Disadvantages of Incandescent Bulb usage 5. Effects of Radioactive Pollutants 6. Benefits in saving Electrical Energy 7. Energy Saving Tips 8. Conclusion INTRODUCTION: Power crisis: The power crisis that the entire world is facing today is due to the use of INCANDESCENT BULB. The amount of Energy that is wasted in lighting up the incandescent bulb is the sole cause of shortage of energy which fore tells a bleak future generation. Now, It is of great important to be aware of the power crisis in future generation, and how it could be avoided and what are the reasons for this? Generally consumption of Electric current is measure in Units. 1 Unit =1 KW hr. =1000 W hr. A 40W FLOUROSCENT Bulb consumes 1 unit of Electric current in 25 hours i.e.,1000/40= 25 A 60W INCANDESCENT Bulb consumes 1 unit of Electric current in 16.6 hours i.e.,1000/60= 16.6 A 25 W CFL Bulb consumes 1 unit of Electric current in 40 hours i.e.,1000/25= 40 For every unit of Electricity consumption it cost Rs.2.40-3.40.

The various ELECTRIC GOODS and their Electricity consumption in hours are listed below. S.NO TYPE OF BULB WATTAGE(W) CONSUMED In HOURS/UNIT 1 Incandescent bulb 25 40 hrs 40 25 hrs 60 16 hrs 40 min 2 CFL 5 200 hrs 9 111 hrs 11 91 hrs 13 76 hrs 50 min 17 58 hrs 3 FLOUROSCENT WITH COPPER CHOKE 40 55 35 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 NIGHT LAMP 15 CEILING FAN(36/48 inches) 50 56 inches 60 GEYSER(15-50 Liters capacity) REFRIGERATOR(SMALL) BIG TV AIR CONDITIONER(1 Ton) 1.5 Ton AIR COOLER WASHING MACHINE(Automatic) 2000 225 300+ 60-120 1400 1800 170 325/1000 25 hrs 18 hrs 20 min 28 hrs 30 min 66hrs 40 min 20 hrs 16 hrs 40 min 30 min 2 Units/day 4 Units/day 16 hr 4 min 40 min 33 min 6 HRS 3-5 hrs

The watts needed by regular INCANDESCENT Bulbs and CFLS to produce the same amount of light roughly as follows S.NO INCANDESCENT CFL (Watts) BULBS(Watts) 1 60 13-15 2 75 20 3 4 5 100 150 250-300 26-30 28-42 55

Further use of the Incandescent bulb pose a threat to our Ecological setting by contributing to the greenhouse gas production leading to life threading situation. The use of florescent bulb ensures the use of energy which is almost 66% less than a normal Incandescent bulb.

So, by replacing one 60 Watt Incandescent BULB by 13 Watt CFL YOUSAVE ABOUT Rs.1500/-over its life time. DISADVANTAGES OF INCANDESCENT BULB: To give the light from an Incandescent Bulb it should burn at thousands of degree centigrade. It releases more heat as CO2 which effects global warming.

A Power plant may emit up to 10mg of MERCURY (Hg) to produce the Electricity to run an Incandescent bulb.Comparitively a CFL requires only 2-4 mg of Hg for the same time. Coal based Thermal power plants are an important man made source of Mercury. The thermal power plant may account for up to 40% of Hg emission in the air. In addition to CO2 thermal power plants also release SO2 (Main cause of Acid rain) Nitrogen oxide (cause smog & Acid rain) Radioactive pollutants and Hg. It is estimated that replacing a single incandescent bulb with CFL will keep Half-Ton CO2 out of the atmosphere over life time.

Effects of Mercury Emission from Thermal power plants: Mercury emission from Thermal plants is Air borne and poses a lower risk of exposure. When the same Mercury is deposited in the Organic dumps/water bodies through the dispose of broken or discarded CFLs.It may transform into METHYL MERCURY which is a NEUROTOXIN i.e. likely to enter the food chain. Air Emission of Mercury from a Thermal power plant also eventually lands on the vegetation soil etc. There by entering the food chain. Effects of Radioactive pollutants: The Radioactive pollutants such as 232Th, 238U and 239U causes CANCER. Pond ash generated from coal containing is as high as 50 ppm of 232Th and 10 ppm of 238U. Benefits in Saving Electrical energy: If we save one unit per day i.e., 30 units / month we can save Rs.150.00. If the consumption exceeds 200units/month. Every unit costs Rs.4.75 per unit.

If it exceeds 300 units /month it costs as Rs.5.50/unit. One unit saving at your end means 2 units saving at the generating stations. Generating 2 units at power station means 2 Kg of coal and 4kgs of emissions .By this we can observe the Non-Renewable resources. Avoiding the emissions are necessary, as Emissions are directly related to Global Warming, Temperature changes, Cyclones and Hurricanes AND Disruption of regular rainfall patterns.

We can prevent the threat to our Ecological balance. Energy Saving Tips: 1) Lightening: Use Natural light and Task light to the maximum Replace Incandescent with CFLs Replace Cu/Al chokes with Electronic Chokes. Replace T12 Tube light with T5 tube light. Use light as per need and at appropriate places Switch off TV, CD & DVD player, Music systems but not with remote and save 7% of Energy. 2) Refrigerator and Air conditioners: Replace Resistances (Large size) regulators with Electronic small size regulators.

Keep the Refrigerator 4 5 inches away from the Wall. Avoid opening the refrigerator door frequently. Set the thermostat of refrigerator/Air conditioner correctly as per the season. Defrost refrigerators regularly and avoid Ice buildup. Regularly clean Air filter of Air conditioner. When we use the Air conditioner, close all the doors, as it covers more area and consumes more energy. Conclusion:

If we follow these rules stated above, we can save the current as much as we can use this for the next five years, and live happily. Live & let others live By saving power Save power, save environment & Save Nation
