NYC Favorite: Impossible to choose! Favorite Festival: Laneway Festival in Australia. On Repeat: Tove Lo, St Lucia and Haim. Travel Essential: Sweatpants. Gov Ball basics: your starting point for navigating the festival like a pro.
In less than three years, Governors Ball has managed to cement itself as New York Citys premier music festival. Its 2011 debut on Governors Island lent Gov Ball its name, but it was the following installment on Randalls Island where the festival truly shined. 2012s two-day event showed that a crowd can be moved as much by surging guitars and strategic crescendos as by computerized beats and equalizer teaks. For 2013, Governors Ball stays true to its previous editions, if not in original location, in its diverse, yet well-curated, lineup. Expect the same fun in the sun as in 2011 and 2012, but with an extra stage, an extra day, and extra artists. This years motto should be go big or go home and yours should match. Laura Baker-Finch

means theyve done away with paper schedules and maps, so if you want to know whats going on at the festival, the mobile app, available for iPhone and Android platforms, is absolutely essential to navigating the festival. For our review, we broke down the app into four sections Lineup & Schedule, Eat & Drink, News & Social, and Gov Ball Cam - to help you navigate the ins and outs of Randalls Island. We also listed some helpful features that will be rolled out in the coming weeks. Read on for tips on how to best utilize the apps features both before and during the festival. Pre-festival, create your own custom schedule to ensure your favorite artists sets dont overlap, and while youre at Gov Ball, review (and tweet at) your favorite food and beverage vendors, or share Gov Ball official polaroid-style photos via your social networks. Be sure to check the app regularly for updates, as the Festival Map, Eventbrite Mobile Ticketing, Festival Essentials, and Attractions will be added closer to the festival date.

installment of Gov Ball, and as the festival tries to show the world that, yes, a three-day outdoor summer music festival in NYC is very much a sustainable business model, mindful attendees are already planning daily itineraries, weighing after party options, and ironing out any remaining logistical perturbances. While the festival wont overwhelm you with a bill that lists half its acts in size eight font or force you into too many life-or-death set conflicts (only two bands on at a time!), this years lineup is a bold leap forward from last years svelte two-day offering. Its grown both vertically and horizontally, landing a handful of high-profile artists to hold down headlining slots while also expanding the heft of its diverse daytime offerings. This Spotify playlist is the last piece of your Gov Ball pregame. Listen to it, learn it, love it. Sequenced to match the festivals daily schedule, its a chronological taste of things to come.

Williamsburg + Greenpoint
The new generation taking flight in Brooklyns Williamsburg and Greenpoint has instilled a laidback vibe to the borough, fostering a distinct nightlife scene and a music community of indie labels, venues, musicians, and fans. In Williamsburg, music venues, cocktail lounges, beer gardens, dive bars, and restaurants line Bedford Avenue and its side streets. To the north, Greenpoint may be less dense, but the neighborhood holds its own with standout bars and eateries lining Manhattan Avenue, just north of McCarren Park. Hop on the Gov Ball shuttle right outside Brooklyn Bowl in North Williamsburg for the best route to the festival from Brooklyn.
