Esteemed Faculty,

Greetings from IIPM-Jaipur!

I write this mail on behalf of Prof.Sai G. Bose and the Dept. of Academics. This mail is regarding the Common Examination process from this January Batch (WINTER 2012-14) onwards. Please find the Updated guidelines for the Question Paper for the end term examinations. Please make sure that the Two sets of Question Papers reach us latest by the 11th March,2012 for the afore said batch.

Superceding all the earlier mails that you have received regarding the common examination process Pan India from 2012-14 PGP batch (I Semester) onwards, all the faculties are advised to take a careful cognizance of this latest and final set of guidelines for setting the end term examinations question papers. The deadline for submitting the question papers at saigbose@iipm.edu is 11 March 2012 (12:00 Midnight). You are welcome to send them earlier but NOT later than this date. We cannot afford to have any deliquencies since now the final paper setting process is being centrally coordinated by the Deptt. Of Academics/Examinations at Delhi. For a 1 credit paper (in Sem. I, only IT for Managers carries 1 credit), the paper setter has to set 1 case study based question plus 4 more questions. Thus, including the case based compulsory question (Question No. 1) the student will answer 3 questions in all. Normally 1 credit paper will carry 50 marks (20+15+15). For a 2-or-more-credits paper, the paper will contain: 1 Case based question (Question No. 1), subdivided into as many as the paper setter wishes, which will have to be compulsorily answered. In numericals oriented subject case study will also be numerical calculations based.( QT, Business Statistics, Research Methods, etc.) 1 Definitions/subject focussed terms based question (Question No. 2) which will ask the students to define/explain 15 (no less, no more) terms in 4-5 lines each. This question will also have to be compulsorily answered. Thus the students will have to answer 2 compulsory questions. (Q.3-Q.8): Then the examiner will set 6 more questions out of which a student will select three questions for answering.

In all a student will be required to answer 5 questions, including 2 compulsory questions. If the syllabus for a particular subject is divided into 2 sections (e.g. Accounting for Managers), then the questions will be divided into 2 groups of 3 questions each. Thus there will be 3 questions from Sec. A and another 3 from Sec. B of the syllabus. However, in this case the student will have to select 2 questions each from both the sections. Thus the student will answer (2+2+2) six questions in all, including 2 compulsory questions, 2 from first section, and another 2 from second section. In other words case based and definitions based question will remain compulsory here too among the total of 8(2+3+3) questions which will appear in the final paper. And the student will answer six questions in all. Each faculty is required to send 2 sets of question paper for a particular subject. And each paper should contain a different case study. Besides the faculty must desist from including merely a statement/ a paragraph/ a small caselet, trying to pass it off as a full fledged case. Finally the faculty must refrain from sloppily scanning a case from a book/other source. Before forwarding the question papers, the concerned faculty must make sure that the pattern suggested is actually followed by in the paper setting. The paper must be set in a balanced form, not leaving out any major part of the syllabus. We will not have multiple choice questions requiring a mere Yes/No response from the student or a simple tick. Students have a tendency to either wildguess the answer or cheat by consulting their neighbours. (Please do not waste your time/ effort by setting such questions) The faculty must set applications oriented questions and avoid straight concept based questions. For example: Instead of Explain the STP approach to marketing, the question should be if you were to enter the market for cell phones in urban India how will you apply STP approach to enter the market? (OR) Do you think 360 feedback is being practised in Indian organizations? Justify your an swer with actual cases. Naturally it is presumed that classroom teaching is already oriented towards this end. If the students will be required to use any formulas the faculty must compulsorily attach them to the question paper (In word file format) or put them within the relevant question. Likewise if certain mathematical /statistical tables need to be consulted by the student, the faculty must make a mention of this fact while mailing the question paper so that these can be made accessible to the students on the day of the examination.

For numerical questions the faculty should forward their solutions in detail as well.

The faculty is advised to follow only layout/formatting style given below while keying in the question paper:

- Font: Use Times New Roman font. Use the same font throughout. Use font size 12. Use font color Black, Text 1 - Margins (Open page layout for Margin setting): *Pages must have at least: 1 inch margin on left, right, top, and bottom side of the paper. - Justify: After preparing the whole question paper press ctrl+ j to justify the entire content of the question paper.

- Save: Please either use the sample paper format to prepare your question paper or save it in word 97-2003 document format only. I am attaching two sample question papers formats for your reference.

It is suggested that the students are also apprised of the format of the question paper in advance so that they dont get nasty surprises in the examination hall; rather they should feel well prepared to answer the paper.

Feel free to seek any clarifications.

Thanks & Regards ,
