A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This is a lesson plan designed to teach 1st grade students basic economics. The students will learn the difference between a consumer and a producer by creating crafts and then buying each others crafts. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st grade Skill Level: Grade Level Grouping: Individual for creating crafts, partners for buying crafts. C. Materials: Construction paper, lined paper, yarn Classroom Coins (each student should have their own) Consumer and producer worksheet (found on last page) D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o E9.1.2 Identify a consumer. E9.1.3 Identify a producer.

Student-Friendly Standards I can explain what a consumer is. I can explain what a producer is.

E. Procedure: 1. Write the word producer and the word consumer on the board. Ask the students if any of them know how to pronounce the words. If nobody can, pronounce the words for the students and explain to them that a producer is somebody who makes things and that consumers are people who buy things. 2. Put out the art supplies. Explain to the students that they are going to need notebooks for the next lesson. Each student is going to make their own notebooks, that they are going to sell to one of their classmates. Explain that in this scenario, they are producers because they are manufacturing a good. 3. Demonstrate how to make the notebook. Allow the students to make their own notebook, coming around to the tables to help. 4. When the students have finished, they will be divided into partners. Each student will be advised to charge one quarter, one dime, one nickel, and one penny (in Classroom Coins) for their notebooks. They will then sell each other their notebooks. I will explain to them that when they buy something they are acting as consumers.

5. CLOSURE: Reiterate to the students that people who make things are producers, and people who buy things are consumers. Explain that, just as they were today, people can be both producers and consumers. Pass out worksheet. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will measure student understanding by having them complete a short worksheet for homework. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. If the students can accurately decide which person from the worksheet is a consumer and which person from the worksheet is a producer, they will understand the concepts. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest to teach will probably be the idea of a producer. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The hardest to teach might be the idea that somebody can be both a producer and a consumer. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will follow up this lesson by teaching the students the different ways in which people earn money (peoples different jobs). 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont grasp the concepts, I will review the ideas during the next lessons. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I might need to change the lesson by allowing the students more time to make the notebooks. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part was figuring out how to do the worksheet.
