Essay (502 words) The Appropriate Care for Schizophrenia Sufferer

World Health Organization found that schizophrenia affects about 24 million people worldwide and more than 50% people with schizophrenia are not receiving appropriate care yet. This case need to be spoken in order to make people understand how are people with schizophrenia and how to give appropriate care of, so that it will decrease the percentage of schizophrenia sufferer who doesnt receive appropriate care. There are two kinds of schizophrenia treatment, those are psychotherapy and medications. Before we know more about the treatment of schizophrenia, first thing that is notable to understand is the definition of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, debilitating mental illness that affects the sufferer and can lead to physical and personality changes that tend to be the negative ones. Based on some researches, there is no main cause of schizophrenia but schizophrenia is triggered by genetic, environmental factors and abnormal brain structure. People with schizophrenia experience delusion, hallucination, disorganized speech and behavior. Therefore, people with schizophrenia need appropriate treatment to eliminate the symptoms. Schizophrenia sufferer would get psychotherapy which provides advice, reassurance, education, modeling, limit setting, and reality testing with the therapist. This therapy helps maintaining the sufferer on their medication, learning needed social skills, and supporting the person's weekly goals and activities in their community. However, psychotherapy cannot substitute the medication therapy. They must be undergone together and cannot be separated. The medical management of schizophrenia involves a combination of antipsychotic, antidepressant, and anti-anxiety medication. The problem of this case, people with schizophrenia often stop taking the medication because the medication didnt make them better or they had intolerable side-effects. Some side effects which appear from antipsychotic medications are dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, drowsiness and dizziness. These symptoms are able to develop to be more serious symptoms, such as having trouble with muscle control, muscle spasms or cramps in the head and neck, fidgeting or pacing, tremors and shuffling of the feet.

The treatments for people with schizophrenia consist of psychotherapy and medications treatment. Both of them cannot be separated and must be undergone together. Actually, these treatments are possible to do by their family and health professional. Therefore its valuable to conduct an education for people, especially the family of schizophrenias sufferer. Health care professional, family, and the sufferer must been involved in the process of treatment and complement each other. Health care professional may handle responsible to teach the family how to treat the sufferer properly and how to modify the proper environment for sufferer, whilst the family must care, patience, and do the advices of health care professional. If all of them already have been involved, the amount of schizophrenia sufferer who doesnt receive appropriate care will be reduced.
