Title of Unit: Early North America Title of Lesson: First People Submitted By: Tylor Striegel

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson plan is intended to teach 5th grade students about the people that settled in the eastern area of North America. We will use Houghton Mifflin Social Studies Textbook: United States History B. Target Population: Grade Level: 5th Skill Level: Grade Level Grouping: Whole class while reading, individual and group while completing assignments C. Materials: Textbook Writing utensils Lined paper Vocab and Study Guide (see last page) D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o H 1.5.1 Identify and describe Native North American life and cultural regions prior to European contact. H 1.5.2 Identify and describe the attributes of Native American nations in the local region and in North America

Student-Friendly Standards I can describe Native North American life and cultures that existed before Europeans made contact I can describe the what each Native American nation did that made them different

E. Procedure: 1. Discuss vocabulary and pronunciation. 2. Read the lesson together as a class, stopping to ask questions when appropriate. 3. After reading, discuss the questions in the Talk About It section on page 70 of the Teacher Edition 4. Have the students create a compare and contrast chart comparing and contrasting the Woodland Indians in the North and the ones in the South.

5. In groups, the students will complete numbers 5 and 6 in the Lesson Review section found on page 71 making sure to write down the answers and the supporting facts. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? To measure student understanding, I will have the students take home the Vocabulary and Study Guide found on page 22 of the Unit Resources. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. If the students can accurately fill out the Vocab and Study Guide, then they will understand how the Haudenosaunee lived. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? The easiest to teach will be the vocabulary. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging to teach will probably be the differences between the northern and southern people 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?. I will not follow up this lesson plan with the Extend Lesson 5 on pages 72 and 73. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? We will review the important parts of the lesson. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? None. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part was deciding how to follow up the lesson plan.
