Simple USB CAT & CW Interface SUCCI

Thank you for purchasing the Simple USB CAT & CW interface, in short SUCCI. 1. Brief description This interface converts from USB the following computer-generated signals, used by most of the logger programs out there: Radio control over serial port (a.k.a. Computer Aided Transceiver) for all transceivers that utilize interfaces with TTL voltage levels (0V and +5V), i.e. Yaesu FT817/857/897, FT-100, FT-840, FT-890, FT-900, FT-990, FT-1000(D) and all Icom radios with CI-V interface or Kenwood TS-50, TS-450, TS-690, TS-850, TS-950. CW signal generated on the DTR line of the serial port standard for all logger programs. signal generated on the RTS line of the serial port standard for all logger programs. FootSwitch (FS) input on DSR serial line (pin 6) standard for all logger programs.

Both CW and PTT signals are optoisolated with optocouplers that can withstand up to 70VDC and up to 30mA, but not more than 100mW on their open-collector outputs. The and FS terminals have RFI blocking filters. 2. Connecting to your computer The connection to your PC is accomplished with the supplied USB cable or similar. The interface utilizes FT232RL integrated circuit by FTDI Chip and any Windows OS should install the correct drivers at the time you plug the USB cable of the device in. After correct driver installation you should see COM port with identifier USB Serial Port in the Ports (COM & LPT) section of Windows Device Manager. This COM port must be configured under your logging program with its particular number for the Radio Control, CW, PTT and FootSwitch functions. In case you fail to install the drivers or they are not automatically found, you can download them from the following location: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm You may also check the documentation on FTDI Chips internet site at www.ftdichip.com for more information. 3. Connecting to your transceiver SUCCIs terminals for CW, PTT and FS signals are connected to a colored RCA cinch connector. Center pins on CW and PTT outputs must be connected to the active pins on the respective inputs of your transceiver while the rings must connect to radios ground (usually available on the connectors as well). Please consult your transceivers user guide for more information. Center and ring of the FS RCA connector must connect to both wires that come out of your footswitch. This circuit must be passive, no voltage and/or current are expected to flow into it. Due to the differences in radio control interfaces supported by different equipment vendors SUCCI supports two main modes on its CAT terminal, which is realized with 3.5mm stereo jack. Modes are explained below:

Icom mode JP2 connects pins 1 and 2. In this mode your Icom radio can be connected to SUCCI with regular mono or stereo audio cable with 3.5mm plugs on cables ends. The CI-V interface has only one active pin the tip of the jack. Ground connects to the jacks ground terminal the sleeve. Non-Icom mode JP2 connects pins 2 and 3. This mode is used for all transceivers that utilize separate Rx and Tx signal lines on their CAT interface and requires that 3.5mm stereo jack is used for connection towards the radio. In this mode SUCCIs (Computers) TxD is on the tip, RxD is on the ring and GND goes to the sleeve of the jack. CAT connector on the radio side depends on the radio made and model so you should consult your transceiver manual for further information on that. Kenwood-enabled SUCCI boards follow the non-Icom mode settings. It must be considered that once a board is programmed to support Kenwood radios, it cannot support other transceivers (Icom, Yaesu) and of course, standard SUCCI boards do not support Kenwood radios. SUCCI boards can switch between Kenwood/Standard modes through reprogramming.

Take a look at the picture below to get an idea of transceiver control connection in both modes.

I believe that even short, this manual is sufficient for turning SUCCI into action! Good luck! Please check the project page at http://www.kotarov.com/projects/succi for up-to-date information! Should you have any comments and/or questions, please drop me an e-mail: vesselin@kotarov.com
