GAS TURBINE

GE Power Systems
Oil & Gas
GE Power Systems is recognized as a global leader
in the power generation industry with a proven
track record of developing new technology,
products and services. The GE5 benefits from the
synergy between GE’s Aircraft Engine designs and
GE Oil & Gas Nuovo Pignone Gas Turbine
designs leading a new evolution in the extended
GE line of small gas turbines.

The GE5 combines these technologies (aircraft

engine and heavy duty) to produce a high
efficiency yet rugged and durable machine.
There are more than a million fired hours on the
GE class of small turbines and millions of flight
hours on GE aircraft engines. Reliability has been
a key design initiative in every GE turbine and has
been incorporated in the new unit.

The GE5 development effort also utilized GE’s Six

Sigma Total Quality methodology for design and
manufacturing. As a result the machine achieved
performance targets in its initial testing program.

The GE5 is a 6 MW range industrial duty gas

turbine designed in two configurations: a single
shaft for power generation and a two shaft for
mechanical drive applications. Both the single
and two shaft versions have a high commonality
of parts which ensures parts availability in a
shorter time and contributes to overall reduction
in costs of operation and maintenance.

The high efficiency of the machine coupled with

low emissions make the GE5 a leader in its class
for most applications. The robust design
incorporates dual fuel capability, a range of
standard options, and quick and easy on site
maintenance. The flexibility, simplicity and
compactness also make it ideal for industrial
power generation, including steam production,

Design Philosophy
Compressor
The GE5 compressor benefits from several decades of
compressor design evolution focused on achieving higher
efficiency.
The new compressor is scaled from its proven GE10
counterpart.
It is a high performance, axial flow design derived from
GE Aircraft Engine technology. GE Oil & Gas, utilizing
GE’s expertise, has greatly improved overall
compressor performance without sacrificing reliability
or mechanical integrity.
The 11 stage compressor produces a pressure ratio of 15:1.
The first three stages of stator blades are adjustable to
optimise efficiencies by maximizing exhaust gas tempe-
rature at partial load operation. Compressor blades are
assembled onto a solid forged rotor while stator blades
are mounted onto ductile cast iron casings.

Turbine
The turbine itself is a compact, high efficiency design with
two reaction stages. The advanced design methodology
utilized by GE Oil & Gas resulted in a high performance
machine with significantly fewer parts. In addition state-of-
the-art cooling techniques for the first stage of the turbine
allowed the use of conventional materials for nozzles and
buckets.

The gas turbine package itself has been designed with an emphasis on
standardization, optimization of factory assembly, and the elimination of
costly field assembly methodologies. The result is that the standard package
satisfies the needs of the typical user and their desires thereby resulting in
lower cost installation and maintenance costs.

Principles of modularity adopted into the design also contribute to lowering

these costs. The package is also designed and manufactured using
principles of modularity.
The gas turbine module consists of a baseplate which includes, besides

the engine, starting system, load gear, auxiliaries and acoustic enclosure.
The off-base equipment is limited to the lube oil coolers and the electric
generator.
The entire package is compact with a footprint of only 5810 mm (L) x

2500 mm (W) provides the user with the flexibility to locate the system
indoors or near pre-existing facilities. The inlet filtration module is
designed for mounting above the gas turbine enclosure to further
optimize footprint. The enclosure has lateral panelswide double-jointed
doors allowing for ease of access to all turbine components and

auxiliaries for maintenance or engine removal.

exhaust energy, otherwise wasted, can be harnessed for
steam production thereby improving system efficiency
in combined heat and power (CHP) applications.
The savings in the cost of extra fuel and an auxiliary
boiler can be substantial. Applications can range from
simple cycle power generation to cogeneration
installations for industrial and institutional users.
The industrial user benefits particularly from the
extended maintenance cycles associated with designs
aimed at extending part life. The planned high
reliability and availability of the GE5 allows industrial
users to avoid production losses due to utility
interruptions while planning maintenance coincident
with regularly scheduled plant shutdowns.
In Oil & Gas applications, high reliability with
availability guarantees can mean reductions in
production losses that result from equipment
breakdown and downtime due to frequent or lengthy
maintenance requirements.
