Variable Speed Scroll Compressors - Questions and Answers Webinar Date - June 12th, 2012 1.

Since the water-cooled version of the compressor is distinct from the air-cooled version, does AAON have an efficiency advantage over other scroll manufacturers? Does this come into play with evaporative-cooled condensers? a. Currently only the air-cooled version of the variable speed scroll compressor is used in AAON equipment. 2. Is a 208V or 230V compressor available? a. Yes. The 460V and 575V RN Series units compressors were discussed in more detail because of the feature of being able to operate from 35-75 Hz. 3. You said we cant run the compressor if the VFD fails, because of the voltage issue (on 460V and 575V units). Can we replace the VFD or does the entire compressor need to be replaced? a. The specific issue with the compressor or VFD will need to be determined, to determine which needs to be replaced. The compressor and VFD can be replaced independently. 4. What other manufacturers in the US are using the Bitzer VFD controlled variable speed scroll compressor? a. Currently AAON is the only North American manufacturer using the Bitzer VFD controlled variable speed scroll compressors. 5. What is the minimum speed for each compressor? Does it vary per compressor size? a. The minimum speed for any VFD controlled variable speed scroll compressor is 35 Hz, regardless of compressor size or voltage. 6. What is the warranty on the compressor and VFD? a. The standard AAON compressor warranties apply to the VFD controlled variable speed scroll compressors: standard 5 year for packaged rooftop units and optional 5 year for chillers. The VFDs are covered under the standard 1 year parts warranty. 7. Are we limited to a specific manufacturer on the VFD? Is AAON or Yaskawa providing a special VFD for this application? If so, what is special about it? a. Yes, all VFD controlled variable speed scroll compressors will be factory provided with Yaskawa Z1000 VFD drives. This is not a special VFD, however, there are custom sequences of operation in the VFD programming and the unit controller. This is why factory provided controls are currently required with all VFD controlled variable speed scroll compressor AAON systems.

8. Is the performance shown on the rating sheet for compressors running at 60 Hz or 75Hz? a. This depends on the size and voltage of the compressors and system. The Ecat32 compressor performance is at the full load, 100% capacity rating point. For example a 55 ton 230V unit with VFD controlled variable speed compressors will be rated at 60 Hz, while a 55 ton 460V unit with VFD controlled variable speed compressors will be rated at 75 Hz. See the General Data section of the RN/RQ Engineering Catalog for the compressor VFD range (Hz) of each unit, at each voltage. 9. How are the VFDs sized to the compressor? Based on Amps at 60Hz? a. The VFDs are sized based on the maximum operating Amps of the compressor. It is sized for full load operation. 10. What is the decibel range of the compressors? a. The Bitzer scroll compressor tends to be in the mid to low 80 dB range @ 60 Hz. This will increase as the compressor is over sped to 75 Hz, however, not objectionably loud. Note: With AAON packaged rooftop unit and chiller equipment the compressors are housed within the rigid polyurethane foam injected control cabinet. 11. What is the lowest ambient air temperature for operation as an air-source heat pump? a. In Ecat32 the lowest ambient air temperature for operation in air-source heat pump heating mode is 0F. Ecat32 also checks to confirm the compressor is operating within its compressor operating envelope for a given model of compressor. 12. Why did AAON decide to use the VFD controlled variable speed scroll compressors, instead of the Digital Scroll compressors on the 55-140 ton RN Series E cabinet? a. In the smaller product the Digital Scroll compressor is available for modulating capacity control. The Digital Scroll compressor is not currently available in the larger compressor sizes used on the E cabinet. The VFD controlled variable speed scroll compressor also provides the additional features and benefits described in the presentation. 13. Will IPLV be incorporated in Ecat32 for VFD controlled variable speed scroll compressors? a. For chillers and packaged rooftop units, currently an EER efficiency value is provided. In the next few weeks an Ecat32 update will include chiller IPLV, and packaged rooftop unit IEER information.

14. How long has Bitzer been making the variable speed scroll compressor? How many are in operation? a. Bitzer released all variable speed scroll compressor models for sale in mid 2011. As AAON has just begun selling and shipping units with this feature there are only a few AAON RN/RL/LL Series units currently in operation. A job with multiple fully custom 120 ton AAON packaged rooftop units with VFD controlled variable speed scroll compressors (30 total variable speed compressors), has been in operation since early 2011.
