DEGREES OF COMPARISON

There are two kinds of degrees of Comparison : 1. Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives. 2. Degrees of Comparison of Adverbs. A. Positive degree: as............as For example : The data : Student A gets 10 at his Maths test. Student B gets 10 at his Maths test. 1.= Student A is as smart as student B. = Adjective = Student A is as clever as student B. = Adjective = Student A is as excellent as student B. = Adjective 2.= Student A always studies as hard as student B. = Adverb. = Student A always studies as diligently as student B. = Adverb. B. Comparative degrees : 1. Short comparative : Adjective + er + than Adverb + er + than 2. Long comparative : More + adjective + than More + adverb + than For Examples :

Student A gets 10 at his Physics test. Student B gets 9 at his Physics test. Student C gets 9 at his Physics test. Student D gets 8 at his Physics test. Adjectives and Adverbs: 1. Student A is smarter / cleverer than Student B,C and D. 2. Student A is more diligent / more excellent than Student B,C and D. 3. Student B and C are smarter/ cleverer than student D. 4. Student B and C are more diligent/ more excellent than student D. 5. Student D is more stupid than student A,B,and C. 6. Student D is lazier than student A,B,and C. 7. Student B and C are more stupid than student A. 8. Student B and C are lazier than student A

C. Superlative degrees. 1. Short Superlative degree : The + short adjective + est The + short adverb + est. 2. Long Superlative degree : The + most + long adjective. The + most + long adverb For Examples : Student A gets 10 at his Physics test. Student B gets 9 at his Physics test.

Student C gets 9 at his Physics test. Student D gets 8 at his Physics test. 1.Student A is the smartest / cleverest student of all. 2.Student A is the most diligent of all. 3.Student A is the most excellent of all. 4. Student D is the most stupid of all. 5. Student D is the laziest of all.

Another Example : 1.Student A is 16 years old. Student B is 17 years old. Student C is 17 years old. Student D is 18 years old. = Student B is as young as Student C. = Student B is as old as Student C. = Student B is the same age as Student C.

2.Student As hobby is reading a book. Student Bs hobby is shopping. = Student As hobby is different from student B. = Student As ADDITION : There are 2 types of the comparative degree of quantity. 1. Showing similarities : as many + countable noun + as as much + uncountable noun + as hobby and Student Bs hobby are different.

For Examples :

a). I have collected ten postcards and so has Adinda. = I have collected ten postcards and Adinda has too. = I have collected ten postcards. Adinda has collected ten postcards. = I have collected as many postcards as Adinda has. b). Yenny gets fifty thousands from her father and so does Kirani. = Yenny gets fifty thousands from her father and Kirani does too. = Yenny gets fifty thousands from her father . Kirani gets fifty thousands from her father. = Yenny gets as much money as Kirani does.

2. Showing differences : fewer + countable noun + than less + uncountable noun + than more + countable / uncountable noun + than

For Examples : a). I have more encyclopedias. My sister has five encyclopedias. = I have more encyclopedias than my sister does. = My sister has fewer encyclopedias than I do. b). Diana put two spoonfuls of sugar into the tea. Her mother put three spoonfuls of sugar into it. = Diana put less sugar in her tea than her mother did. = Dianas mother put more sugar in her tea than Diana did.
