a. First, produce a frequency distribution for CHLDIDEL and hand it in with your
work. Notice that more than half of all respondents answered two or fewer
children was best. Before running Cross tabs, recode this variable to have just
two response categories: two or fewer, and three or more children. So, create a
new variable, CHILD2, with the following values and labels:

CHLDIDEL IDEAL NUMBER OF CHILDREN

Description of the Variable

211. What do you think is the ideal number of children for a
family to have?

Percent N Value Label

1.3 391 0
2.4 751 1
51.9 16,167 2
23.1 7,193 3
11.7 3,629 4
1.6 510 5

RECODED VARIABLE
SYNTAX- CHILD2(r: 1 = 0-2; 2 = 3-*)

b. Run the Cross tabs procedure for the independent variable SEX and the
dependent variable CHILD2. Is there an association between these two
variables? If so, how strong is the association?

The data showed that males and females prefer to have 0-2 children as opposed to three
and up. The data displayed that 100% of the men and women respondents surveyed
believes that 0-2 children are best. There is a strong association because according to the
data all of chose 0-2 children. This association is very strong in the fact that the data shows
100% agreeance based upon gender. This can be the case because having one child may
leave the first child lonely, for those who want a certain gender of a child trying a second
time gives you a 50/50 that you may get the gender that you like, and 0-2 children are alot
easier, physically and economically to tend to.

c. Does the relationship between SEX and CHILD2 depend on values of other
variables like education? Add DEGREE and run the Cross tabs procedure again.
Explain how the relationship between SEX and CHILD2 varies across levels of
education.

SEX and CHILD2 could possible depend on other variables such as education , because your
level of education, or how high you plan to go in your level of education could ultimately
affect you decision or how many kids you want, or whether or not you would like to have
kids at all.
DEGREE was used as the control variable and the values of Degree were 0(LT HIGH
SCHOOL), 1(HIGH SCHOOL), 2(JUNIOR COLLEGE), 3(BACHELOR),4(GRADUATE). Out of all
of the categories, once again 100% of male and female respondents chose 0-2 children.
This showed to be consist ant in each level of education.
