Speakers Biodata Graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) from University of Malaya in 1980, Ir. Soon See Leak is currently the Managing Director of one of the Elevator Engineering company. A registered Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia, Ir. Soon has extensive experience in the design and planning of vertical transportation requirements in various types of buildings including commercial and residential complexes. He is currently a member of the Working Group for Lifts and Escalators in SIRIM which is responsible for the drafting of the latest Malaysian Standards and was actively involved in the drafting of MS 2021: Safety Rules for the Construction and Installation of Electric Lifts which was adopted by the Department of Standards Malaysia in 2006. Ir. Soon is also the current President of the Malaysian Lift and Escalator Association (MALEA) and a member of Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM). Ir. Soon is also a Certified Professional Trainer and a member of IPMA (UK). Ir. Soon is also the author of the book, BUILD THE BRIDGE FIRST, an Inspiring Story on How to Build Great Relationships with Co-workers & Customers and Lead Your Team in Ways You Never Thought Possible.

Vertical Transportation in Buildings A Practical Approach to understanding the Design and Maintenance of Lifts and Escalators
For building owners and end users alike the three basic requirements of any vertical transportation system in a building are safety, reliability and efficiency in moving people and goods within the building. To achieve this, one must understand the concept of good elevator/ escalator design, the essence of proper installation and maintenance and obligations of legal and statutory requirements in terms of complying with the latest regulations and by-laws. Understanding proper elevator design approach ensures adequacy of service while achieving a high level of space utility in a building. Ensuring a proper installation is critical to efficient performance of system and impacts of the reliability of the equipment in operation. Adopting a proper maintenance programme will ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Vertical Transportation System. Introduction This one day course will enable participants to appreciate and better understand the concept of vertical transportation system, particularly the various types of elevators and escalators. Participants will have an opportunity to understand Lift Traffic Analysis and elevator planning and design, the key considerations in monitoring installation works and know what are the current codes and regulations as well as the legal obligations as Owners and Consultants. Finally, participants will learn about the various serious consequences of improper use and care of elevator and escalator equipment and how to minimize such risks.
