Title of Lesson: Civil War Leaders Grade Level: 5th grade Stage 1- Desired Results Content Standard(s): SS5H1

The student will explain the causes, major events, and consequences of the Civil War. a) Identify Uncle Toms Cabin and John Browns raid on Harpers Ferry and explain how each of these events was related to the Civil War. b) Discuss how the issues of states rights and slavery increased tensions between the North and South. c) Identify major battles and campaigns: Fort Sumter, Gettysburg, the Atlanta Campaign, Shermans March to the Sea, and Appomattox Court House. d) d. Describe the roles of Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, and Thomas Stonewall Jackson. e. Describe the effects of war on the North and South. e) Describe the effects of war on the North and South. Understanding (s)/Goals Students will understand: Abraham Lincoln was the President during the Civil War and his role as President played a huge role in the success of the Union. Lincoln was known for the Gettysburg Address. Robert E. Lee was the General in Chief for the Confederate Army. General Lee was known for winning numerous battles against far greater Union army Ulysses S. Grant was the General-in-Chief of the Union Army. General Lee surrendered to General Grant on in April of 1865 at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Jefferson Davis became the President of the Confederacy when the South seceded from the Union. Thomas Stonewall Jackson was another famous General for the Confederate Army. General Jackson received his famous nickname "Stonewall" at the First Battle of Bull Run. Stage 2- Assessment Evidence


Assessment Plan Assessment Format/Evidence Lesson 1: Students will be assessed by the completed video podcast viewers guide checklist and

K-W-L graphic organizer. Lesson 2: Students will be assessed on the completion of the Civil War Trading Cards activity. Students or peer pairs will use laptops to research three of five key leaders discussed in the video podcast and record 4 facts about each leader on the back of a 3x5 index card. Students will draw or print a picture of the key leader to place on the other side of the index card. A checklist will be used to assess participation and completion of the Trading Card activity. Lesson 3: Students will be assessed on the completion of their newspaper/magazine article that will tell the story of one of the five Civil War key leaders. The teacher will use a rubric to assess the articles/biographies written by each student. The students will also take a quiz assessing their knowledge of the five key leaders of the Civil War. Performance Task (s) Performance Task Assessment Students will create a newspaper/magazine article that will focus on a key leader of the Civil War. They will pretend to be a historian writing a biography that will explain and describe the role of that leader. The biography/article must mention key events, battles, or other types of contributions that each leader made in the Civil War and also include an illustration to go along with the article/biography. *Students will complete this assessment with teacher guidance to assist with accommodating disabilities. Goal: Identify and discuss the role and contributions of key leaders of the Civil War Role: Students will pretend to be historians focusing on key leaders of the Civil War era. Their job will be to research the lives and roles of these leaders to write a biography of the key leader chosen. Audience: The target audience will be the readers of newspapers and/or magazines. Situation: You have been asked to write a biography on a key leader of the American Civil War for your local newspaper/magazine. You must research and find important information about each leader and focus mostly on how they contributed to the American Civil War. Product Performance and Purpose: The biography will be debuted in the newspaper along with other biographies of leaders during the American Civil War. Standards and Criteria for Success: The student correctly describes the roles of the chosen leader from the Civil War. The student tells the story of how the key leader chosen was important in the Civil War. Stage 3: Learning Plan


Learning Activities: Day 1: 1. Reference the Unit Standard SS5H1d: Read aloud and review element d of Standard SS5H1 and the lessons essential questions (Essential questions will be posted on the Promethean Board along with the dry erase marker board.) 2. Teacher will guide identification of unfamiliar words via oral questioning. 3. Students will utilize the K-W-L graphic organizer to predict what he/she knows about the Essential Questions/key leaders of the Civil War in collaborative pairs. 4. Collaborative pairs take turns sharing responses from the K-W-L graphic organizer. 5. After class discussion of K-W-L responses the teacher will have students watch the video podcast that highlights all of the key leaders mentioned in the standard. Students will fill out the active listening comprehension check list. 6. After the completion of the video podcast the teacher will go over the checklist with students to correct or discuss their true or false answers. If needed the teacher will go back to the part of the podcast that would clear up any misunderstanding of any of the key leaders. 7. Ticket- Out the- Door (TOD) Summarizer Students take turns as called on by teacher to give the name of the leader the teacher is describing with information given by the podcast. Day 2 1. Teacher references the existing EQs and reviews the key leaders of the Civil War by showing a picture of each to hook the students. The teacher will go over the expectations of the trading card activity that will be completed during class. 2. Student collaborative peers will be assigned laptops that were checked out from the school media center. Students will research three of the five Civil War leaders that are being studied and record their facts on notebook paper. 3. After students have conducted their research they will complete the Civil War Trading Card activity by completing three index cards with four facts and an illustration. Teacher will be observing students while they are on computers and completing the cards. 4. At the end of class students will complete a TOD where they will have to give one true statement about one of the key leaders they researched. Day 3 1. Teacher will reference the EQ and then give the directions for the Performance Task. Students will choose one key leader that he/she researched from the day before (trading card activity) and write an article/ biography about the Civil War leader. 2. Teacher will go over the rubric with the students and students will get started on writing their article. 3. Once students get finished with their article the teacher will allow a few of the students share their article with the class. The students will then have a chance to work with a group to review the key leaders before their quiz. The students will use their trading cards to review with one another. 4. Students will then complete the quiz for the conclusion of the 3 day lesson over the key leaders of the Civil War.
