weeks needed). One 50 minute class period Schedule of Activities: (Break down your activity into a timeline of events. Focus on what students will be doing and what teachers will be doing during each part of the activity.) The teacher will give a lesson over proportions on the Smart Board. Students will be taking notes and answering questions. Students will break into groups of two and take turns measuring each other. They will then pick 10 objects from around the room and measure them. Students will then create a data table on their iPad that lists all of this information. The teacher will walk around and help out where needed. Students will then calculate individually how big each object would be for a giant using proportions and list it on the data table. The teacher will give assistance where needed. Anything not completed will be done for homework and turned in the next day.

PASS or CC Standards Addressed (Copy and Paste from: http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/PASS/default.html) Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
1. Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.

PASS Instructional Technology Standards (Copy and Paste from: http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/PASS/default.html)

6. Technology Operations and Concepts

Students demonstrate a sound understandingof technology concepts, systems, and operations. 2. Understand and use technology systems

Assessments: How will these activities be assessed? (Go back to your objectives, what will the students do? Make sure that each objective is paired to an assessment measure that allows students to show it). The data tables will be graded for completion and based upon whether or not their measurements are appropriate. (If they state that an average sized fork is a foot long then that would not be appropriate.) The paper with the students calculations will be turned in and graded.

Accommodations: How might the lesson need to be adapted for students with special needs? Students with visual/audio impairments can sit in the front during the lecture in order to see/hear better. A table could be set up in the back with objects for the students to measure.

App to be used for lesson (if applicable): Students will be allowed to use any spreadsheet or table-making app that they choose as long as it can be exported. One example would be the SpreadSheet Free app.

Materials Needed: Go through each activity and identify what items (both technology and not) are needed to complete this lesson. Include a breakdown according to individual student or student groups. Include materials that need to be created as well. Lecture Portion o Smart Board o Projector Activity Portion o Paper
