The student will explain the causes, major events, and consequences of the Civil War. a) Identify Uncle Toms Cabin and John Browns raid on Harpers Ferry and explain how each of these events was related to the Civil War. b) Discuss how the issues of states rights and slavery increased tensions between the North and South. c) Identify major battles and campaigns: Fort Sumter, Gettysburg, the Atlanta Campaign, Shermans March to the Sea, and Appomattox Court House. d) d. Describe the roles of Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, and Thomas Stonewall Jackson. e. Describe the effects of war on the North and South. e) Describe the effects of war on the North and South. Understanding (s)/Goals Students will understand: Abraham Lincoln was the President during the Civil War and his role as President played a huge role in the success of the Union. Lincoln was known for the Gettysburg Address. Robert E. Lee was the General in Chief for the Confederate Army. General Lee was known for winning numerous battles against far greater Union army Ulysses S. Grant was the General-in-Chief of the Union Army. General Lee surrendered to General Grant on in April of 1865 at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Jefferson Davis became the President of the Confederacy when the South seceded from the Union. Thomas Stonewall Jackson was another famous General for the Confederate Army. General Jackson received his famous nickname "Stonewall" at the First Battle of Bull Run. Student Objectives (outcomes) Students will be able to: Identify the major leaders of the American Civil War Discuss the major leaders of the American Civil War Discuss the roles of key leaders in the Civil War. K-W-L graphic organizer. Lesson 2: Students will be assessed on the completion of the Civil War Trading Cards activity. Students or peer pairs will use laptops to research three of five key leaders discussed in the video podcast and record 4 facts about each leader on the back of a 3x5 index card. Students will draw or print a picture of the key leader to place on the other side of the index card. A checklist will be used to assess participation and completion of the Trading Card activity. Lesson 3: Students will be assessed on the completion of their newspaper/magazine article that will tell the story of one of the five Civil War key leaders. The teacher will use a rubric to assess the articles/biographies written by each student. The students will also take a quiz assessing their knowledge of the five key leaders of the Civil War. Performance Task (s) Performance Task Assessment Students will create a newspaper/magazine article that will focus on a key leader of the Civil War. They will pretend to be a historian writing a biography that will explain and describe the role of that leader. The biography/article must mention key events, battles, or other types of contributions that each leader made in the Civil War and also include an illustration to go along with the article/biography. *Students will complete this assessment with teacher guidance to assist with accommodating disabilities. Goal: Identify and discuss the role and contributions of key leaders of the Civil War Role: Students will pretend to be historians focusing on key leaders of the Civil War era. Their job will be to research the lives and roles of these leaders to write a biography of the key leader chosen. Audience: The target audience will be the readers of newspapers and/or magazines. Situation: You have been asked to write a biography on a key leader of the American Civil War for your local newspaper/magazine. You must research and find important information about each leader and focus mostly on how they contributed to the American Civil War. Product Performance and Purpose: The biography will be debuted in the newspaper along with other biographies of leaders during the American Civil War. Standards and Criteria for Success: The student correctly describes the roles of the chosen leader from the Civil War. The student tells the story of how the key leader chosen was important in the Civil War.
