OUR VISION - 2012

Dr. Sami Kassem General Manager & Board Member The year 2011 has been both a challenging and exciting year for PROTEC. To make us even more responsive, relevant, and cutting-edge, we conducted an extensive review of our existing programs and strategies. In that light, we reorganized our management and the overall organizational structure to suit our new plans. We believe this will make us relevant in todays world and to the commitment we made to make PROTECs business a strategic solution provider to the emerging needs of this region. For all that have been accomplished in this difficult year, we thank you our member companies and partners for your ready response. Mr. Yarrob Rayyan Managing Director & Board Member We faced the challenge of redesigning our approaches to better response to the needs of the times. We also stretched our efforts, extending to establish platforms of collective giving and strategic investment, and brought to life our goal of establishing collective impact.

IN THIS ISSUE :

In 2011, we pursued with our vision to lead the business sectors efforts where concrete core business solutions are actually utilized to address societal as well as environmental problems. In the last fiscal year, we have achieved substantial results. To truly effect collective impact, we saw the need to ensure that every project must have a common goal, a cohesive strategy, and a uniform parameter that synchronizes all the efforts of the business sector and other development stakeholders. Certainly, the sum is greater than the parts. Together, let's build the big solutions to the big challenges.

E-Cell* Electro De-ionization System from GE Water & Process Technologies
Electro deionization (EDI) is used in the production of deionized and ultrapure water required in industrial applications like boiler feed, pharmaceuticals, semiconductor manufacturing etc. EDI is being widely preferred over the conventional ion exchange systems as they provide continuous operation, higher levels of demineralization, constant stable product quality and do not require any regeneration chemicals. Depending on the feed water characteristics, the EDI is used as shown in igure, following an initial pretreatment step to remove suspended solids and organics and an initial demineralization with reverse osmosis to remove ionic impurities, particles and high molecular weight organics. The EDI will be the inal demineralization step to remove residual ionic and ionizable impurities (like sulfates, nitrates, carbonates or Ca and Magnesium ions). The feed water characteristics to the EDI must be absolute. Physical contamination (metal shavings, dust, pollen, debris) and chemical contamination (oxidizers like chlorine, iron, manganese etc) must be prevented. Feed water hardness and CO2 content is also to be monitored. A proper projection on the feed water to EDI system is thus required.

Typical EDI systems can produce product water of >16 MOhmcm resistivity and offer recovery of about 95% depending on feed water quality. EDI systems generally achieve major cost reductions by eliminating regeneration chemicals, neutralization systems and hazardous waste streams. They also help achieve signi icant space savings. There are currently more than 100,000 gpm installed capacity of EDI systems by GEWPT.
