Seneca High School held its
first-ever Color Me Goodness
Run, covering runners in a cloud
of colors.
We sort of took it off of the
color runs that are being held na-
tionally. It was a spin on the Pre-
cious Gems Run weve held, said
Erin Lawler, substance aware-
ness coordinator at Seneca. Its
about making good decisions that
can have an impact on others.
The Precious Gems Memorial
remembers four teens killed by a
repeat drunken driving offender.
The four girls, Megan Blong,
Amanda Geiger, Shana Lawler
and Angela McGrady, were from
the Medford area.
Erin is Shanas older sister.
The death of Shana, Angela,
Amanda and Megan could have
very easily been prevented. Driv-
ing under the influence is not an
accident. The actions of consum-
ing alcohol willingly proceeded
by turning the key to make the
motor of your car start and then
hitting the accelerator, all while
under the influence, is not acci-
dental. The woman who drove at
65 miles an hour into the girls
car, making no effort to break all
before noon on April 6 (1999), did
so willingly, Lawler said. I walk
the hallways of Seneca each day
hoping that just maybe I can pre-

Color Run is a take on
Precious Gems Run last year

from making a decision that
claimed someone's sister, daugh-
ter, best friend, because the four
crosses on the main bypass of
Kill Devil Hills do not stand
alone.
There are thousands of cross-
es that are erected every year be-
cause someone didn't think,
someone didn't step in and say
something, take the keys.
Someone's somebody is repre-
sented with each cross and that
isn't fair.
That's why we created the
Precious Gems Memorial, be-
cause we refuse to let their loss
be in vain.
In January 2000, the driver,
Melissa Marvin, was found guilty
of four counts of second degree
murder and one count of assault
with a deadly weapon. She was
sentenced to a minimum of 60
years in prison.
For the past 14 years, I, and
the other families, have pressed
forward and entered new chap-
ters in our lives, Lawler said.
But there is not a day that I do
not think of my sister.
Melissa Marvin removed four
lives from this earth. The girls,
their families had no say.
The Lenape Regional High
School District continues to
teach about the dangers of drink-
ing while driving and how the
choices people make affect one
another.
Though the run is usually
about Precious Gems, this year it
focused on making decisions.
The Precious Gems Memorial
inspired the event. I needed to
take a year off to put a different
spin on things and what tran-
spired, Lawler said, noting that
nothing has changed but the
name of the event.
Lawler presented three assem-
blies to the students with alumni
and seniors reflecting on the
good, bad and in between of mak-
ing choices from high school to
college.
They learned about choosing
friends wisely, things that matter
and dont matter, Lawler said.
Alumni talked about what they
knew and how important it is to
learn about decision making.
Three or four graduates pro-
vided the student body with a
good representation of kids who

State Department of Education
approves evaluation instrument

The state Department of Edu-
cation recently approved the
Lenape Regional High School
District's Teaching Practice Eval-
uation Instrument "as part of the
state's plan to implement annual
professional performance re-
views of classroom teachers," ac-
cording to a recent release.
Schools are required to begin
implementation of AchieveNJ by
the 2013-14 school year.
According to the DOE, current
evaluations are often subjective
and infrequent, and better teach-
ing and learning do not result.
The state has been working on
the new evaluation system since
2011, and it will be launched
statewide next fall.
According to the release,
LRHSD Superintendent of
Schools Carol L. Birnbohm and a
team of educators representing
all the district's schools complet-
ed the state DOE's rigorous Re-
quest for Qualification for the
evaluation instrument applica-
tion.
In addition to teacher evalua-
tions, tenure procedures have
been changed.
According to the DOE, educa-
tors are eligible to earn tenure
after four years, one year longer
than it took under the previous
law.
In addition, for teachers, prin-
cipals, assistant principals and
vice principals, TEACHNJ links
the earning and keeping of
tenure to the results of the em-
ployees annual combined evalua-
tion.
We were gratified to be noti-
fied that Lenape's evaluation tool
was placed on the state's list of
Approved Teaching Practice
Evaluation Instruments, which
reinforces our commitment to
our 'home grown' model," Birn-
bohm said in the release.
Additional schools in the area
have begun preparation for the
change, including Cherry Hill
and Moorestown.
The change will be positive fi-
nancially for the district. LRHSD
will stand to see $70,000 in cost
savings per year by implement-
ing its own evaluation instead of
contracting with a third party.
LRHSD has been implement-
ing the Research for Better
Teaching Inc. model for the past
16 years as the professional devel-
opment model.

he 102 days between Memorial
Day and Labor Day weekends
are crucial for the Jersey Shore,
which, no matter what town you live
in, has a vital impact on the Garden
States economy. And while beautiful
weather is causing excitement for
beach season to be high, beach towns
are also experiencing high anxiety as
the big first weekend looms less than
three weeks away.
Six months removed from the devas-
tation caused by Hurricane Sandy,
Shore towns are still fighting to fully
recover. Beach remediation is going on
in full force in Ocean City, as we speak.
While the Boardwalk is alive and well,
and parts of the beach are open to the
public, other parts are still under
heavy construction.
Further north, towns such as Sea-
side Heights, Sandy Hook, Point Pleas-
ant and Sea Bright are all scrambling
to get as much done as possible before
the season opens.
What effect this will have on the suc-
cess, or failure, of the local economy
wont be known until the end of sum-
mer, and might not be felt in full until
the winter holiday shopping season.
In Atlantic City, a purchase deal be-
tween PokerStars and the Atlantic
Club casino put a damper on hopes, at
least temporarily. PokerStars, a lead-
ing company in online poker and other
gambling, had been trying to buy the
casino since the fall, but final attempts
to do so fell through.
Now, many of the approximately
1,800 workers at the casino which re-
ported a $43 million net loss in 2012
could be out of a job.
Gov. Christie believes the states
newest offering of online gambling,
which was passed in February, could
become a $1.2 billion industry, but that
wont happen for a few years yet, for
sure.
So what can be done in the mean-
time?
If youre Atlantic City, keep trying to
find a buyer for the Atlantic Club, and
expand marketing efforts to bring
more gamblers to the coast.
If youre a Shore town, welcome vis-
itors with open arms, and use these
last two weeks of preparation to work
as hard as possible.
If youre a New Jersey resident, stay
local this summer and spend money at
our Shore towns.

Memorial Golf Outing on Monday, May 20
at the Medford Lakes Country Club in
Medford Lakes.
The outing will begin at 11 a.m. with a
lunch buffet, a noon shotgun start and din-
ner following the end of the golf outing.
This outing will be conducted on a best
ball scramble format with prizes given for
the longest drive, hole-in-one and closest to
pin.
Business and individual sponsors are
needed for the golf outing.
There will be four categories of spon-
sors.
To be a Par Sponsor the donation will
be $125, for a Birdie Sponsor it will be
$250, for an Eagle Sponsor $500 and for a
Lead Sponsor the donation will be $2,500.
The Lead Sponsor can have four
golfers play in the outing, recognition on
the Medford-Vincentown Rotary Clubs
banner that will hang over Main Street in
Medford for two weeks prior to the golf
outing, a prominent advertisement for
your company in the golf outings program
booklet, and the Lead Sponsor can also
have its own display and/or booth at the
event.
Individual golfers are also needed.
Golfers donations will be $150 and will
include 18 holes of golf, a cart and dinner
at the end of the tournament.
Dinner-only reservations will be $50.
Money from the outing will be used by
the Medford-Vincentown Rotary Club to
fund a number of community projects, in-
cluding scholarships for children to attend
the YMCAs day camp, families in need that
live in the Medford-Vincentown area and
other worthwhile events or needs.

sight in what to expect, accord-
ing to Lawler.
One of the students shared
about how his friend base
changed and it wasnt the center
of the world, Lawler said. Mak-
ing good decisions can be crip-
pling [for students] from now to
the first weeks of college.
Not being able to get accli-
mated and kids getting caught up
in the party scene and the stuff
that goes on with that.
Lawlers intent was to deliver
the same information the Pre-
cious Gems lesson provided in a
lighter manner.
I always tell the kids we have
a blank canvas in life and ask
them how theyre going to color
it and enhance it, Lawler said.
Students wore a blank can-
vas to the event, arriving in
white shirts and shorts.
Volunteers threw a mixture of
cornstarch and dried tempera
paint onto the runners.
Lawler and volunteers mixed
600 pounds of color for the event.
According to Lawler, a third of
the school attended the run, the
most ever for an event at Seneca.
We did a lot of research in
terms of whats entailed into a
color run, what goes into creat-
ing a course, Lawler said.
The process was time consum-
ing, but when the plans for the
run were revealed, students were
extremely excited to be a part of
it.
This is a trial run to see how
many participants we would get,
and I was pretty impressed,
Lawler said.
The run contributed to the cul-
ture of the school, often referred
to as a family by faculty and
staff.
It was one further thing that
provided another example of
why Seneca is Seneca, Lawler
said. Allowing kids to be part of
these projects that are grandiose
and doing things that arent typi-
cal within a high school.
It gives them a chance to
dream big and do substance-free
activities.

RBT has been used to aid and
develop educators, promote colle-
giality, develop leadership skills
for strong school and district cul-
ture and build in-house profes-
sional development in all LRHSD
schools to ensure skillful teach-
ing, according to the release.
According to the release, when
the DOE in 2012 announced its
plans to require school districts
to implement state-mandated
evaluation instruments, the dis-
trict organized the District Evalu-
ation Advisory Committee to ana-
lyze its RBT-based teacher evalua-
tion instrument to ensure align-
ment with the requirements.
Birnbohm credits the mem-
bers of the DEAC, who worked to-
gether for nearly a year, for spear-
heading the district's successful
RFQ application, the release said.
"This truly was a district-wide
effort that engaged administra-
tors and teaching staff represent-
ing the Education Association. It
was representative of the team-
work that defines the Lenape Dis-
trict and reinforces our focus on
professional excellence and the
success and well-being of every
student," Birnbohm said in the
release.
LRHSD Director of Curricu-
lum and Instruction Heather Xe-
nakis, who chaired the DEAC and
coordinated the RFQ application
process, is unequivocally dedicat-
ed to the district's continued suc-
cess using the RBT pedagogical
model, which reinforces a com-
mon language between teachers
and administrators, which is crit-
ical to improve instruction.
Having high expectations for
professional growth is the back-
bone for success in the class-
room, Birnbohm said in the re-
lease.
"We realize many benefits
using our own model," Xenakis
said. "Teachers have a comfort
level with RBT terminology and
ideology because it has been part
of our professional development
for 16 years. District teachers
serve as RBT in-district trainers
and lead all professional develop-
ment coursework.
And last, but not least, the dis-
trict realizes huge savings each
year.

Seneca High School held its first-ever Color Me Goodness Run on
April 27. We sort of took it off of the color runs that are being held
nationally. It was a spin on the Precious Gems Run weve held, said
Erin Lawler, substance awareness coordinator at Seneca. Its about
making good decisions that can have an impact on others. The run
drew a third of the schools population in addition to teachers and
alumni. Lawler was pleased with the outcome.
