National Public Gardens Day at Boerner Botanical Gardens

Boerner Botanical Gardens will celebrate National Public Gardens Day with garden walks and information tables amid the plant collections, Friday, May 10, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. National Public Gardens Day, promoted by the American Public Gardens Association, Rain Bird Corporation, and Better Homes and Gardens magazine, highlights programs such as plant and water conservation and the preservation of public green spaces. Horticultural staff of the Boerner Botanical Gardens will lead tours at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. Each 45minute tour will visit all the major garden spaces, with more time devoted to the horticulturists area of specialization. Areas of focus are: the Herb Garden, Rose Garden, and Juniper Collection; the Perennial Garden, Peony Garden, and gardens adjacent to the Education and Visitor Center; the Rain-Harvesting System, Shrub Mall, and Rock Garden; and the Trial Garden. Members of area gardening and educational organizations will also be on hand to provide information and answer questions. Information tables manned by various plant societies will be located near the appropriate plant collection. Choosing the best wood for your home project

By Andrew McGlothlen So you've planned out your home improvement project and are headed to the lumberyard. You know just what you need, or do you? While a grocery list of lumber may be perfectly acceptable for some projects, other high-profile projects may require some higher-quality wood. When walking into a lumberyard, it helps to know just how to find the "good" wood. The first test is one that you should do no matter what project you're working on. This is the test in which you "sight" the board. Sighting the board consists of looking down the length of the board at one end to try to discern any visible bend or twist in the board. You should also look for knotholes, dark circles in the wood. During cutting, these can cause big problems as they are harder than the rest of the wood. Also look for cracks and wane, untrimmed wood along the sides of the board. This test should help you discern any visible warps or problems with the cut or quality of the wood itself. After the sight test, you should consider the grade of the lumber. Grading is dependent on the type of wood. Hardwoods and softwoods each have a different grading system. Generally speaking, hardwoods are defined as deciduous trees that lose leaves in the fall, and softwoods are coniferous trees with needles in place of leaves. For hardwoods, there are four grades of lumber. The best in appearance is FAS, which stands for "first and seconds." These boards must be at least 6"x8' and have 83% or greater usable material on one face. Keep in mind that "usable material" is an average of the entire board. There may be one section that makes up much of the 17% of defect or that 17% may be spread throughout the board. Select (Sel) has the same quality as FAS, but the board only has to be 4"x6'. After Select and FAS are #1 and #2 Common (#1 Com and #2 Com). Each of these boards must be at least 3"x4'. #1 Com must have at least 66% usable material, and #2 Com must have at least 50%. Softwood uses a similar but slightly different scale. Given that softwood is often used for trim and decorative purposes, softwood has a five grade scale. The finest softwood is C Select, which is almost entirely clear of defects. This is followed by D Select, which has a bit of toleration for small knots but retains a very fine appearance. After the Selects come the Commons, numbered one through three. These are rated by the size of their knots. The smallest knots are in 1 Common and the largest in 3 Common. Now, when you get to the lumberyard with this grading scale, how can you tell what you're looking at? The lumber industry has made this easy for you. At the end of each board should be a stamp. At the top left should be a symbol representing the number or symbol of the mill at which the board was produced. Below that should be a symbol of the grading organization that examined the board. At the top should be an abbreviation of the grade of wood (i.e., CSEL). Below that should be stamps describing the moisture content of the wood and the type of wood you

Mount Mary College hosts Gospel Choir Jamboree

Mount Mary College will host The Reason Why We Sing, its Centennial gospel music concert on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 7 p.m. The concert will include performances by Gospel Choirs from Mount Mary College, Marquette University, Carthage College, and Messmer High School. Dear Donna, without seeing you I cannot comment on what your other doctor has told you. You may have deficient bone height or width that would make it more expensive to place an implant but that doesn't make the implant impossible. Partial dentures put pressure on the adjacent teeth so I try to always help people to choose a fixed option versus a removable partial denture option. Nobody enjoys taking their teeth out at night before they go to sleep. Some dentists offer Maryland or Virginia bridges, which have small wings that are cemented to the adjacent teeth. While these may be an option they can become uncemented more easily than a traditional bridge so they are not used with as much frequency as a traditional bridge. Capuchins Run Walk for the Hungry July 25

The Capuchins Run Walk for the Hungry to German Fest has once again been named the charity for the German Fest 5K run and 2Mile walk, to be held July 25, 7 p.m., at the lakefront. This is the 8th year for the event whose proceeds are shared by the Capuchin ministries, St. Bens Community Meal and House of Peace, in order to feed the hungry. "This is an important event for Milwaukees hungry," Capuchin Friar Brother Dave Schwab explains. "Not only do 100% of the events proceeds go to feeding those who are without, but Usingers Sausage has once again donated one pound of product for every runner and walker. Our goal this year is 3,000 participants. That adds up to a lot of food!" For 42 years, St. Bens Community Meal has provided nourishment and counsel to over 2,000 individuals every week, six days a week. Over 75 civic and church groups throughout the Metro Milwaukee area provide and serve the meals. St. Bens also provides preventionfocused health care through its clinic, a partner with Columbia St. Mary's. Since 1968, the House of Peace has been serving Milwaukees central city. It provides food, clothing, and pastoral care to the poor plus houses a medical clinic and legal clinic that serves the same population. St. Bens Community Meal and House of Peace are Capuchin ministries and are part of the Province of St. Joseph of the Capuchin Order, which is headquartered in Detroit, and serves Capuchin ministries worldwide. Businesses, organizations, and companies are encouraged to organize a team of 10 or more. Teams will have their team name printed on their T-Shirts if registered by July 8. A team captains' meeting will take place May 9, 8:30a.m., at St. Ben's Community Meal, 924 W. State Street. Team recruitment tips and tools will be shared plus a continental breakfast with the events emcee, Bill Michaels, the "Big Unit." Each team member will receive a discount registration plus entrance into German Fest, a $5 German Fest food and drink gift coupon, and a 2-for-1 return coupon to German Fest. Chips will be used to time and score the 5K run participants. A separate 2 mile walk route through Lakeshore State Park will be timed, but not scored. Pre-event festivities and award presentations/drawings will take place at the US Cellular Stage. Overall trophies and age category medals will be presented for runners. The Common Ground Healthcare Cooperative is sponsoring a series of seminars to explain the health insurance reform coming in 2014. The seminars are designed for individuals without insurance, self-employed individuals, small business owners and non-profit leaders. Common Ground is a group of nonpartisan, proactive, everyday citizens in Southeastern Wisconsin, dedicated to identifying pressing social problems facing our community and bringing about creative solutions. Common Grounds strength is in the commitment of more than 40 congregations, neighborhood groups, nonprofits, schools, small businesses and unions to take action on regional issues.
