Who is she?

Blah blah blah, thats all I was hearing in U.S. Government class with Mrs. Martinez. I did not want to sit there and listen to how the government works. Its screwed up anyway. Theres the end of that subject, everyone gets an A. I was so tired from the day beforeCoach had us working double time at football practice yesterday. The loss

on Tuesday hit us hard, especially Coach. The other teams coach was his arch enemy when they were in high school, so he took the loss personally, and made us paybig time. My muscles were so sore, I almost didnt come to school. ManMrs. Martinez was still taking. I wished she would shut up. I looked out the window and found that it was still raining. The sun had not shone for days in this month of Octoberthe rain has no respect for the seasons here in Tacoma, Washington. The sunshine we do get in the summer lasts only for a brief moment. I kept staring out the window, praying the time would go by faster. This blows, I thought to myself, when something hit me on my arm. It was a piece of crumpled-up paper. I opened it. It had hearts and smiley faces on it. It said Are you free Friday night? I looked up, and Kasey Hixes turned to smile at me. I smiled back at her, to be polite. Hmmwhat was I doing Friday night? I had no clue, but then it hit meSeans party. I wrote on the paper that I had plans. I wasnt sure if she was invitedshe was a junior, and the party was only for seniors and the football team. I threw the paper back to her. When she opened it she had a sad look on her face. And then she turned to me. I just shrugged my shoulders with a smile on my face. I hope she doesnt get mad, I thought. I mean, dont get me wrongshe was fine. Long curly hair, hazel eyes, and beautiful skin. But she was too forward, and I dont like that in girls. The other guys on the football team love the attention of girls throwing themselves at them. Me, I just stay on the sidelines. These girls did nothing for me.

Dang, Mrs. Martinez was still talking. Everyone was taking notes, but I decided to doodle instead. Then the door opened. In walked a girl that I had never seen before. She had very long black hair, down her back. Her eyes glowed like cat eyes do in the dark. It was kind of creepy, but sexy at the same time. She wore all black with silver jewelry. And her bootsI dont know how she wore them. They came all the way up to her knees, with at least a four-inch heel. I heard Crystal Montgomery giggle to her pet Melissa Kimp, calling the girl a freak. She was a hater because she couldnt pull that outfit off. Come to think of it, I didnt think anyone I knew could pull that outfit off. Attention, class, we have a new student, Francesca Rivera. Everyone welcome her. The new girl looked at everyone like she wanted to throw up. Why dont you take the empty seat next to Alejendro. She walked gracefully down the rows, not looking at anyone and saying nothing. She looked at me as she sat down and cleared her throat. Damn, she was fine. I could not keep my eyes off of her. Something about her made me wanted to grab her and kiss her nonstop, but I knew she would slap me and put a restraining order on me if I did that. So I decided against it. The bell finally rang. I wanted to talk to her after class, but she was out of the room before I knew it. So, what are you doing Friday night? Kasey was at my desk so fast I didnt realize she was standing there.
3

Uma party. I grabbed my book bag and headed toward the door. I want to catch up with the Francesca girl, but Kasey was blocking my path. Oh, whose party? Dang, shes nosy. Its Seans party. Oh, I wonder how come I didnt know about it. Maybe because its only for seniors. I didnt want to shoot her down like that, but she was too persistent. She was the type of girl that always gets what she wants. Kasey was cute, but Kasey was a dangerous cute. The kind of cute that would start trouble, and in the end someone would get hurt. Well, is there any way I could get invited to this party? She put her hand on my arm. I think she was trying to seduce mebut it didnt work. UmmI dont know. If someone thats already invited brings you, I guess. Well, invite me. She looked like she wanted to bite me, so I stepped back and gave it to her straight. Look, Kasey, I am going to the party alone. I just want to have fun and hang with the fellas. Maybe you should ask John, he may be more than happy to take bring you. But Im going solo. She stepped back, turned, and flipped her hair. You dont know what youre missing, she said as she walked toward the door. I just shook my head. She was crazy, and I had to let her down easy. I walked out of the class room into the hallway. It was lunchtime. I walked into the cafeteria, hoping I would see Francesca again. I had no clue what drew me to her. I grabbed my usualnachos with peppers, sour cream, and cheeseat the food counter.

Man, the party is going to be crazy on Friday, Sean said, and he threw some grapes in the air, catching them with his mouth. The only people that sat at our table were the varsity football team. We had the occasional cheerleaders trying to sit with us, but we liked it better when it was just the guys. We could talk about the game, practice, TV, and, yes, girls. Everyone was hyped about Seans party, which was the first one of the new football season. I was ready to just let loose and have fun. While everyone was still talking about who they were going to take to the party, I glanced around the lunch room to see if Francesca had this lunch period. And she did. She was sitting a few tables away, with two other girls Id never seen before. I wondered if they were new as well. Hey, John, I said, punching him on his shoulder. Dang, man, what? Are they new, too, the ones sitting with the Francesca girl? He looked over his shoulder. Oh, yeah. The forbidden clique. What? They have a group name already? Yeah, theyre weird. We just came up with that name. He laughed. The one in the middle isumCherish, I think. And the one on the end isumdang, what the heck is her name? Hey, Sean, whats the new weirdos name, on the end over there? I think its Lacy, something like that. He shrugged his shoulders.

Yeah, thats it. Something about them freaks me out, man. And I dont normally say that about girlsbut themthey are some kind of freaky. I ignored what Sean said about them. All three of the girls looked rather mysterious, in a good way. Lacys hair had waves like the ocean, black with blond highlights. Her dark purple eye shadow matched her dark purple shirt. She had her makeup on thick, with pale skin and big black eyes. I was almost afraid to look at her. She looked like she could kick my butt. Cherish had a darker complexion than the other two, more like minelike a caramel latte. She had on silver and black makeup, but there was something weird going on with her eyesthey were big and shaped like a walnut. No wonder everyone though they looked weird. They had eyes out of this world, literally. She wore all black, like Francesca. She seemed more into her cell phone than anything else. All three of them had on heels that should have required permission slips. But the one that stood out the most was Francesca. I had to talk to her. I had to hear her voice. I wanted to smell her scent, and look into her hypnotic eyes. I watched her as she sat there with her crew. She was reading a book, Lacy was putting on makeup, and Cherish was playing with her cell phone. While everyone at the table was getting hyped about the party, I was contemplating whether I was going to go over to her and say something. Suck it up and just go over there, I thought. I exhaled, to let some of the nerves in my stomach settle, and got up. Hey, big man, where you going? John asked, but I ignored him. Hey, dont do it man, Im telling you. They are weird. I paid no attention to him and kept walking
6

toward their table. I was a nervous wreckI was confident about a lot of things, but she seemed to throw me off in a way I couldnt explain. None of them looked up as I approached the table. I cleared my throat. Umhello. So you ladies are new here? The three of them raised their heads slowly. Hi, Im Alejandro, but everyone calls me Ale. They just stared at me without saying one word. It felt like time stopped. They just continued to stare. So I turned my attention to Francesca. Youre Francesca, right? She was still holding the book in her hands as she stared at me up and down. It looked like she wanted to kill me. She gave me a cold stare, then turned her head and continued reading. Well, thats strange, I thought to myself. Um, well, I know it can be tough being the new girls and all, so why dont you girls come to my buddy Seans party on Friday? I felt like I was talking to myself. Lacy and Cherish turned to look at Francesca. I guess they were looking for some type of OK from her. Was she their leader or something? I wondered. She just kept reading, turning several pages while I was standing there. I didnt know if she was turning the page out of boredom, or if she really could read that fast. Her book was called Born to Bite. The cover was a maroon with a guy on it, and a moon in the back ground. Okay, well, I will see you ladies around. None of them said a word. Lacy went back to her cell, Cherish to her makeup. I felt really stupid. Id humiliated myself completely. I walked back over to the table. I couldnt tell the boys what happened, so I lied.
7

So, what happened with the creepy freaks? Man, youre right, those females are so weird. Ill give them time. She shot you down, huh? John and everyone at the table fell out laughing. Nah, man, you know... Kasey sweating me hecka hard right now. I had to let her down. Youre crazy, you know shes easy? Too easy. Everyone said in unison. Shes like the walking plague, Sean said. So, whats up with the music? You got a DJ? I asked Sean, changing the subject. Yeah. He included the strobe lights and everything. My parents said they were leaving the house all to me, but to make sure no one breaks anything. I said I can handle that. Man, your parents are way too cool. My mom would never let me have a party. And if I did, my sister would tell. Your sister is a blocker, man, but she is fine, though. Hey, dude, thats my sister! Im sorry. I cant help it. I am a man. Tell him, Jay, isnt his sister fine? Jay stopped eating for a moment. Man, if she wasnt such a stuck-up snob I would get with her, but stuck-up snobs and I dont mix. He stuffed a Twinkie in his mouth. Good, I said, I taught her to be that way. So she wont talk to knuckleheads like you guys. Sean, John, and Jay threw food at me.
8

You call your sister a blockerbut youre the blocker. I guess she got that from you, John said, finishing his Pepsi. My sister was two years older than me, but I had to protect her like she was my little sister. Everyone continued their conversation, and I replayed what happened at Francescas table. I didnt understand what her problem was. But I was going to find out.

Man, she is deadly!

I was happy when the day finally ended and we went into the locker room to suit up for practice. Coach came into the locker room while we were getting ready. Everyone knew it was going to be a rough practice, so we were prepared for the worst. You know he started off saying, as he rubbed his bald, shiny head. Then he sighed. You fellas are one in a million. You worked hard yesterday and hard on that field the day before. I think I am going to give you ladies a break. Everyone looked around to make sure he was serious. You sure, Coach? Jay said. Everyone looked at him with a please-shut-upbefore-he-changes-his-mind look. Coach nodded his head. Yes, but dont think I will be doing this all the time. You ladies have a nice night. He waved his clipboard in the air and then left.
9

Everyone was looking around, scared to leave. I guess he felt bad for making us work hard the day before, so he was giving us the day off from practice. We waited ten minutes, just to make sure he didnt come back. Everyone was happy and relievedbut I know we were going to pay for this free day. As we walked out of the gym, Sean ran to catch up with me, saying, Hey, big man, wait up. I turned around. He gave me a piece of paper, and said, Write down your playlist, so I can give it to the DJ on Friday. Man, you know me. Oldest but Goods. Right, right. You should have been born back in the 70s. He laughed, then said, So you told that freaky looking girl about the party. I wanted to slap him for saying that about her. I didnt know why I was reacting this waysomething about her made me want to do crazy things. Like jump in front of her car, or climb a tree knowing that I would fall flat and break a bone or two. Sean, why do you have to call her that? Dude, Im telling you, she is way too weird. Whatever, Sean. See you around. We tapped our fists together and said later. As I was walking to the parking lot, I saw Francesca. She was finally by herself, and she looked to be carrying about ten books from where I was standing. I ran over to help her, saying, Here, let me carry those for you. She had on shades even though it was gloomy out and the ground was full of mud puddles. As I came up alongside her, she looked like she was going to bite me as she open her mouth. Did she just hiss at me? I thought. Maybe I was hearing things.
10

I dont know if you remember my name, but Im Alejandro. But your friends call you Ale. Youre the big man on campus. Youre the star of the football team and you score on average four points per game. Every girl at this school wants you. But youre saving yourself forI dont know who. You dont have a girlfriend, because no one is good enough for you. I was stuck. Who was she, and how did she know so much about me so fast? Kasey told me everything about you. Which I didnt need to know, because I dont care. But it seems as though she has a special interest in you. She saw you talking to me at lunch and she felt the need to mark her territory. I was going to kill Kasey. She had no right to do that. She was like a brick wall blocking the pathway for other girls to walk through. Ugh! She was a pest. Look, Francesca, she is just mad because I wouldnt take her to Seans party on Friday. She has been after me since the ninth grade, and I have no interest in her. She looked at me as we walked. Honestly, I really dont care. Im here in school to do what I have to do, and get out of here. Her pale features seem to complement the gloom of the day. I changed the subject. So where is your car? She pulled out a little black remote with a BMW logo on it. Then she pressed the button, and I heard a chirping noise. There, she said, pointing at a black BMW with tinted windows and black rims. Dang! Your parents must be rich. No, its just me and my auntie. She raised me. My parents died in a car accident a little after I was born.

11

Oh Im sorry, I said, and I was. I knew what it was like to lose one parent, but I couldnt imagine losing both. Well Im not sorry. I never met them. That was cold of her. So, Im not sure if you heard me earlier today when I told you about Seans party, but I would like for you to come. She stopped walking as I finished my sentence and took her shades off. Her eyes were sparkling, and they were hypnotic. I had to blink a few times just to look away. I love your offer, and I would be happy to go, but I dont think your friends are really thrilled about me and my girls. So this freaky chick isnt going, she said, making quotation marks in the air. Im sorry, I didnt know you heard that. Yeah, I have pretty good ears. Look, the guys arethey were just playing around. They didnt mean anything by it. She looked at me like she wanted to rip my throat out. I swallowed hard as she gave me a cold stare. She didnt even blink. I apologize for that. They are just guys. We are really stupid. Sometime we dont think about half the stuff we do. No, you guys dont think, and yes, youre right about the stupid part. We got to her car. She pressed a button and the drivers side door opened. She got in the car real fast, threw the books in the back, and turned on the engine. It purred like a kitten. I knocked on the window. I couldnt see her, the tint on the windows was so dark. She rolled it down. Here, just text me if youre coming, I said, giving her my number,
12

which I normally carry in my pants pre-written-out. You know, just in case. Trying to find a pen and paper is a hassle. I like to be prepared. And I was not going to give up without a fight. She took the piece of paper, looked at it, and threw it on the seat. Well see, she said, and drove off real fast. Man, she is deadly, I thought. Maybe the guys were right. Maybe I should stay away from her and the freaky looking girls. But I couldnt let her go in my mind. I knew it had only been five hours since we met, but it felt like Id known her all of my life. She just needed to come out of her shell. Once she gets to know me shell feel more comfortable, I thought, hoping my logic would somehow ease the tension in my head. I was starting to get this weird feeling in my gut, like falling for her would be like getting alcohol poisoning, but I was willing to go to the ICU for her.

What kind of name is Breaker?

By the time I got home it was pouring down rain again. I walked in through the garage. My moms Lexus SUV was parking inside with the garage door close. We had a three-car garage, although three cars did not occupy those spaces. My moms Lexus was the only car that occupied the garage. My dad left us enough money to last until my sister and I went off to college, graduated, and started our own families. My mom was one spoiled woman when he was alive, but after he died she had no need to buy anything anymore. When my dad died half of her died, too.
13

I walked in the house only to find some dude sitting in the living room. He had slick black hair, a leather jacket, and too-tight jeans. He got off the couch as soon as I walked in, and said, You must be Ale right? Who was this dude, and what gave him that right to call me by my nickname? Uh, yeah. And you are? Breaker. Im here to pick up Alice. Were going to the movies. He was joking right? First of all, there was no way this dudes name was Breaker, and second, there was no way he was going to take my sister out with her jeans on. Breaker? Is that your real name, or is it a nickname? Its my real name. My mom didnt know what to name me. She said she was always dropping things while she was pregnant with me, so she named me Breaker. She couldnt name him something else? Thats it, this date was over. Alice! I yelled at the top of my lungs, and ran up the stairs. Alice, I said as I knocked on her room door. What?! Alice replied as I walked in her room. Who is that dude downstairs who looks like he just came from an Aerosmith concert? He says his name is Breaker. Breaker, Alice? Come on now, you can do better than that. Aleshut up and get out of my room. Tell him I will be down. Uh, no, you tell Mom to do that. Ale, dont be such a butthead. A butthead. Alice, I have one word for youBreaker. What does he intend to break? I did not want any images of my sister and that dude together. I like to keep
14

thinking that my sister is pure. I know she is older than me and in college and all, but shes still my sister. She stood up from the chair in front of her vanity table and took her scarf and wrapped it around her neck. Look, I know youre concerned and you feel the need to protect me, but I dont need you to. I can tell sometimes you feel like you need to step in because Dad is gone, but you dont have to. Its not your responsibility. She came up to me and reached up to rub my cheek. Even though she was older, I was much taller. Look at you, being all protective of your big sister. Then she laughed. I didnt find anything funny. I didnt trust dude downstairs. She went around me and out the door. And I followed behind her. Alice, just promise me one thing? What? If he asks do you want to go to Perry Lake, say no. She laughed. I wondered if college guys take all of their dates to the lake. I did not want my sisters innocence lost, and I definitely did not want to know if shed already lost it. We left out of her room. I stood at the stairs and watched her and the greasy-hair Breaker dude go out the door. She left first, as he held the door open for her. He looked up and waved goodbye to me. I held up my pointer and middle finger, pointed them to my eyes and then at him to let him know that I would be watching him. I saw his Adams apple move as he swallowed and nodded his head. Then he closed the door. Where was my mom at? I wanted to know what she thought of Breaker.

15

Time to relax.

I went downstairs and found my mom in the kitchen, cooking and talking on the phone. I went to the refrigerator and grabbed a Coke, then gave her a kiss. She didnt pay me any mind. I ran up the stairs and closed my door. I sat the Coke can on my desk next to my laptop, turned on the TV, took off my shirt. I looked at myself in the mirror to examine my body. Not to brag, but I had a nice six-pack. My goal was to achieve an eight-pack. Whenever I had the spare time to do situps I would. Before school, after school, before practice, and before bed. Some people might call that being obsessed, and vain. I call it making goals and achieving them. I mean, who doesnt want to look good? I got on the floor and did a total of a hundred sit-ups and sixty push-ups. Then I grabbed a towel off my bed and wiped the beads of sweat off my skin. I could feel the sweat dripping from the top of my head and my hair curling up. Gel could only hold for so long. I sat at my desk and got started on some of my English homework. We had to read Othello and do a 500-word essay. It was due on Friday, which was in two days. I didnt know how I was going to pull out 500 words in such a short amount of time, but I knew it could be done. I was reading and taking notes when my phone rang. I didnt recognize the number. Hello, I said. How dare you invite that freak to Seans party.
16

Kasey? How the heck did she get my number? Yes, or were you waiting for a phone call from her. I debated whether I should hang up in her face, or tell her off. I wasnt in the mood for drama, so I hung up the phone and turned it off, thinking, Ill change my number this weekend. See, this is why I dont date girls that are too forward. They can never take no for an answer. I decided to take a shower and then go downstairs to see what my mom was whipping up in the kitchen. She had the house smelling good, and my stomach was growling. I grabbed a towel from the hallway and went in to the bathroom. I was going to be able to take a long shower tonight since my sister was on a date with the Breaker dude. Dang! The Breaker guy, I remembered. I need to drill him a little more, to see where his mind is at. Shake him up a little. Not literally, but if I have to, I will do that also. I knew my sister would hate my guts if I did, but it was for her protection. I turned on the shower and got in, then let the steam consume the bathroom for about fifteen minutes, then I was out. I dried myself off, put on my boxers, and headed to my room. I put on a little deodorant, threw on a T-shirt and some night pants, and went downstairs. My mom was watching The Biggest Loser on TV. The lights were off and she was curled up on the couch. Is dinner ready, Mom? Yes, everything is on the stove. I went in the kitchen and grabbed a bowl and a spoon out of the dish rackshed made chili, cornbread, and rice. I wasnt a picky eater, and neither was my sister. Our parents raised us to like the simplest things. Even though

17

they could afford extravagate food and things, my parents agreed to raise us how they were raised: with just the bare necessities. Im cool with that. Im just a simple guy. I took the spoon and piled some rice in my bowl. Then I poured in the chili and cut a wedge of cornbread. I turned off the lights and sat down next to my mom. She turned on the lights when I came in so I could see. Thanks, Ma, I said. She looked at my bowl and saw how much food was in it. Well, did you save some for your sister? she asked. Theres enough in there for her, I think she will survive. And besides, shes out with that Breaker dude. I looked at her, and she raised both eyebrows. What is up with him anyway? Did you meet him? I asked, taking a bite of my cornbread. She glanced at me and then back at the TV. Yes, I met him. He seems nice. I stopped eating and looked at her. Ma, he looked like he was wearing her pants, they were so tight. She started laughing. Leave your sister alone. She is in college now, and this is the time in her life when she is trying to find herself. She is going to dateinteresting guys. But it is all a part of the process. And besides, its not like she is going to marry the guy. I felt a twist in my stomach when she said that. I hope not, for her sake. Once I finish watching The Biggest Loser with her, I headed back to my room to finish reading Othello. Wellthats what I was planning to do. Instead I turned on the TV and fell asleep.

18

My heart dropped!
My alarm clock rung at 7 a.m. I didnt want to get up or go to school, but I forced myself, knowing that Francesca was going to be there. I got in the shower, looked in my closet, and found something to wear. My mom and sister had already left for work and school. My mom is an analyst for the local hospital, and Alice went to school full timeI was always the last one to leave. School started at 7:45a, but it was only a five-minute walk. The day started off at the usual pace. I had to sit through English, Chemistry, and Art before Governmentwhich for once I couldnt wait for. As I walked in the class, I looked to see if she was sitting at her desk. And sure enough, she was. She was sitting there reading Scions: Revelation. This book was a red color with a man and a woman on the cover. The woman looked sexy with her hair wet. It almost looked like they were in the shower, or a water fall. Dang, she was just reading a different book yesterday, I though. I wondered how long it took her to read a book. As I walked down the aisle, Kasey looked at me and rolled her eyes. I didnt pay her any attention, just sat down and held my hand up to say hi to Francesca. She looked at me with a blank stare and went back to reading her book. I put my hand up to my mouth to see if I had bad breath. I knew I didnt, because I brush four times a day. Two times in the morning, and two times at night. Nope, its not that, I thought to myself. This was going to be harder than I thought.

19

OK, class, today we are going to talk about the American government in the 1900s. I didnt even see Mrs. Martinez come in. I turned to focus my attention to the front. I was baffled by the way this girl was acting. Maybe I need to let it go, like the guys said. I was taking notes when a piece of paper fell on my notepad. I opened it and it read Sorry for ignoring you. Its just that I hate high school and I didnt want to transfer. Fran. I think my heart dropped a few inches. I was speechless. I wrote back Naw, its cool. I understand how it can be sometimes. Hey, what are you doing tonight? Then I threw the note back to her. She wrote back I have to do homework, why? Then I wrote I would like for you to come to the game. I threw the note back to her. I looked at her in my peripheral vision. She was looking at the note and playing with her pencil like she was contemplating something. Then the note landed on my desk. I opened it Yeahok. Lacy and Cherish will come too, is that cool? I wrote Its a free country.

20

And then threw it back to her. She opened it and laughed. That was like music to my ears. I turned to look at her and she looked up at me and smiled. This day couldnt get any better. Lunchtime came, and I got nachos as always. I will switch it up one day, but that day has not come yet. The guys were talking about the football game last night. Id fallen asleep and missed it. Yeah, that game was a close one. Ale, did you watch it? John asked. Naw, man. I was too busy going crazy. My sister is going out with this dude. And guess what his name is? What? Sean asked. Breaker. Man, what type of name is that? John just nodded his head. Ale, he is one lucky cat to be dating your sister. OK, this was getting old. Yes, my sister was beautifulthis was just why I had to protect her. I guess better him taking her out than you, huh? I threw a chip at Sean and he caught it. Thanks, man. He took the chip and ate it. While they were talking about the game, my mind was somewhere else: on Fran. I looked over my shoulder to see if she was sitting at her tableand she was. She looked up from her book and smiled at me. Lacy and Cherish were looking back and forth at us with one eyebrow raised. Lacy whispered something in Frans ear, and her smile faded away. Then she went back to reading.

21

I wondered what Lacy said to her, but I didnt have time to worry about her friends. Everyone else was just in the backgroundFran and I were the only ones that mattered.

Game Time!

Before I knew it, it was the end of the day. And best of all, it was game day. The bell rung at 2:45p and it was time to go to the gym and get ready. When I walked in, the fellas were already putting on their gear and getting pumped up. Sean was the loudest one of them all. I was ready for battle. I just felt like there was no need to act like wild animals. After I got dressed, Coach called us to come together. I got up from the bench and closed my locker. Then he started with his speech. OK, ladies, settle down. Dont make me look like a fool. NOW LETS KICK THEIR BUTTS! Everyone jumped up, yelling and banging their helmets on the lockers to make more noise. I had to make sure we won this one. Last week we lost, but that was not about to happen this week. It was going to be a good game today. Not only were we going to beat the crap out of the opposing team, but Fran was going to be there to see it. It was almost time for us to go out. I could hear the music and the crowd roaring in the stands. I know this may sound weird, but I had butterflies in my stomach. Probably it was just the nachos.
22

Before every game I normally go inside one of the bathroom stalls in the gym. I pray to God to keep me strong for my family, to help me become the man that He wants me to be. I also talk to my dad, and ask him if he is proud of me. When I ask that, I sometimes get a cold chill down my spine. At first I thought the janitors had turned on the air conditioning, but then I remembered that the air conditioning had been broken for a few years. Then when the cold chill came over me again I told myself that it was my father. I guess he approved. When I was little my dad would have me play sports. I was on the local football team, The Tigers. After every game he would pull me to the side and place his hand on my shoulders and say, Im proud of you. That cold chill felt like his touch. It scared me for a moment, but when I came to the conclusion it was him, I relaxed. After about five minutes of mellowing out, I was ready to hit the field. Everyone on the team was lined up alongside the entrance to the field. I was happy it wasnt raining, because playing in the rain was a nightmare. Coach used to have us play in the mud so we could get used to it. Dont make me look like a fool. NOW GET OUT THERE AND MAKE ME PROUD! Coach said as we ran out in the field. The crowd cheered. The stands were full, and all I could think of was Francesca and whether she was in the crowd. I looked at the bleachers, and it didnt take long for me to find her. She stood out from all the rest of the girls. Maybe it was her style, or maybe it was her pale beauty that drew me, sucking me into her world. I didnt know what it was, all I knew was that she was sitting on the third row to my right.

23

I couldnt stop looking at her. The strands of her hair blew in the wind like they were dancing. She looked at me, smiled, and waved softly. I held my hand up back at her. I felt someone shove me. Get your head in the game, Sean said to me and gave me a look of scorn. My head is in the game. Its in something, but not in the game, he said as he looked back at Francesca. You need to let that go. Whatever, dude, lets just win this game, I said as I put my helmet on. Calderonyou up. That was my cue. It was on.

Before I knew it, wed won 3 to 0. I passed the ball to Sean with six seconds left on the board. He ran like his life depended on it. I can run, but he was a lot faster than I was. The other teams defense was on point, but we were unstoppable. Everyone cheered as victory permeated the air. We headed to the gym, and I saw Francesca on my way to change. I ran to her and told her to wait for me. She smiled and said OK, as Lacy and Cherish eyed each other. I was getting the feeling like they didnt like me too mucheven though they didnt know me. Maybe they were just protective of their friend. I hurried up into the locker room to change. As I walked through the door John called me, Hey, Ale, you want to go celebrate tonight at Tackle Tims Pizza? Dang, how was I going to get out of this one? I know how the guys felt about me talking to Francesca, but I really didnt care what they said.
24

Naw, I have plans. You guys go ahead. I walked over to my locker, sat on the bench, and turned the combination to open it. What you planning on doing? John asked. Is it me or does it seem like everyones up in my business? Im going home andfinish my report on Othello. John was taking off his gear, and he narrowed his eyes at me like I was up to something. He stopped what he was doing and sat next to me, put his hand on my shoulder. Would this have anything to do with the Francesca girl? Why is everyone in my business and questioning me? Yes, this does have something to do with heris that a problem? He took his hands off my shoulders and held them up as if to say he was backing off. Alright, its cool, but she is not right for you. Thanks, Dad, but I think I got this, I said sarcastically. He was worse than Kasey. It seemed like ever since Francesca and her followers came on the scene everyone has been actingweird.

Seduce Me
I took a quick shower and put on some fresh clothes. I like to change into fresh clothes after a game. It makes me feel more relaxed. I doubled up on the deodorant and headed out while everyone was still talkingI didnt want to make her wait too long. I walked out of the gym and into the parking lot. It was dark and foggy, and the lights were dim. I was looking around, but I couldnt see heror anything else. I hope she didnt get
25

frustrated with waiting and then left, I thought. But I was only in the gym for fifteen minutes. I was just about to give up when a soft hand touched my shoulder. I felt a chill down my back. It wasnt a scary chill but a chill like I was been seduced. I knew it was her, but I slowly turned around to make sure. And it was. I almost thought you left, I said. She smiled. I grabbed her hand and put it up against my face. Youre freezing. Let me give you my coat. She pulled her hand back and rubbed it against the other one. Ohyeah, I have a rare blood disorder that causes my blood to be cold. No biggy. She smiled as she quickly changed the subject. You have really nice eyes, she said as she ran her fingers through my hair. Was this girl trying to seduce me? I wondered. I really didnt know how to respond to this. Just a few days earlier shed turned me down, and now she was playing with my hair. I didnt know if I should enjoy myself or start asking questions. Where are Cherish and Lacy? Ohthey went home. They got tired of waiting. Good. I dont think they like me too much. She chuckled. I dont think your friends like me too much. She did have a point there. She inhaled deeply and looked off into the night sky. It almost looked like she was going to cry. Are you OK, Francesca?

26

She turned to look at me. Theres something you need to know about me. Im not like other girls. I interrupted her. And thats why I like you so much. Youre not like other girls. In fact, youre perfect. I took her cold, pale hand and kissed the back of it. She gasped and opened her mouth like she was going to say something. Forget what our friends say about us. Who cares? I am only feeling youFranI paused for a few secondsand I hope youre feeling me, too? She looked down at the ground as her hands stayed in mine. She wrapped her arms around my neck and moved closer to me. Falling for me is dangerous. I like danger. Im pretty sure you do...Ale. As we stood there I toyed with the idea of asking her again if she wanted to come to Seans party tomorrow. I knew how they felt about her, and I knew how she felt about them. But I figured once everyone get to know one another, the atmosphere would be less tense. So remember I told you about Seans party the other day when you ignored me? She released her hold on my neck. I got the feeling that this was a subject she didnt want to discuss. No, she said, before I could even get what I wanted to say out. Come on, why not? Because I dont want to be somewhere that I am not wanted. I could see her point. Just come. Please? For me. I tried to put on my cutie sad puppy face. I was hoping it would work.
27

OK, I will go, but on one condition. Anything. Cherish and Lacy have to come with me. Are you their leader or something? Why do they have to come with you everywhere? She threw up her hands. Fine, I wont go. OK, if the royal subjects cant live without their leader then fine. They can come, too. Fine. She turned to walk away. Where are you going? I asked. She turned and said, Home. Youre going to leave me here by myself? Your friends are coming. I didnt understand what she was saying until I heard some noise from the guys coming out of the gym. When I looked back at her she was gone. I look around the parking lot to see if I could see her car, but I saw no sign of her. Hey, big man, I thought you had plans, Sean said, walking my way. Oh, yeah, I do. I was justuh, talking to someone. Sean looked around to see who it was that I was talking to. I dont see anyone. They left. He looked at me in suspicion again. I was getting annoyed with all of them checking up on me and stuff. I changed the subject. So you guys off to Tackle Tims, huh? Yeah, man, I wish you would come.
28

Naw, I really need to get started on that book report. Alright. Call me if you finish early. We may go up to Perry Lake. Perry Lake? On a school night? Yes, Mom, on a school night. Is that OK with you? he said, punching me on my arm. Perry Lake was the spot. It was a very special lake where all of the guys take girls theyre dating. The lake was the perfect setting for getting lucky. When nighttime came and the moon was full, there was a reflection of the moon on the water. The trees were huge and the branches stretched what seem to be miles and miles. Id only been there once, but the rest of the guys went there all the time. Last time Id gone I drove my moms car, someone stole it. Good thing she had a tracking device. I guess. Well, you know I will never go back there again. Dont be such a baby. Whatever, Sean, see you tomorrow, I said as I started walking home. OK, dont forget to call me. I kept walking, giving a last wave over my shoulder. One thing I was not and will never be is a follower. When my dad was alive he would always say, If you lead they will follow. I wasnt sure what he meant by that, and I didnt dare ask.

He is going to die!
I decided to take my time walking home. It only took ten minutes to get there. When I walked in the door, the lights were all out except the kitchen light. I put my bag on the stairs and walked toward the kitchen.
29

Hello, Im home. I dont know if anyone cares but we I stopped when I saw my sister sitting at the kitchen table holding a bag of frozen peas in her hand. I didnt want to go off and speculate, but the Breaker dude was going to die. I walked quickly over to her. I didnt see my mom at the kitchen sink. I saw nothing but the blue and purple imprint around my sisters eyes. WHAT HAPPENED? And do not give me the summary, I want the details. I rolled up my sleeves and balled up my fist. I could barely focus on what my sister was trying to tell me. I saw red, blood, broken bones, and eventually red and blue lights from the cops being called on me. Nothing, would you please calm down. How can I calm down when my sisters face looks like a rainbow? Enough, Ale. Your sister is hurt right now. Im more hurt than she isI want to know where he lives, his phone number, I need to know where his parents stay just in case he tries to run there. He doesnt have any parents. They died when he was born. I was hearing that a lot lately. What was up with that? Good, that means no one would come looking for him. Alejandro Calderon, enough! Stop that! My mom said as she slapped me on the back of my head. I didnt feel it. The angry blood rushing to my skull had numbed my sense of pain. Hewas different tonight. At first he was the nicest guy and he showered me with gifts almost every day. Then tonight I went over to his housewell, his friends house. I walked in and there was a group of guys standing around. I thought nothing of it.
30

I waited in the hallway next to the door after his friend Jim opened the door for me. He was a big guy, scary-looking, so I tried not to look at him too much. They all looked at me weird, so I backed up toward the door. Then Breaker came up from behind me and said Going somewhere? I turned around and told him Lets go, the movie starts in an hour. Whats the rush? he said and then walked me into the living room. They all looked at me like they were hungry. She stopped in the middle of her story as tears rolled down her face. I wasnt sure if I was listening to the story. All I could hear were the wonderful sounds of Breakers bones snapping in half. I wanted to rip his skin off piece by piece. I was not a violent person, but when someone disrespected my family, I had no chose but to be. My father put me in charge, to be the man of the house. I know that it is my job to protect my mother and sister. I came back to myself when she got to the part I wanted to hear. I wanted to hear all the details so that I could do the same to him. He told me to have a seat and that I should relax. I told him I wanted to go. By that time I was feeling very uncomfortable. We sat down on the couch and he had his arm around my waist, stroking my arm with his hands. I was feeling so creeped out I felt the need to get up. But he took my arm and pulled me back on the couch in an aggressive way. I was in tears because I didnt know want to do. Then he turned around to get something off the small table next to the couch. It was a needle and a test tube with liquid. Oh, my God, he tried to dope my sister up so he could have his way with her. I tried to stay calm. After she was done telling me everything I was going to make a call.
31

He grabbed my hand. I was trying to pull it back, but his grip was so tight. The other guysthere were four of themwere acting nonchalant as they watched him do this to me. Some rock music was playing in the background. The only thing in the living room was a big couch and a coffee table filled with lab-like equipment. As I tried to get my hand back so I could run out of the door, he pricked me on my middle finger to try and draw blood. I knew then that Ale was right. Im not even gonna say I told you so, I said, wanting her to finish. I had so many ideas in my head. I was going to need some very sharp knives and some duct tape. So once he drew the blood from my finger he released my hand. He then took the blood and put a small drop into this tube. I started slowly inching my way toward the door. Then this big guy that looked like the Hulk came in the room dressed in cheaplooking black leather. He said Is she the one? Breaker shook the tube as everyone watched the colors change, from white to pink. Then Breaker said, Noshe is not. The Hulk guy looked at me. Then he walked away and yelled, BRING ME THE ANTIDOTENOW! Breaker was so upset he slapped me in the face, which knocked my body back against the couch, and I fell to the floor. I got up and left. No one came after me. I ran home as fast as I could. My heart was racing like NASCAR. But I stayed calm for Alices sake. I turned to my mother, who was sitting across from my sister with tears in her eyes. She turned to look at me, and at that moment I knew what I had to do. Mom, call the police so Alice can tell them what happened. I need to take a walk. Aledont do anything stupid, my mom said.
32

Ale, just leave it alone. I will be fine. It sounds like he was looking for something or someoneI dont know. Alice shook her head in confusion. Her eyes shifted back and forth, like she was trying to solve a calculus problem in her head. We all knew she was smart, but this was one problem no one could solve but me. I walked over to her and looked in her eyes. Around one was the color of her caramel complexion, which was her skin tone. And the other one was the color of purple Skittles, which was the one that punk hit. I crouched down so I could get a better look at her. Alice, youre my sister, and its my job to protect you. I cannot let him get away with this. I said this calmly, but I wanted to tear the whole place up. She took her hand and placed it on my cheek. At first I thought she was going to try and get me to change my mind. But then she looked at me with horror. Ale! What is wrong with your eyes? What? I said with confusion. Your eyes, Ale, they are blood-red. Mom, look, she said as she turned my face so my mom can see. Oh, my goodness, Ale! Are you OK? I was beginning to get scared. What do you guys mean? I jumped up and ran to the bathroom upstairs. When the lights came on, I was in shock. My eyes looked like two cherries ready for pickin. I ran some cold water in the sink and splashed the water on my face and in my eyes. Just then my cell phone rang. I grabbed a towel and answered it quickly, before it went to voicemail. Hello, I said as I wiped my face.
33

Hi. It was a sweet-sounding voice on the other end of the phone. No one else in this world could give me chills and goosebumps at the same time. Hey, Francesca. How did you know it was me? I just know these things. She laughed. She almost made me forget about the situation with Breaker and my sister. I was just calling to see how youre doing? Im fine, I said in a shaky voice. I was still upset, and my eyes looked like part of a fruit basket. Hey, um, could we go somewhere and talk? This was strange. I cant right now, Imhaving a family emergency. I really wanted to say, Yes, I will go to the end of the world with you. It killed me to say no, knowing how hard it was to get her to even talk to me. OhOK. I understand. She took a deep breath in and then out like she needed to get something off her chest. Is everything OK, Francesca? Yeswellyes, it is. Everything is fine. I just wanted toyou know, get out and walk. Toumget some air. She chuckled to herself. I thought about her request and the fact that she was still interested in me. Talking to her on the phone, Id forgotten how red my eyes were. But I didnt worry about thatI could always put some shades on. Our relationshipor future relationshipwas hanging on by a thread. I didnt know how long till that thread would break.
34

OK, I agreed. Itll be good to get out of here before I go insane. Great, Ill come and get you. I gave her directions to my house. I wasnt sure what the urgency was, but I was looking forward to seeing her.

Blood of a what?

After we hung up, I walked over and looked in the mirror. To my surprise, my eyes were back to normal. Im bugging, I thought to myself, but then I remembered that Alice had seen my eyes, too. I was baffled, but glad that my eyes cleared up before Fran came over. I grabbed my silver and black Raiders jacket and my keys, turned off my light, and went downstairs. Where are you going, Ale? my mother said in a frantic way when she saw me. Im going to meet this girl Francesca. Ale, I really dont want you going out. Ma, its OK. Yes, I am pissed about what Breaker did to Alice, but Im not stupid enough to do something to him the same night. Just call the police, so Alice can file a report. Ale, she said, you cannot protect everyone you love. That struck a nerve. There was only one thing I felt my father put me in charge of, and that was to protect my family.

35

I turn to look into my mothers beautiful soft eyes. They were shaped like lemons. Mom, I said as we stood by the front door. I am not going to do anything to himtonight. I justI just need to get some air. I will be back in a few minutes. In the meantime, call the police. I turned the gold knob to open the door and walked out. My mom called out Be careful, just as Francesca pulled up in her black BMW. I opened the door and got inside. Hey, I said. Hi, she said with a half-crooked smile. I was hoping for something more than a hi. Maybe a kiss. But she just turned her head and peeled off. The car smelled of leather and roses. So whats up with your family? she asked as she kept her eyes on the road. Well, my sisters punk boyfriend hit her, so now she has a black eye. Is there a reason why he hit her? Are you saying that my sister deserved it? NoI just want to know why he hit her. She was driving a little too fast in the residential neighborhood. Uh! Can you slow down? Children play in this area. Its nighttime. Why did he hit her? I dont know, she said something about some big Hulk-like dude coming into the room asking if she was the one or something. I dont know. She sped up faster. I saw the shadows of the trees going by faster and faster. We were driving so fast, the parked cars alarms were going off. Can you slow down please? Ale, listen to me. I need you to tell me everything your sister said.
36

Can you slow down first? She slammed on the brake, and I almost hit my head on the dashboard. She turned off the engine and turned to me slowly. Tell me everything your sister said. So I did. After I told her, she looked off into the moon and the shining stars. The moon was full, and her eyes began to glow. I thought maybe she had some contacts with special effectsyou know, the kind you get for Halloween. She backed away from the light of the moon like it burned her eyes. Blood of a wolf. Excuse me? I said. Blood of a wolf. He was looking for the blood of a wolf. Your blood. Wait, I said, holding my hands up. What do you mean, my blood?

The Lukos

She sighed and dropped her head. Vora was right. She was right this whole time. Who is Vora, and what are you talking about? Breaker was not after your sister. He was after you. He thought your sister carried the blood of a wolf, which he is what he is. That mutt! WaitI am not awolf. That stuff is not real. I am a normal human. Man, the guys were right about youyou are a freak. I unlocked the door so that I could get out. I didnt know where I was, but I would find my way home.
37

How are your eyes? she said to me as I was getting out of the car. How did she know about that? I thought to myself. I turned back around and asked her. How did you know about that? We need to go see Vora right away. The shifting process will start soon. She will know what to do. But Id already gotten out of the car and slammed the door. Id had enough. I should have known she was too good to be true. Clearly she needed some mental help. Ale! she yelled after me. I heard her door slam and her footsteps behind me, and a hand grabbed my arm. I turned around real fast. What? You have to come with me, Ale. You need to see Vora. Look, I really dont have time for your games, I said, walking away from her as fast as I could. Why do I always seem to fall for the ones with a loose screw? I was thinking. Man, I cant wait to tell Sean and the fellas about this nutcase. Then she got my attention. Tell me how your father really died! she yelled after me. I stopped walking and turned around. What? My father has nothing to do with this. Your father has everything to do with this. Your father was friends with our leader, Vora. He saved her from the Lukos leader, Heath. Even though he was Lukos himself. My father was a doctor. I stood still, confused, as she continued walking toward me. She looked up at me with her soft, beautiful eyes. This girl was nuts, but she had a way of capturing my attention.
38

But I was still upsetI could feel my blood boiling. She knew nothing about me, my father, or my family. I took a deep breath in order to calm myself down. She grabbed my arm again. You have to believe me. I will show you. She took my hand and bit me. Ouch! You crazy Look, she said as she held my hand up. The blood from the bite was running my hand. But then suddenly it stopped, and rolled back in to the hole shed made with her sharp teeth. The wound healed before my eyes. I couldnt believe itId seen stuff like this on TV, but I never thought it was real. I examined my hand, flipping it back and forth. No scar. No bruise. And no pain. How did you do that? I didntyou did. You have the blood of the wolf. Youre able to shift to wolf form and heal fast. The Lukos process will start soon. Its a maturing process. Once you mature your body will be able to do more than just heal its self. I looked turned my hand over againthe marks were still gone. I was completely freaked out. Maybe Im in a dream and will wake up soon. No youre not dreaming. Trust me. I know everything is new to you, but you have to come with me to Voras. She is the only one that can help you. I wasnt sure who to trust. First Breaker violated my sister. And now this. I dont know who you are, or what you are for that matter, but this is crazy. Why me? You carry the She began to say when her phone rang. Hey Yeah Hes with me now What? NOW! OK, we will meet you at Voras. She hung up the phone quick.
39

Who was that? I asked. I knew it had to be something serious. She didnt look me in the eyes, just bit the bottom of her lip and started looking around like someone was after her. Then she closed her eyes, raised her nose in the air, and sniffed in and then out. When she opened her eyes I had to take a few steps back. Whats up with your eyes? I asked as I looked at them. They were glowing like cats eyes do in the night. Both eyes looked like light green marbles with a hint of yellow. My eyes glow when I can sense the enemy is near. Come, we have to go, they are tracking you. She grabbed my hand and we ran to the car. I got in the passenger side, and before I could close the door she had already pulled off the curb. Dang, youre fast. Slow down, no one is chasing us. She looked in the rearview mirror. Yes, they are. I turned around and saw a black unmarked car right behind us. Where did they come from? I said, holding on to the door handle. She was driving over 100 miles per hour. They smelled you. They know who you are now. What makes me so special? She turned right and then left to get on the freeway. The car behind us sped up and hit the back of the BMW. I am just a wolf, right? So what is so special about me? I yelled. She leaned over and opened the glove compartment. This girl is packing, I thought as she pulled out a shiny silver pistol. She adjusted the gun with both hands and took the safety off.

40

I quickly grabbed the wheel as we started veering onto the shoulder. Can you watch the road?! I yelled as I pulled the car back onto the freeway. My stomach turned and twisted into small knots. My intestines were now shaped like a balloon animal. I got it, she said as gunshots fired at the car. She hissed. As her anger grew, so did her teeth. OK, what are you? Cerna Kocka. Coach? What? Cerna Kocka, it means Black Cat in Czech. She turned to look at me with those glossy eyes of hers. Then she turned her head back to the road. I was just staring at her, searching for some understanding of what was happening. I felt like I was in some twisted nightmare that I couldnt wake up from. Bullets keep hitting the car, only to bounce back from what was apparently a bulletproof exterior. You find me disgustingdont you? she said as she continued to drive like a madwoman. I sighed. There was no going back to my normal teenage life. Being the star of the football team, and hanging out with the guys. I could forget Seans party tomorrowthere was no telling where I would be. I decided to forget all that teenage stuff for now, and just go with the flow.

41

Lets ditch these fools! I said. Francesca smiled at me, showing her sharp teeth. I was glad that Id found out that she was a catwoman or whatever before I kissed her. That would have been the shock of a lifetime.

I am in a nightmare!

The high-speed chase continued. It felt like I was playing Grand Theft Auto. The only thing different is if you get shot you dont have any lives to spare. Lets switch seats so you can get a better shot. I was getting into it. She nodded her head in agreement. I decided not to fight against whatever was going on and just go with it. There were a lot of questions going through my mindI just hoped wed make it through so I could get some answers. Your questions will be answered. We just need to get through this and get to Vora, Francesca said, as we switched seats quickly, the car still going over 100. Is she reading my mind? I wondered. Yes, but I will explain everything later. OK, I said, reminding myself to be careful about what I was thinking. The bullets kept coming. Francesca loaded up with more bullets and rolled down the window. Im going to try and hit the gas tank, to blow it up. You just keep the car steady and fast. I nodded.

42

As she was easing out of the window I looked in the life mirror a saw a black gun pointing out of the window of the black sedan, aiming at our gas tank. I swerved to the right to try and throw his aim offunsuccessfully. Francesca, get inside! I yelled. Three shots went off. The car started to wobble, and then I lost control. I turned toward the passenger side of the carFrancesca was gone. Oh, my God, did she fall out? I looked for her in the rearview mirror, but I couldnt see anything, so I stopped and made a quick U-turn. But the turn was too tight, and the car flipped over. Next thing I knew, I was on the ground and the car was on top of me. I struggled to move, but stopped when I heard footsteps coming my way. Someone was speaking, but not in English. Then some black boots appeared. I tried to move, but my leg was caught in the steering wheel. Pesunout do auta, someone said, and the car moved. Well well well, we have been looking for you. Two guys, one blond hair and the other with brown hair, grabbed me by my shoulders and lifted me up. Where is she? I asked. Your pet cat is dog food now. Come with us. We have been looking for you. I am not going anywhere with you. The dark-haired guy sighed. I was hoping you would cooperate. He lifted his hand and signaled to the blond dude, who pulled a silver syringe out of his black jacket. I struggled to get away, but these dudes had a tight grip on my arm. No, no, no, no, dont struggle my little puppy. You will get your chance to fight. I felt a sharp pain on my left side. Then the dark-hair dudes pale face faded away.

43

Ale, Ale, can you hear me man, wake up. The voice sounded so far away. I felt like someone had smashed me in the head with a bat. My body ached all over, and I was laying on what seemed to be a cold steel table. Ale, you OK? The voice sounded familiar. Sean? Is that you? Yeah, man, its me. Dude, you OK? I slowly opened my eyes, blinking against the light. It was so bright. Dude, I had the craziest dream, I said. I tried to move my arms, but they wouldnt move. ManWhat theWhat is going on? Sean, what the heck is this? Seans smile turned into a grin only the Grinch would approve of. Ahh! He is awake. A voice came from behind me. I tried to move my head to see who the voice belonged to, but my head was restrained as well. Oh, my gracious pup. So young and full of energy, but you dont know what to do with your gifts just yet. A button was pressed and the steel bed elevated from horizontal to vertical. What do you want from me? I asked the voice, who hadnt yet revealed himself to me. Its so sad living like a human your whole life. So sickening when you could be my right hand. My second in command, next to the alpha wolf. I heard footsteps close in next to me, and then I saw his face. Breaker! I wanted to rip his throat out. Something was boiling inside of me. It felt like hot lava.

44

I knew I would get your blood boiling the way its supposed to. He looked at his watch. Its almost time. He walked over to an island in the middle of the room covered in white cloth. What do you want from me? I asked, looking over at him and Sean. I was surprised to see that Sean was in on this, though nothing should have surprised me at this point. You have a rare blood, my young pup. Blood that only old dogs dream about. He laughed like a mad scientist. Your blood can create a great army of hundreds, maybe thousands of us. How do you know I am the one youre looking for? Oh, my young one, I know youre him. Breaker took a syringe off the island counter, which was loaded with all kinds of surgical tools. He came closer and stuck the syringe into my arm. Ouch! I said. Of course, he had no medical training drawing blood from my arm. He then put some of the blood from the syringe into a tube with some white liquid. Ah, yes! Perfect, the mad scientist said. Your father knew you were special. He tried to hide you for as long as he could. He sucked his teeth and shook his head. Its a shame he did not cooperate with us. He told us he would rather die than to give his blood to produce unintelligent beings. I refused to believe him. You know nothing about me or my father. Oh, on the contrary, I do. You see, your father wasoh, how I can put thisa traitor. He went against his own kind to save some cat named Vora. We were instructed
45

to burn down their village on Purr Island. But your father felt sorry for the felines. Heath was very, very upset when he found out. With one spared cat he knew that the Cerna Kockas would rise again out numbering us. So he wanted to take your fathers blood and create more Lukos. But before he could discipline him for his treason, your father vanished. It took us years to sniff him out. Your father broke the Lukos number-one rule: Never form an alliance with a cat. Breaker looked like he had tasted something bad when he spoke about the black cats. They are sneaky creatures. Just like your pet, Francesca. He walked closer to me. See how she came into your heart. She was using you to stop us. But now that I have you here there is no stopping us. He smiled like he had found a pot of gold. Ugly leprechaun. What happened to her? Where is she? My friend, she is roadkill. Now, for the grand finale. Lets see if your blood will work on aregular human. Shall we? I watched his every move. I could not believe this was happening. Breaker? He turned around at the sound of his name. Yes, my young pup? How did my father really die? Breaker dropped his head down and closed his eyes like he was mourning my fathers death. Then he sighed and raised his head up. Your father killed himself. That hit my heart hard. It felt like someone punched me in the chest and took out my heart. I dropped my head, too, my fathers face flashing in my mind. Youre lying, I said in a low voice.

46

Im sorry, my young one. But if I was lying He came closer to me and whispered in my ear. Then why do we need you? Youre the antidote. Youre just what we need. Thank your father for creating you. My father killed himself to protect himself, and me. He knew that the Lukos wanted himwell, not him, but his blood. And his alliance with the cats was even more reasons for them to drain him, then kill him. Things were getting too heavy for me. Just this morning I was a teenager...now I am a Lukos. A wolf.

Stlet! Stlet!

I was still attached, upright, to the cold table when Breaker left to get his lab rat. He needed a human to test my blood on. I wasnt surprised that he had captured a human and kept it around for experimental purposes. Sean was still standing in the corner looking like a bodyguard. So all of these years you couldnt tell me what you were, or who you were? I asked him. He looked at me and smiled. There was no need. I was ordered to befriend you. Heath wanted to make sure that we had the right one. He wasnt sure if the gene was carried on to you or your sister. So he had Breaker pose as a college student and start dating your sister. When she came to the party, we tested her to see if she was a carrier. To our surprise she wasnt, even though she is the oldest. So there was one person leftand thats you. Sean, you were my best friend. How could you do this?
47

I know, and I am sorry. Now you see why we were so tight. He came up to me and touched me on the shoulder. We are the same. We are Lukos. He had pride in his voice. NoIm nothing like you. Well, whether you want to believe it or not, youre exactly like me. Only you have a little human blood in you, which may be it a little hard for you to shift. But dont worry, he said, patting me on the shoulder, Breaker has a serum so you can shift now. You wont be able to shift a will until you mature. I was really getting freaked out by all of this. I felt like I could not trust anyone. Was my mother my mother? Was my sister my sister? The only person I felt I could trust was Fran, and now she was dead. I had no one. I heard a loud yell coming from the hall Breaker had disappeared into. There was yelling in a language I didnt understand. I looked at Sean, and he looked at me, with fear of the unknown in his eyes. A least whatever was coming down the hall, he would be able to run from it. Breaker came running in the room looking like a messed-up surgeon from Nightmare on Elm Street. Ti koky pichz. Zskejte kousek zbra, Breaker said, as he ran to some cabinets, which were loaded with silver guns. He grabbed one and threw one to Sean. Stlet! Stlet! Get me out of here! I yelled, but of course no one was listening to me. Breaker and Sean stood side by side, bracing themselves for whatever was coming. I tried to wiggle my hands out of the straps.

48

Suddenly everything was quiet, and then at last the beast revealed itselfthemselves. It was three black cats. One was bigger than the other twoit crept slowly up on Breaker and Sean, like they were its prey. Shoot it now! Breaker yelled at Sean. Sean held up his gun, but before he could shoot, the animal reared up on its back legs and lunged at him. The other two lunged at Breaker as he began to shootbut the idiots gun wasnt loaded. As the three cats attacked the two of them, I kept trying to get out of the restraints. Then I saw another cat coming down the hall. It galloped with grace, and its eyes looked so familiar. I paused for a second. No, it cant be, I said out loud to myself. We stared at each other as the cat came toward me. The closer it got, the faster my heart began to beat. Was this animal going to attack me? If it smelled me it would know that I am one of them. My mind rushed through the possibilities. OneId get eaten. The worst outcome. Two.theyd kill Breaker and Sean and leave me here for I dont know how long. And finally threethey chew the restraints off me, chase after me like they do all of their food, and then eat me. Kind of like house cats play with mice before they eat them. The cat slowly lifted up on its back legs and motioned toward my arm. It opened its mouth. I braced myself, closing my eyes and holding my breath. If I was going to die, I didnt want a chewed-off arm to be the last image I saw. But my eyes quickly opened when I felt a pair of cold, soft hands on my arm. I opened my eyes wider when I found Fran standing next to me, taking off the restraints.

Cerna Kockas (Black Cats)

My heart skipped two beats when I saw her. I thought you were dead. She smiled, showing her shiny white teeth. No, when I fell out of the car I forced myself to keep rolling, into the forest. They assumed that the impact of the concrete would kill me. Boy, were they wrong. Dumb dogs, she said, laughing to herself. She unlocked the rest of the restraints holding me down. Dang, I said, rubbing the red circles that were imprinted on my wrist. I looked around and saw Sean and Breaker laid out on the floor. The other three black cats had changed into their human form. I knew there was something about him I didnt like, Lacy said as she knelt down, checking Sean for weapons. Are theydead? I asked, hoping that Sean wasnt. Even though hed been lyin g to me, how could I just throw away three years of friendship? Youre gonna have to, Francesca said, answering the question in my head. I just nodded, trying to take in everything around me. We must go, said a tall red-headed woman, who I figured was the tallest cat, the one that attacked Sean. She looked to be about 35. Thats Vora. And shes 135, to be exact, Fran said, grinning. OK, youre going to have to stop doing that, I said. Youre freaking me out. She grinned and grabbed my hand. Are they dead? I asked again, looking back at the bodies that lay on the floor behind us.
50

Do you really want me to answer that? Fran asked as I followed her into the hallway. I shrugged my shoulders. I guess not, I said to myself. As we ran down the hallway, we passed a room with a human, caged like an animal. I guessed that this was the human that was going to be testing my blood. Wait! I said, and all five of us came to a halt. What are we going to do with her? I asked, pointing at the caged human. Everyone looked at Vora. Fran, cut the bars and let her loose, she said. Fran nodded to her, and as she raised her hands, sharp claws grew out of them. She cut into the bars and, with no effort, each bar fell to the floor. Way cool, I said out loud. The woman got out of the cage and ranjust like that, she was gone. So much for thank you, Cherish said with attitude. We made our way out of the buildingthe sun was just beginning to rise. Everyone get in, Vora said, and Fran, Lacy, and I climbed into back of a black SUV. The inside was just like Frans BMW, the same tinted windows and everything. It smiled like it was hot off the showroom. Vora climbed in the passenger side, and as we drove away she pressed a button on a remote and the building blew up. Get us home, she said to Cherish, who was driving. After this day Im going to need some serious help, I thought. Fran grabbed my hand and smiled at me. I guess this day can last a little while longer.

51

The Truth

After driving about two hours, we came to some mountains. We are we? I asked Fran. Were at Voras house. Are you sure? She looked at me with those big glowing eyes and smiled. Yes, Ale, Ive been here a million times. I looked out the window, but all I saw were trees and rocks. After five minutes of driving up the mountain, Cherish stopped in front of a mini-mansion that looked like it was imported from Egypt. We all climbed out of the truck. This is nice, I said. You should see the inside, Lacy said as she walked ahead of me. You ladies go ahead inside. I want to talk with Alejandro alone, Vora said, her voice commanding but not harsh. Fran rubbed me on the back, then followed Cherish and Lacy inside. My eyes followed her up the steps and inside the glass door. You love her, dont you? Vora asked, breaking my concentration. I care about her deeply. So, therefore, you love her? she asked again. I didnt respond. To say that you love someone carries a big responsibility. One that I didnt feel prepared for. But you are prepared. Waityou read minds, too? My thoughts are not safe.
52

Vora laughed hysterically. I took that as a yes. Come, follow me. I have to show you something. She walked gracefully, toward the back of her house. I didnt know where we were going, so I followed her. She stopped at a box-like platform that was set in the ground; it was made of wood and covered with dust. She bent down and lifted it up. Underneath was a steel plate in the same shape, with a combination lock on it, which she opened. Come, follow me, she said, stepping down into the box. What is this? I asked. I was getting more and more curious. You will see, she instructed. I said no more and followed her into the holeit was completely dark, except for the small amount of sunlight creeping in from up top. Vora clicked on a light. It was a laboratory with all kinds of equipment set up. I walked around the small space and looked at the counter, only to find a picture of me and my father flying a kite by the beach. Is this where my father worked? Yes. Thirty years ago I moved to the States, because the Lukos had already taken over most of Purr Island. My kind was very few in number. Your father saved my life. The Lukos was trying to take over our island. They burned our homes and most of our people. I was hiding behind a small tree as I watched them kill my family. Your father spotted me. He saw that I was afraid, so he took me to the sea and put me in one of the boats the Lukos sailed in. I sailed for hours till I came to another island. Years later, we met up with each other here in the states. He asked me if I could build a lab that was not visible. I told him for the man that saved my life I would build a castle. He laughed, but
53

said that he only wanted a lab. We did not speak very often, because he was in hiding from the Lukos. They found out what he did and called him a traitor. They wanted to kill him, but first they wanted to take his blood. A few days before he died, he told me he was working on an serum that would suppress his scent. He wanted to become human and blend in. He worked for a nearby hospital so that he could help save people. When he got married he had the cutest little girl, and not long after that he had a son. He feared that you would be a carrier. And sure enough you are. He tried to work quickly on the serum, but he did not have enough time. I got word that the Lukos were on U.S. soil and searching for him, and I told him immediately. His last words to me were, Tell my son about me. Then he hung up the phone. It took me days to find out what happened, and my heart was grieved. This was a lot to take in. I didnt know what to say. I know this is a lot to process, but I assure you that I will try and protect you as long as possible. This mind-reading thing is annoying. Sorry. Its OK, its not your fault. You cant help it. The lab got quiet as I tried to understand everything. So if I am a Lukos, can I change into a wolf? The correct word is shift, and no, not yet. You have to mature first. When will that happen?

54

When your body is ready. There is as process called transformace it mean to transform. Right now its trying to figure itself out under all of those teenage human hormones you have. She chuckled, and so did I. I ran my hand through my hair. So the wolvesI mean, the Lukosthat were in the building are dead, so now what? Not all of them are. One very important Lukos is missing: their leader, Heath. She walked past me and toward the stairs, to climb back up. But I though Breaker was Alpha. Right? He wish. Heath just had Breaker do his dirty work Wait, if he is still alive, that means hes still after me? Correct. So what do we do? We wait to find out his next move. In the meantime, you need to train and finish school. What about my mom and my sister? Do they know about me? No. And they dont need to know. Once you finish school, you are going to enlist in the U.S. Army. Really? No, but that is what we are going to tell them. I nodded my head, agreeing with everything that Vora was telling me. This was a trip, but I was ready for the adventure. What do I do next?

55

Talk to Francesca. Though you love her, a Cerna Kocka and a Lukos are forbidden to mingle. But something tells me that will soon change, she said, winking back at me and heading up the stairs. I took one last look at my fathers lab, then followed her up the steps. Vora turned off the light and closed and locked the invisible lab. I had a lot to think about. People were after me. Well, not people exactlymy own kind.

The Plan

As Vora and I entered her home, the smell of fresh flowers hit me. Her house looked like it could be on MTV Cribs. The walls and ceilings were covered in brown and white marble. The kitchen was bigger than my whole house. Wow! I thought. Are you saying wow to the kitchen or wow to me? Fran said, walking from behind the counter and carrying a glass of milk. I was saying wow to you. No, you werent, you liar. How was I ever going to get away with anything having a girlfriend that reads minds? Youre never going to, she said, smiling seductively as she drank her milk. You truly are a cat, drinking all of that milk.

56

Naw, I just like milk. It has nothing to do with me being a shifter. She punched me on my arm. OK, everyone, lets all have a seat, Vora said, and we all found a seat at her big kitchen table. Heath is still out there, and I know he is going to come after Ale. Now, the best thing to do is go about our normal routine. Ale, you will continue school and graduate. Fran, Cherish, and Lacy, you guys will continue going to school, too. There is no way in hell I am going back there. I would have expected Fran to say that, but not Lacy. I hate that placeits boring, and the school work is too easy. And the guys are jerks. Lacy, youre not there to learn or date. Your there to make sure the Lukos do not fine Ale, but try and blend in and not act suspicious. Ale has one more semester to go. We need him to finish school like a normal human teenager for now. Ale, you will still feel like a normal human, until things start to change. I raised my hand, like I was in school. Umwhen will that be? I dont know yet. I dont know when the transformation process will take place, or what it will be like. In the mean time just be yourself, pretend nothing has changed. Except my sanity, I thought. You will get that back, Lacy said. Waitdo all of you read minds? The four of them look around at one another and then smiled like they were keeping a dirty little secret. Dang, I was outnumbered. OK, do we all understand? Vora continued. We all nodded our heads in agreement. Good. Now Ale needs to get back home before his mother thinks he is in jail

57

for killing Breaker. And the rest of us need to go over Operation Ale. I always wanted to say that. She chuckled to herself. It sucks that I have four women protecting me. I should be protecting them, I thought. Youre right, Lacy said as she got up to put her cup in the sink. Lacy, I made a promise to his father that I would keep him safe. You made a promise to his fathernot us. Lacy, lets talk in the other room. I was getting the feeling that I was not welcome anymore. Cherish hung her head and then got up to go into the living room. Fran and I looked at each other. Fran, take Ale home. We got up and headed for the door. I turned back toward Vora. Thank youfor everything. She winked at me, and said, Anything for you.

On the ride to my house, Fran and I were silent. I didnt have to tell her what was going on. She already knew what was in my head. You know, your thoughts are very interesting to me, she said, fidgeting with her fingers. Your perception of me is so pure, and innocent. I never would have thought Id fall for you, because I know who you are and what your kind is like. But your innocence of not knowing made me feel differently.

58

Im not sure how everything will pan out once you start shifting and your senses become stronger. Lukos have a thirst to defeat, kill, and conquer. Thats what they are about. She turned her head to look at me, with concern on her face. I didnt have to read her mind to know what she was thinking. She was worried that I would change and turn into one of them. But I couldnt see that happening. I felt something for her that was so deep I couldnt explain it. I grabbed her hand and rubbed it. Nothing will change. I guarantee I will never be like those punk Lukos. We finally made it to my house, and she put the car in park. But youre one of them. NoI am Alejandro, I said, as I grabbed her face. I looked deep into her eyes and pulled her head forward, gently pressing my lips upon hers. They were soft and cool. I felt her relax as we let our lips do the work. Whether I was human or Lukos, I knew who I was at that moment: a teenage boy with a hormonal imbalance who wanted to be with this girl every second and every minute of his life.

One Month Later

Francesca and I have been going out regularly now. She says its because she is trying to keep an eye on meshe didnt want to admit that we were in a relationship. Cherish and Lacy swallowed their pride and stayed in school until I finished. Fran didnt mind, because it meant we got to be together every day.
59

One day we got a call from Vora telling us to come to her house immediately. The urgency in her voice threw both Fran and I off. As we waited for Vora to come down the stairs, Fran and I sat close to each other at the dining room table. I watched her as she sipped the milk in her glass. Dang, that was so sexy to me. I could watch her drink milk all day. What a freak, Cherish said. You got a lot of nerve calling someone a freak, I said, throwing her words in her face. I was not the only freak at this table. We were all freaks, or weirdos, or whatever you want to call us. I think dog in a good word for you, Cherish replied. What is your problem with me? I just dont like your kind. OK, I know our kind have some type of bad history, but what is really your problem? You act like I did something to you. She hesitated and settled down in her seat. If I didnt know better, Id have thought she was crying. Dont mind Cherish. Sheis missing her family, Fran said as she looked at Cherish. Cherish looked at her and lifted the left side of her lip in a snarl. How was I ever going to get this girl to like me? I thought. I knew everyone was listening, but no one responded. Finally, Vora came downstairs. I have news from Purr Island. Heath has found more Lukos, and he is preparing them to come overseas. I dont know who they are, but we will be ready.
60

Wait, how we will know them when they come? I asked. Dumb dog, dont you know your own kind? Cherish responded. Shut up you stupid cat. Go cough up a hairball. That did it. Cherishs claws extended, and her mouth and body began to shift as she got on all fours. Odstoupen. Vora spoke in Czech, and Cherish quickly shifted back to human form. What did she say? I leaned over and asked Fran. Stand down. Its a command. If a leader speaks a command, the black cats have to obey, she said in a small whisper. Vora continued, answering my question. The Lukos has a distinctive scent. Fran and I are the only ones that can smell them, so Fran, you will have to be on special watch. We will have to do double shifts. I know this is hard, but we need to protect Ale till he is strong and mature to fight them off himself. Wow, thats somethinga Lukos fighting against its own kind. I would love to see that, Cherish said as she gave me an evil look. Especially, a Lukos fighting against his blood relative. What do you mean? I asked, confused. Cherish, stop! Fran said. Wait, no, Cherish keep going. What do you mean, a blood relative? Oh, you poor puppy. Heath, the one that is after you? He is your fathers brother. Which means He is my UNCLE!? Wow! This one is smart! Cherish laughed cruelly.
61

I was sick to my stomach. I was fighting against family I knew nothing about. Was I wrong to do this? Everything was coming at me too fast. I wished my father was here. I really needed him now The Lukos Trilogy Blood of a Wolf Coming Soon
