Phil Jonas is looking forward to his European Senior Tour adventure

hil Jonas has always been something of a golfing globetrotter and the chance to set sail for a new adventure is what has him most excited about the journey he is about to begin on the European Senior Tour. By Jonass count, his pro golf career has taken him to more than 30 countries and the Surrey resident is delighted to have the opportunity to tick a few more off his list. Like Russia. When Jonas glanced at the tours schedule after earning one of six cards at qualifying school in Portugal in January, it was the Russian Open Golf Championship in Moscow and the season-ending MCB Tour Championship on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius that caught his eye. I am excited about going to see some places that I have never been before, Jonas says. I have always wanted to go to Russia. I am excited about that part. And Mauritius is another place I have always wanted to visit, adds Jonas, a native of South Africa who has called the Metro Vancouver area home for nearly 30 years. It is sort of the Hawaii for South Africa. Its where people go for their holidays. Of course, this is no holiday for Jonas, but he is determined to enjoy his senior golfing moment. He doesnt quite know what to expect, but feels good about his game. If I took stock of my game I think I have some of the ingredients that could be successful, he says. That is, I hit the ball a long way for an old guy and I have a good short game and I have a good imagination for the game. So I think those things are going to work in my favour. I just have to go play and see what happens. Jones has been a very good player for a long time. He was one of the worlds top-ranked junior players growing up in South Africa, played the PGA Tour for a short time after his collegiate golf career at Lamar University in Texas and has won on the Canadian, South African and South American tours. For the past several years he and North Vancouvers Bryn Parry have been dominating the local pro circuit. Jonas, who was named the PGA of BCs teacher of the year for 2012, runs a golf academy at Hazelmere in Surrey and also teaches at McCleery in Vancouver. He plans

to juggle his teaching with his new life on tour this year. Jonas figures hell be nervous when he tees it up in early June at the tours first event, the British PGA Seniors Championship in Cheshire, England, but he wont be scared. Jonas figures hell be able to draw upon a successful appearance at last summers Senior Open Championship at the famed Turnberry course in Scotland. I hope I am never as nervous again as I was playing in that thing, Jonas says. Nervousness isnt bad, but fear is and I was pretty scared. I had a lot of things working against me that week. I hadnt played in an event like that and my game wasnt good. Theres no doubt that having made the cut there helped my game improve and helped me get my card. I just felt if I could do it with all these things going against me, Im not too bad, you know. It was a big help. The tours schedule, which has not yet been completely finalized, is expected to include 12 to 15 events with purses ranging from about $400,000 to $2 million for the Open championship.

Jonas knows he wont get rich playing the tour, but if he plays well he has an opportunity to make some decent money. I think its going to be pretty expensive to travel, especially for me travelling back and forth, he says. The cheap thing is the tournament entry fee. Its only about $50 for each event. Jones is eligible to play in almost all the events, but will have to play his way into the Open Championship. Last summer, he used a onetime exemption earned for a win way back in 1990 on the South African Tour and tied for 55th at Turnberry. This could be a one-off thing and I think its only right that I go and play every event that I can, he says. So I expect to play in almost every event. He is going with the blessing of his wife, Patty, who is also a longtime golf pro and instructor, and their two children. Jones will be joined on tour by fellow Canadian Rick Gibson of Victoria, who is about to begin his second year on the European senior circuit. Actually, Rick helped convince me to go to Q-school, Jonas says. I was kind of humming and hawing about going and my daughter had a basketball game in Victoria and Rick was in Victoria and he came and watched. We were talking and I was saying I am thinking about going and he basically said, listen, you are not getting any younger. When you get to this age you just dont put it off. You cant afford to put it off. Jonas feels better about his game now than he did last summer when he headed overseas for Turnberry. He likes to think he plays some of his best golf when he is a long way from home in unfamiliar surroundings. His two wins in Peru would attest to that. I always remember the first year I won in Peru I was down there playing a practice round by myself and I was thinking, man, this is fantastic, golf is taking me to a place where Id never dreamt of going. My golf was good that week, but I think that feeling helped put me over the edge. Jonas hopes those same feelings follow him to some unfamiliar fairways on his new golf journey. Im excited about it, but well see how it goes, he says. Its kind of the unknown.

Predator Ridge tops Best of B.C. list

Ridge Course at Vernon resort selected as best public facility in province by panel

here probably is not just one single reason why Predator Ridge has succeeded while so many other mega golf resorts have failed in British Columbia. But great golf certainly has a lot to do with it. Yes, the scenery will take your breath away and the service is outstanding, but its the golf that keeps players coming back to the Vernon facility. The Vancouver Suns Best of B.C. golf panel certainly seems to love it. The 12 panelists selected Predators Ridge Course as their favourite public or resort course in the province. The Ridge Course at Predator is visually stunning, eminently playable, and just pure fun and that is what golf is all about in British Columbia, says panel member Kris Jonasson, executive director of British Columbia Golf. It combines the best of meadows, woodlands and mountain terrains with outstanding lake views to create a memorable day. The weather is generally exceptional and in my mind it is the must-play course in B.C. This is the second time we have compiled a panel to rate B.C.s best courses. In a 2009 survey, Predator finished second to Big Sky in Pemberton. This year, the two courses swapped places. Our 12 panelists were each asked to submit their own top 10 lists and through a points system a top 10 list of their lists was compiled. Predator received more firstplace votes (three) than any other course.

I chose Predator Ridge as my No. 1 because it offers the complete package: a gorgeous layout, great conditions, top service and expansive patios in one of the most beautiful regions of the province, says panelist Holly Horwood, a two-time B.C. Senior Womens champion. We try to play it every year with another couple when we visit the area. Memories of golf played there include thoughts of warmth, beautiful vistas and a crisp glass of Pinot Gris from Burrowing Owl afterwards. It doesnt get any better. Predator Ridge is No. 1 for me as it has a wide variety of interesting, yet very playable holes, says panelist Mike Carroll, a Vancouver lawyer who is serving a oneyear term as president of Golf Canada. The course is always in great condition and the level of service, quality of the food and beverage operations, and the practice facility are all first-class. Predator Ridge has been open since 1991 and, for most of those years, it was a 27-hole facility. But noted Canadian golf architect Doug Carrick was recently asked to design nine new holes and re-do one of the existing nines. His creation, the Ridge Course, has drawn rave reviews since officially opening in 2010. The Ridge Course is a perfect complement to the existing Predator Course, says Brad Pelletier, who runs the facility for the owner, Vancouver-based Wesbild Holdings Ltd. Very infrequently with a site that has significant elevation change are you able to deliver a

very playable golf course. I think that is what Doug Carrick has achieved with the Ridge Course. It offers that unique B.C. setting with an experience that isnt going to beat you up. Its going to make you feel good about your game, not demoralize you. While many other B.C. golf resorts with significant real estate components have struggled in recent times, Predator Ridge has continued to flourish. I always say that Predator Ridge has four unique things, Pelletier says. It has a great piece of property, it has a great brand, it has great people and it has always continued to innovate. So many facilities, at some point in their life cycle, run out of ideas and dont know where to go next. That has not happened at Predator. Under Pelletiers leadership, the facility has added former LPGA regular A.J. Eathorne to its instruction staff and hired former PGA Tour winner Dick Zokol as executive director, golf development. Predator also has become the summer home of Hockey Canada. Predator Ridge deserved them, Pelletier says. I truly believe we are the best in our category in the country. And we have committed to owning that segment. We have not discounted. Where others have diminished the brand equity that they have had, we have held firm to our pricing and quality and value and it has paid off. Last year, we had the strongest performance ever within our resort. While Predator topped this

years poll, Big Sky was a close second. Multiple PGA of BC player of the year winner Bryn Parry and Vancouver Golf Tour commissioner Fraser Mulholland both chose Big Sky as their top course in B.C. Big Sky is unparalleled in beauty, condition, shot quality and overall golf experience, says Parry. Each and every time I have played Big Sky it has impressed me and in a new way. Hitting shots from perfect fairways while looking at spectacular mountain scenery with hang gliders

overhead is British Columbias most unique and enjoyable public golf experience. The combination of an amazing practice facility, exceptionally manicured fairways and greens and a breathtaking view of the 8,000-foot Mount Currie all day makes Big Sky one of my all-time favourites, adds Mulholland. Tobiano, the Tom McBroom layout near Kamloops, also received two first-place votes from panelists Adam Hadwin and Doug Roxburgh. Besides the unreal views, the course is well manicured and as a player I love it because it is a demanding design, says Hadwin, a regular on the Web.com Tour. It may not be the best course for higher handicaps, but for the good player it presents an amazing experience. Eighteen signature holes, adds Roxburgh, a 13-time winner of the B.C. Amateur Championship. But make sure to choose the correct set of tees for your skill level. New entries into this years top 10 include Whistler Golf Club (No. 5), Swan-e-set Bay (No. 7), Rivershore (No. 8), Fairview Mountain (No. 9) and Morningstar (No. 10). British Columbia got short shrift from one of this countrys great golf course designers, but Stanley Thompsons lone West Coast creation has stood the test of time. Capilano Golf & Country Club has long been regarded as one of Canadas best courses and the scenic West Vancouver layout has been selected as this provinces top private course by our Best of B.C. panel. Stanley Thompson is one of the great designers and Cap has to be one of his best, says panel member Phil Jonas, a rookie on this years European Senior Tour. Its a course you wont ever get tired of playing. As a par 70, it is challenging and you must use every club in your bag. Absolutely the best, adds fellow

panelist Doug Roxburgh. Fantastic views, conditioning and shot challenge. Capilano received four first-place votes from our panelists to edge second-place finisher Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club. Panelists were asked to vote for their top three private courses and courses were awarded five points for firstplace votes, three points for second-place votes and a single point for third-place votes. Capilano finished with 24 points, while Shaughnessy garnered 19 points. Victoria Golf Club (18), Sagebrush (10) and Royal Colwood (8) rounded out the top five. Shaughnessy, which has played host to two recent Canadian Opens, actually received more total number of votes (seven) than any other course. It got a first-place vote from panelist Bryn Parry. I love the diversity of the course, Parry says. Small greens with a reasonable amount of slope, great conditions, the ability to play the course anywhere from par 70 to 73, huge trees to aim and hit around, and the views of the ocean on holes

nine through 12 make this B.C.s best. Panelists were not allowed to vote for courses they are affiliated with or are members of. That likely hurt Shaughnessy in the balloting as panelists Holly Horwood and Eugene Wong both play out of the Southwest Marine Drive layout. In addition to asking our panelists to give us their top public and private courses, we asked three other questions. Here are some highlights of their responses:

Question 1 If you had to

select a golf hole that best represents B.C. lets call it the provinces signature hole what would it be?

Not surprisingly, we got a variety of responses, but three panelists selected Victoria Golf Clubs seventh hole. This hole could be on the best piece of property in Western Canada, said panelist Kevin Carrigan, Canadas reigning Canadian Mid Amateur champion. Its just a coincidence it happens to be on a golf course. Its a tough downhill par 4 that never sees less than a 30-miles-per-hour head wind. The

hole is beautiful. Panelists Adam Hadwin and Eugene Wong both selected Furry Creeks dramatic par-3 14th hole that sits below the Sea to Sky Highway and hugs Howe Sound. I think this is a hole that really symbolizes B.C., says Wong, the North Vancouver resident who won twice during his rookie year on the Canadian Tour last summer. The green is a peninsula surrounded by water and the mountain backdrop is stunning. Panelist Anne Drewa, weekend anchor for Global BC, picked another Furry Creek hole, the par-4 first. When you tee off you are surrounded by an unobstructed view of the ocean and mountains, Drewa says. Its a reminder of why we live in B.C. ... even when it rains. Other holes receiving votes from our panelists included the 12th at Storey Creek, 17th at Nicklaus North in Whistler, No. 17 at Tower Ranch, the fifth hole at Victoria Golf Club, No. 11 at Golden and the fifth hole at the Ridge Course at Predator Ridge.

Getting fit for golf takes on a whole new meaning

University Golf Club is the place to go to get your TaylorMades tailor-made. TaylorMade is the latest club manufacturer to open a regional fitting centre in Metro Vancouver. Its located on the driving range at University Golf Club, where master fitter Andy Johnson stresses club-fitting is not just for low-handicappers. We encourage it for every skill level, says Johnson, an Australian native who played both the Australasian and Canadian tours. Some people think, oh, I am not good enough for a fitting. Absolutely you are. We want to get the best clubs in your hands. Its better for people just starting. I like to make sure there is no mystery behind it. I want to make sure a person understands why a particular club works for them and explain what different shafts can do and how it manages ball flight and gives people more

consistent results. Theres no mystery to it. We kind of hold their hand through the whole process. That process costs $150 for a full 90-minute fitting, which includes every club in the bag. A partial fitting or 45-minute session is $75. Clients simply hit balls off a driving range mat and a wireless hightech system called FlightScope monitors everything about your swing and delivers it to an iPad. Swing speed, carry distance, ball speed, smash factor, launch angle, ball trajectory, backspin rating, peak height ... it will basically tell you everything except what you ate for breakfast that morning. It will also show me how that person is delivering the golf club into the ball as well and what their tendencies are so I can build the right golf club for them, Johnson says. The goal is to fit players with clubs that will help them be more consistent. I feel a bit evil sometimes because I like to look at someones bad shots, Johnson says. That is what we want to manage. We want to improve the bad ones. We are

not going to eradicate them. We are not going to say we are going to turn your high slice into a nice straight draw. We are going to minimize the bad shots and control some of those ones that cause the double- and triple-bogeys. Johnson says some clients are surprised by the information produced from their fitting session. I had a lady come in recently and she generated above-average mens speed so I put her in mens clubs, he says. If she went into a store theyd say no, no you need a ladies club. And then I had a gentleman who needed something with a little more kick, light and soft, and we went into something ladies and it really helped his game. You can think outside the box with all the options and get the best possible option ... we do get a lot of ah-ha moments, people start hitting balls and go thats amazing. The TaylorMade facility at University includes the companys full 2013 product line, with all available shaft and head options. It is now open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to

4 p.m. and appointments can be made through the University pro shop. Some other major manufacturers also have regional fitting centres in the area.

Cleveland has a facility set up on the grass driving range at Hazelmere in Surrey. Titleists regional fitting centre is located at the driving range at Northview Golf Club in Surrey. Phil Jonas, a local teaching pro who is about to begin his first year on the European Senior Tour, is a big proponent of recreational players being fit for their clubs. I think its beneficial when you hit outdoors, says Jonas, who has a teaching academy at Hazelmere. Here at Hazelmere you can hit outdoors. Anything indoors is a waste of time as far as I am concerned because people swing differently indoors than they do outdoors. You want to be able to simulate what they are going to do on the course and the next best thing is being out on the range where they can sort of see fairway and fire at some flags. But fitting is important. If you are going to buy a set of clubs, you might as well buy the right set.

Two years ago, the RBC Canadian Open was held at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club and last summer the CN Canadian Womens Open drew large galleries to Vancouver Golf Club. This summer? Well, things arent quite as busy. There are no big-time pro events scheduled for Metro Vancouver. There are, however, a pair of amateur championships of note in B.C. The Pacific Coast Amateur, whose past champions include former PGA Tour winners Ben Crane and Billy Mayfair, returns to Capilano Golf & Country Club in West Vancouver, July 23-26. The Canadian Mens Amateur Championship goes Aug. 6-9 at Royal Colwood and Gorge Vale golf clubs in Victoria. In 2003, Abbotsfords James Lepp ran away from an impressive field at Capilano that included current PGA Tour members Ryan Moore and Spencer Levin to win the Pacific Coast Amateur. His 17-under total of 263 beat the field by 10 shots and included a course

record 62 in the second round. I remember getting off to a terrible start in my first round, being a few over par at one point, Lepp recalls. Then I holed out on 17 for an eagle Mackenzie to turn my round Hughes and tournament around. I remember it being wicked awesome, from the event itself, to the course, and obviously the way I played. The Pacific Coast Amateur has been held annually since 1967 and is always played on great golf courses. Recent sites include Bandon Dunes, Eugene Country Club, the Olympic Club, Seattle Golf Club and Royal Colwood. At this summers Canadian Amateur, Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., will attempt to win his third straight national amateur championship. The new PGA Tour Canada circuit makes the Times-Colonist-Island Savings Open its inaugural event June 6-9 at Uplands Golf Club in Victoria. PGA

Tour Canada took over the struggling Canadian Tour late last fall and has an eight-event schedule this summer. This provinces premier amateur tournament, the B.C. Amateur, goes July 9-12 in the East Kootenays. The 111th playing of the event will be contested at The Springs at Radium and Copper Point Golf Club. B.C. Golfs Kris Jonasson has long been a proponent of moving the B.C. Amateur around the province. Its called the British Columbia Amateur and that means we should be in all regions of the province, Jonasson says. Not necessarily on any type of set rotation, but certainly players in all areas and golf fans should have an opportunity to see the finest amateur players in the province play. Albertas Riley Fleming won last years B.C. Amateur at Swan-e-set Bay in Pitt Meadows. The B.C. Womens Amateur Championship, which was won last year by Richmonds Christine Wong at Christina Lake Golf Club, goes June 25-28 at Pitt Meadows Golf Club.

Wailea a special place

Youve got to club yourself right, know your distances and factor in elevation changes on the course, Hathaway advises. But at the same time, the course gives you some options, and thats one reason its so much fun to play. In contrast to the Golds rugged character, Wailea Emerald is softened around the edges, characterized by lush landscaping and tropical blossoms that fill the air with delicious fragrances. Trent Jones Jr. designed the par-72, 6,825-yard course to be fun for all players, and Golf for Women magazine consistently ranks it as one of the most women-friendly clubs in the United States. Their preservation during course construction earned the recognition of the Maui Historical Society, and added yet another unique element to stamp into my global golf passport.

I am a keen, keen person on exercise, thats right up my alley and I really feel like the fact I walk every course has helped me. I have walked a lot of courses all over B.C. and Alberta. No matter how mountainous they are I walk them. The belief of Bobinski and Marshall that golf is good for their health seems to be backed up in scientific fact. An exhaustive 2008 study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science found the death rate for golfers in Sweden was 40 per cent lower than for other people of the same sex, age and socioeconomic status. The study suggested that corresponds to a five-year increase in life expectancy. The Swedish studys authors also concluded that in addition to its physical benefits, there are also positive social and psychological aspects to the game that can be of help. Marshall and Bobinski both stressed that the social aspect of the game is one that is important to them. Golf is a marvellous game, I just

wish the hell I had started when I was a kid, says Marshall, who was in his 40s when he began playing. But I grew up in the Depression and was one of five boys and golf was a long way away in our world. I think its a marvellous game. Not only is it a great game for your physical health, I think its great for your mental health, too. And I love the camaraderie that is a big part of the game.

British Columbia Golf, the governing body of amateur golf in the province, is attempting to emphasize the health benefits of playing golf. A golfer carrying his or her clubs for 18 holes will typically walk about 10,000 steps and burn about 2,000 calories. I think that is a key message that we are trying to get out there, says Kris Jonasson, executive director of British Columbia Golf. Everybody that is in the sport world today recognizes that we have an issue with obesity at the kids level and also at the adult level. We know the health benefits

of regular exercise and there has been all sorts of documentation that talks about the life expectancy of golfers compared to the rest of the population being much higher. I just think that is a message that we need to get out there because golf is a sport that has some high participation rates and we should be talking about the benefits of the game outside of just enjoying playing. Jonasson is speaking from experience. The longtime Richmond Country Club member credits golf with helping to improve his health. Absolutely, it has benefited me, Jonasson says. I at one time walked with two canes because I had multiple sclerosis. If it hadnt been for the fact that I wanted to get back out and continue to play golf Im not sure today I would walk as well as I do.

How putter is held turns into body politics

Proposed ban on anchoring develops into heated debate

There is a certain irony that should not be lost within what arguably has been one of the greatest debates about the game of golf in this decade. The sport has not yet completely been able to apply the brakes on a variety of other issues, things such as pace of play, club heads that are the size of footballs and balls screeching aloft like asteroids above Russia. Yet what has the games gatekeepers most obsessed is a few inches of extra length on a belly putter, and more specifically what the long flatstick is apparently doing to fundamentally alter growth. To the governing U.S. Golf Association and Royal & Ancient Golf Club, evil lurks not within the length of the putter but in anchoring. The two clubs last year proposed a rule outlawing

any stroke in which a club comes in contact with the body that remains the talk of the sport. The art of putting, as described by the USGA, should be simply a matter of holding a club with two hands and making a free swing away from the body, which is about how it has been done for the last six centuries. Rule 14-1B would have a three-year grace period, but would go into effect Jan. 1, 2016. If youve been putting broomstick-style, with the putter buried in the chest, or the belly-putter, anchored in well, take a guess, youre suddenly out of luck. Anchors away. Golf Canada went along with the proposal when it was announced last year. The recent trend in stabilizing the club by anchoring it to the body goes against the principles and traditions inherent with the sport, Dean Ryan, Rules of Golf chair, wrote on Golf Canadas website.

But the proposed change was met with steady criticism that at one point threatened to drive a wedge between the two major governing bodies and the games best touring pros. PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem announced in February his groups opposition to the rule change. That briefly set up the possibility of having a two-tiered set of rules, one for the pros and another for everyone else. It only got worse when the European Tour elected to stick with the USGA and the R&A. Call it the golf equivalent of the designated hitter. The amount of anchoring is relatively low, and formed a debate which suggested if the procedure was so good it would be utilized by every golfer. work to be good at this. Very few people are good at something for no reason. Ill go to the range once or twice a week in the off-season, and usually play once a week. Theres a mental side to football and definitely one in golf. Any similarities? Theres a more intense mental focus in football. I dont know if thats because its my major passion or that is what the game requires. Golf is me battling myself. Theres only so much going on between you and the ball during that swing. You dont want to over-think and yet you need to think. Theres going to be bad shots and you have to overcome that mentally. You can choose to let one bad hole break you, or you say youve had one bad hole, there are 17 others. Theres got to be some conditioning benefits to golf for a football player? The one thing I noticed is for golf you have to have a fair degree of rotational flexibility. I noticed I was lacking a bit of that when I first started. Ive always stretched a lot for football but you have to stretch differently for golf.

t may not seem as if a player could have a better year than the rise to prominence B.C. Lions linebacker ADAM BIGHILL had last season until you learn what hes done off the field lately. Not only did the 24-year-old catch the golf bug while becoming a CFL all-star last season, he also was recently engaged to former Eastern Washington and Oregon State golfer Kristina Gargaro of Port Moody and thus wont have to ask twice about fitting in a round between his robust training schedule. Bighill talked to The Provinces LOWELL ULLRICH about the positive changes and where golf fits in his lifestyle:

Guys on the team kept going out to play last year and I just figured at first Ill tag along. I was awful. Then I met my fiance. It was a fun thing to do while we were dating. I kept asking myself why I did things wrong and she pretty much had all the answers. From

Youve got to allow your hips to open up. Being more flexible for golf is always going to translate to being a better athlete. And theres undoubtedly no harm in using the yoga you do for football and apply it to golf? If youre not going to dedicate time to the gym or running, you need to do yoga. Itll keep you young. So youre hooked? No more snowboarding and rock climbing, which is how you kept in shape for football before discovering golf? This is the new hobby. Have you played long enough to have a favourite course yet? What course are you looking forward to playing? I seem to be spending a lot of time at Meadow Gardens, Surrey and Guildford. Ive really wanted to play Tobiano and the Whistler courses. Any other notable experiences so far? We went to the Phoenix Open this year and spent

some time around the 16th hole. That was intense. The 16th hole is just a big party. Its hard to think how many people you can fit on a golf course until you see it for yourself. Who is the best golfer on the Lions? It would have been Geroy Simon. Paul McCallum will try to make a case. Mike Reilly would have tried to make a case but hes gone (to Edmonton), too. So Im going to throw my hat in there now. Whats in your bag? For a fairway wood I have a TaylorMade Rocketballz. I have a Cobra Amp driver and for irons its the TaylorMade Burner 2.0. And as for balls, Im playing the TaylorMade Penta, partly because for Christmas my grandpa got me some customized balls that say Bighill 44; for anybody who found my lost balls thatll be a gift for them.
