Holy Eucharist

12 May 2013 The Sunday after Ascension Day 10.30 am

Welcome to St Philips

From 10.20 am the altar party will be observing a time of silence and prayer in the vestry. We encourage you to spend this time preparing quietly for the service.

THE GATHERING Stand Hail the day that sees him rise Charles Wesley (1707-88) & Thomas Cotterill (1779-1823) NEH 130 omit v.v2 & 4 Hail the day that sees him rise Alleluya! Glorious to his native skies; Alleluya! Christ, awhile to mortals given, Alleluya! Enters now the highest heaven! Alleluya! See! the heaven its Lord receives, Alleluya! Yet he loves the earth he leaves: Alleluya! Though returning to his throne, Alleluya! Still he calls mankind his own. Alleluya! Still for us he intercedes; Alleluya! His prevailing death he pleads; Alleluya! Near himself prepares our place, Alleluya! Harbinger of human race. Alleluya! Lord, though parted from our sight, Alleluya! Far above yon azure height, Alleluya! Grant our hearts may thither rise, Alleluya! Seeking thee beyond the skies. Alleluya! There we shall with thee remain, Alleluya! Partners of thine endless reign; Alleluya! There thy face unclouded see, Alleluya! Find our heaven of heavens in thee. Alleluya!

All

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers of Penitence Sit or kneel Christ has gone up on high, leading captivity captive and bringing gifts for men. As we prepare ourselves to meet him here in the courts of heaven let us call to mind our many failures and sins. Lord Jesus, you suffered a cruel death on the cross for our redemption yet we have forgotten your pain and stayed in the realm of the evil you defeated. All Lord have mercy Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you were raised from death to bring us new life, yet we have preferred the comfort of the familiar, and the empty promises of a sinful world. All Christ have mercy Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you have ascended to your Father and our Father, your God and our God; plead there at the right hand of God for our forgiveness and entry into the fullness of his presence. All Lord have mercy Lord, have mercy.

All Stand All

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria in excelsis Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect The presiding priest introduces a time of silent prayer. Risen, ascended Lord, as we rejoice at your triumph, fill your Church on earth with power and compassion, that all who are estranged by sin may find forgiveness and know your peace, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Sit Reading Ephisians 4.7-16 Each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christs gift. Therefore it is said, When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people. (When it says, He ascended, what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.
7

We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by peoples trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knitted together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the bodys growth in building itself up in love. All Stand All This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Servant Song Richard Gillard (b. 1953) Brother, sister, let me serve you Let me be as Christ to you. Pray that I might have the grace To let you be my servant, too. We are pilgrims on a journey. We are travellers on the road. We are here to help each other Walk the mile and bear the load. I will hold the Christ-light for you In the night time of your fear. I will hold my hand out to you; Speak the peace you long to hear. I will weep when you are weeping. When you laugh, I'll laugh with you. I will share your joy and sorrow Till we've seen this journey through.
8

When we sing to God in heaven, We shall find such harmony Born of all we've known together Of Christ's love and agony. Brother, sister, let me serve you Let me be as Christ to you. Pray that I might have the grace To let you be my servant, too. The Gospel Luke 24.44-end Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Glory to you, O Lord. Then Jesus said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with youthat everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.

All

Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God. All Sit We keep silence. Stand The Creed Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

This is the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ. Address Swenja Surminska

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Kneel or sit Prayers of Intercession In the power of the Spirit and in union with Christ let us pray to the Father.

Lord God, your love has called us here As we, by love, for love were made, Your living likeness still we bear, Though marred, dishonoured, disobeyed; We come, with all our heart and mind, Your call to hear, your love to find. We come with self-inflicted pains Of broken trust and chosen wrong, Half-free, half-bound by inner chains, By social forces swept along, By powers and systems close confined,
13

Yet seeking hope for humankind. Lord God, in Christ you call our name, And then receive us as your own, Not through some merit, right or claim, But by your gracious love alone; We strain to glimpse your mercy-seat, And find you kneeling at our feet. Then take the towel, and break the bread, And humble us, and call us friends; Suffer and serve till all are fed, And show how grandly love intends To work till all creation sings, To fill all worlds, to crown all things. Lord God, in Christ you set us free Your life to live, your joy to share; Give us your Spirit's liberty To turn from guilt and dull despair And offer all that faith can do, While love is making all things new. Preparation of the Table Taking of the Bread and Wine Blessed be God, By whose grace creation is renewed, By whose love heaven is opened, By whose mercy we offer our sacrifice of praise. Blessed be God for ever.

The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed right and good, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ the King of glory. Born of a woman, he came to the rescue of our human race. Dying for us, he trampled death and conquered sin. By the glory of his resurrection He opened the way to life eternal and by his ascension, gave us the sure hope that where he is we may also be. Therefore the universe resounds with Easter joy and with choirs of angels we sing for ever to your praise.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Accept our praises, heavenly Father, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, and as we follow his example and obey his command, grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us his body and his blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks: he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks: he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

16

Therefore, heavenly Father, we remember his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross; we proclaim his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cup we make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord. All Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died Christ is risen Christ will come again. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy gifts in the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your love and unite us in the body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: All Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

17

The Lords Prayer Kneel or sit Looking for the coming of his kingdom, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray. All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread Jesus says, I am the bread of life whoever eats this bread will live for ever. Lord, our hearts hunger for you; give us this bread always.
