I. School Profile

Nashville Elementary is the largest elementary school in Nash County with approximately 800 students. Student enrollment has remained steady over the last ten years with enrollment numbers ranging between 750 and 800 students each year. The school population consists of approximately 54% white, 43% African American, 2% Hispanic, and 1% biracial and Native American students. Student proficiency is a source of pride for the school, especially since their achievement scores placed them in the top ten percent of the state based on the 2011-2012 EOG scores. Over the last five years, the school has made tremendous gains academically. Math achievement scores at every grade level are above 90% with some teachers even managing to achieve 100% proficiency in their classrooms. When looking at subgroup achievement data, there is virtually no performance gap between any of the sub-groups (less than a 10% gap between any sub-group). The school's reading achievement scores while still high are not quite as high with overall performance at each grade level between 80-85% proficient, which is still good. When looking at sub-group performance trends there are some areas for improvement. Nashville has the largest SWD (Students with Disabilities) population percentage wise of any other elementary school in the district as well as the largest number of students identified with Autism. This school is to be commended for their hard work as their SWD sub-group performance is well above the district and the state average in Reading at 55%. Overall, reading proficiency for the school is 81.2%. With a discrepancy of 26.2, the SWD subgroup performance in reading is an area that many have identified as an area that they would like to see the school continue to grow and improve. When comparing the past two Teacher Working Conditions results, it is important to keep in mind that the results are comparing two different administrators. Otherwise, the staff has stayed basically the same as there is little to no teacher turnover at this school. Based on a comparison of the last two TWC surveys, the three main areas that stood out were relationships, new teacher support, and professional development. Relationships are the primary area of concern for staff members based on the TWC as well as staff report in various surveys. They report feeling a lack of support from administration in terms of student discipline and a lack of trust amongst each

other in terms of wanting to work together and feeling that you can rely on your co-workers. Some teachers in staff surveys have stated that teachers do not treat each other respectfully or professionally indicating that this is an area for improvement. Another area of concern is Professional Development. Teachers want more time to plan instruction, and they want professional development that is more tailored to their specific needs with adequate support and sustained follow-up, particularly in the areas of technology and understanding the expectations of the new standards.
