INTRODUCTION As a young kid, I used to grow up with the familiar statement, follow the leader . From the time when I gained consciousness in this world, to the very moment I acquired knowledge, encountering this vital concept keeps me wondering. While in school, I often hear my teacher say these words in the class. At church, the preacher mentions about it in the pulpit. At home, my parents taught me to follow a similar rule: do as I teach, not as I do. In business, this has become the issue of competition. Politics argue with the same stuff over and over again. Everyones talking about the leadership thing. But, what is this intriguing subject we call leadership? Why do people talk about it? What does it take to become a leader? Most of us want it, but few achieve it. We have a lot of definitions and descriptions about leadership, yet only few understand it. Having the right frame of mind with the right kind of principles are the key points to understanding leadership. Link it up with desire, and nothing can stop you from becoming a leader. There are many false perceptions about leadership. Some of us believe that it is an exclusive league for those who are born with it. I argue that that's illogical. Leaders are not born, they are made. I remember a typical story in one of John Maxwells book, when a group of tourists visited a scenic village. As they walked by, one tourist asked an old man in a demeaning manner, were any great men born in this village? The old man responded, Nope, only babies. Leadership is NOT discovered, it is developed. The truly born leader will always come out; but to remain on top, natural leadership qualities must be developed. You dont have to be born rich or influential to become a leader. As long as you have the brain , you have the same chance as everyone else: to becoming the next big person in your school, community or nation. Today, you will learn about your purpose. Chapter 1 Discover Your Purpose There are a lot of uncertainties that we deal almost every day. Do I have the guts of becoming successful? Can I be like him or her? Can I become a leader? Few of the most frequently asked questions that sometimes cloud our minds and cause our little confidence to give up. The aftermath, we get discouraged and lose the will to and pursue our dreams. If only you knew the ultimate reason of your existence, you wont think of leadership as an impossible dream. If only you realized that life is a gift, you wont react to challenges like a loser. You must have discovered the truth about your GREAT PURPOSE. What on Earth are you created for? Getting directly into planning or goal-setting to pursue your goals wont drive you to success unless you understand the ultimate reason of living. Purpose precedes plans. Everything begins and ends with a single word, purpose. How should we define purpose? The dictionary defines it as the original intent for which anything is done, created, or exists. I strongly believe to what the Bible says that man was originally designed for a divine purpose. Whether you are a skeptic, an atheist, or an unbeliever; you have to accept this fundamental truth: YOU WERE BORN TO LEAD. Allow me to share to you Gods mighty declaration in Genesis 1:28: God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground. Take note of the words, subdue and rule. Does it have something to do with leadership? Absolutely, it has a great connection with the concept of leadership. In other versions, the word rule is replaced with the word dominion. When you rule or lead, you dominate. It comes from the Greek word which means sovereign leadership. Thus, it is Gods will and mandate that every man should consider leadership as part of his purpose. This should be implanted in your mindset; you are created to become a leader. Of course, dominion here doesnt mean to manipulate or control people. Rather it is the ability to guide, direct or lead people towards a fulfilled life. It may sound spiritual but theres no one more powerful than God can convince you to begin your journey of leadership. This is the logic: A Creator knows the real use of His creation. No artist in the world created a masterpiece for nothing. No one is born without use. Forget about the negative feedbacks people may throw at your back. You are a masterpiece and you will be whatever you want to be. Believe in yourself. Make it your personal confession. Proverbs 23:7 remind us that As a man thinks about himself, so he is. If you believe youll become a leader, so youll be.

Remember these few lines from a poem. Though you cannot go back and make a brand -new start, my friend Anyone can start from now and make a brand-new end. Selfless Kind of Purpose No man or woman is an island. To exist just for yourself is meaningless. You can achieve the most satisfaction when you feel related to some greater purpose in life, something greater than yourself. This old adage from Denis Waitley has a great impact on the real thing behind leadership. Many assume that becoming a leader is a self-satisfying pursuit. No, its not just about who you are. Its also about what others become because of you. John Maxwell, in his book Developing the Leader Within You simply defined leadership as INFLUENCE. According to him, He who thinketh he leadeth and hath no one following him is only taking a walk. Influence is the ability to obtain followers. If you dont have followers, you are not a leader after all. Alexander the Great, Jesus Christ, Mahatma Gandhi, Napoleon Bonaparte and Winston Churchill are some of the famous leaders who have different abilities and each had followers. We can see that these great leaders of our history were noted because of their influence in their respective fields. They became great because they left a legacy to our present civilization. What I want to emphasize is the quality of your influence. Do you want to be a leader because you want to promote a positive model to others, or you want to be a leader because of a selfish ambition? You need to check your motives before working out your action plan. What motivates you? Most people are naturally motivated. Just watch a little child try to explore and find what is in a room. That is a natural kind of motivation. Any normal person is driven by a certain impulse to begin an endeavor. Moreover, the environment that motivates also plays an important role in motivation. What you sense or feel around you may affect your behavior. There are several factors that motivate people. Significant cause. People pursue a cause that will have a lifelong impact. They need to see what they are doing is not useless effort, but making a contribution. People must perceive value in what they are doing. But it does not come by activity alone; it also matters by the desire to achieve the end result. Positive dissatisfaction. According to Maxwells book, dissatisfaction is the one-word description for motivation. Dissatisfied people are highly motivated people, for they see the need for immediate change. They know something is wrong and often know what needs to be done. Recognition. A notable author once said that we live by encouragement and we die without it. Personal achievement is motivating, but its much more so when someone appreciates your accomplishment and gives

worth to it. Recognition is one way to give meaning to a persons existence. Clear expectations. People are driven to move when they know exactly what they are to do and have the confidence that they can do it successfully. So when you see a clear picture of what you are going to do, it is easy for you to carry out the task. These factors play an essential part in your everyday life. It is motivation that pushes us through our earnest goals. When you have the inward force or the fire to take the challenge of leadership, nothing can keep you from becoming a leader. The desire should come out within you first. It is like a fuel that gives you power as you take the road to success. Discovering lifes purpose is the key to fulfillment. Without a complete understanding about your original intent of existence, frustration and disappointment replaces the game. CHAPTER 2 Define your Goal

A familiar quote states that success is a progressive realization of a predetermined goal. In other words, we can say that leadership starts from a specific goal. It means that you have to set a projected result before you decide to move and accomplish it. It is a normal thing to think and meditate before you build a house. You have to be particular what design or style suits you. You have to be exact on what you want for your house. A basketball player may be a good dribbler but he has to overcome his opponents to shoot the ball. A dart player requires the skill of precision to hit the bulls eye. All of these suggest the ideas of planning and goal-setting. What is a goal? As you wake up everyday, you get out from bed with the intent to do something. Therefore, you have a goal. The business dictionary defines goal as an observable and measurable end result having one or more objectives to be achieved within a more or less fixed time frame. Wikipedia describes it as the anticipated result which guides reaction or end. Merriam-Webster Online states that goal is the end to which the effort is directed. All definitions speak about the end result. Goal-setting is a vital component in any course of action. Whether it is for career, life, or a simple activity, a systematic approach is needed to set your objectives. Goal-setting and planning is like a father-son relationship. They go hand in hand. One cannot exist without the other. If you suppose to set a projected result, you have to sit, think and write things out. Planning is the process of setting goals, developing strategies, and outlining tasks and schedules to accomplish the goals. It is the preliminary step you take before an action is done. It means looking ahead and chalking out future courses of action to be followed. The product of leadership primarily depends on how well you do the first step. If you started right, youll end up successful. But if you begin with wrong decisions, youll surely end up in the wrong direction. The road towards leadership is not that easy. Everything demands your whole strength and ability. You have to cross the bridge of trials and tests. So you need the right action plan to guide you throughout the journey. If you want to become the next successful leader, your goal should be SMART. 1. Specific. If you want to be a leader, think of the clear and definite field where you want to excel. Are you a student? You must lead the campus where you belong. If you are a business person, you must excel in the business society. If you belong to an organization, then be particular to what position you want to have. Specific goals are necessary to arrive at an exact end result. Moreover, evaluate your self thoroughly if your goal is not broad enough so you can create a more achievable course of action. 2. Measurable. Measurability answers the question How will I know when it is accomplished? It is important to determine how far have you progress towards your goal. Am I making a good move? you have to evaluate

every detail. This is to keep you on track on the development of your strategies. In leadership, you have to gauge the plus points against the weak points to apply a needed effort in order to achieve the ultimate goal. If you want to keep yourself driven and keep your momentum going, you have to take action steps every single day, even if it is just a small step. 3. Attainable. Leadership does not mean you have to conquer the position of anybody by force to fulfill your desire. We may talk about competition here but it goes in to the process. You dont have to rush. As long as you know you have the ability to reach the goal, go for it. If you think, its not yet time for you to shine just prepare yourself. Dont go to the battle without any armor. The attainability of your targeted goal largely depends on your readiness. 4. Realistic. Most of us dream of different dreams. Dreaming to become a leader is not bad. The bad comes when you believe the things that are not realistic. For instance, you aim to become the next CEO of a company, but the problem is you dont even have a job. Its just fantasizing. When you have the desire, it should push you to find ways to realize that desire and turned it into reality. 5. Time-bound. Goals can be identified as long term or short term. If you go for long-term goals, you have to anticipate years. If its a short goal, it may take a day or few days. Preferably, leadership is a long term goal. It is not magic nor a sudden or abrupt change. It takes years to reach the top and stay on it. You need to have a target when you want to see the results. You have to mark your calendar when is the time you look forward to. Though we may consider the fact that becoming a leader has its appointed time, your determination to achieve it still has a great impact. Value of a Vision John Maxwell wrote in his book that vision is the indispensable quality of leadership. He said that without it, energy fades away, deadlines are missed, personal agendas begin to go down, production falls, and people scatter. Maxwell emphasizes the significance of vision in leadership. Even the Bible reveals to us in Proverbs 29:18 that Where there is no vision, the people perish. All great leaders possess two things: They know where they are going and they are able to persuade others to follow . All plans and strategies are futile if a leader doesnt have foresight- the ability to see the opportunities within the current circumstances. I always remember the story of Disney World. During its grand opening, Mrs. Walt Disney was asked to make a speech since Walt had died. She was welcomed by a man who said,Mrs. Disney, I just wish Walt have seen this. She stood up and said, He did, and sat down. Walt Disney already saw whats the actual Disney World is. That is vision! It is seeing the end from the beginning, like what Stephen Hayes posted in his blog. Vision is being able to see where youre going, to see whats up the road ahead. You have to have a personal ownership of a vision. Look within you, what do you feel? Look ahead of you, what is the big picture? Look above you, what does God expect of you? These are questions concerning your vision. My definition of success is: Knowing God and His purpose for me; growing to my maximum potential; and sowing seeds that help others.

Many great men began life in the poorest and most humble of homes, with little education and no advantages. Did you know that Thomas Edison was deaf and started as newsboy on trains, that John D. Rockefeller started his work at $6 a week and Andrew Carnegie at $4 a month? Did you know that Julius Caesar was an epileptic, Plato a hunchback, Charles Dickens a lame, and Homer was blind? What gave these great individuals the determination to conquer the obstacles and become successful? Each person had an inner vision that lit a fire that could not be extinguished. Theres no barrier that can hold you back of reaching your goal. Those great men proved to us that they triumph over adversities in spite of their limitations. You too can do it. With the right preparation accompanied with a vision, nothing is impossible for you to achieve. CHAPTER 3 Develop your Potential We are used to hearing the word 'potential'. A potential artist, a potential singer, a potential writer. So, what does this word imply? Our potential refers to the inherent capacity for coming into being. Or simply, whatever you are born to do, you are built to do. Every human being is gifted with it. Our potential equals our purpose. In the first chapter, I revealed to you the original plan of why we exist. Then, we talked about what you can do about it. So, enclosed in that whole package are our potentials. These are the capacities, abilities or talents that are soon coming to existence if developed or honed. After understanding your purpose, you will also gradually find out the potentials you have. Its up for you to discover your hidden skills and qualities. No person in this world is exempted to that. All of us have seeds of greatness within us. What is Personal Potential? Your personal potential includes all sorts of tasks and activities that you can be great at. For example, each of us may excel in sports, hobbies, jobs and relationships. It also reveals the person you can become-the career, professions, social status and the fame you could achieve. And lastly, it also describes what it is possible for you to achieve namely your life goals, wealth, honors, recognitions as well as the impact that you can have on your society, nation or the world. You have to bear in mind that your potential is boundless. It is not limited to just one aspect of your life. It flows like a river together with streams of identical minds and abilities. You dont only have potential in your profession or career, but you can be great in love and building relationships. Nobody knows what are still to be exposed; it is only you who can figure it out. How to discover your potential? The answer is simple. Look within you, not look around you. Unique is a one-word description for every individual. If you want to become a successful leader, forget about copying. Each of us has our own level or degree of ability to lead. There are things that you can do that others cant. You dont really need to imitate their techniques or style. You can learn from their experiences but its not necessary to imitate them. You can paint your own masterpiece. Sometimes, we often struggle in discovering our potential because we keep on comparing ourselves to other people. We look for qualities they have and reflect it on our own. The result, we fall into the mire of disappointment and discouragement. It should not be like that. Stop contrasting yourself against the achievements of others. Focus on what you can do, not on what you cannot do. Let your untapped qualities come out not by pressure, but by nature. Some of us are good in speaking; others just seem to have been born in the kitchen. Some are great in stroking their pen, others are gifted with voice. You may dont have any of these potentials, but Im sure you can identify whats missing or not included in the list. Now you have the chance to put yours on the record.

How to develop your potential? In her book, Joyce Meyer said that nobody starts in the finish line. You have to develop your potential and convert it to a fulfilling end result. Here are some helpful tips that can contribute to your leadership success.

Identify the greatest areas of your potential. Which particular field are you great at? Do you have the
forte in leading the youth or a group of men? Do you have strong points in swimming or tennis? Dont be afraid to ask these questions in front of the mirror. This first step largely affects your accomplishment.

Claim your spot. If you already knew what your piece is, declare it yours. Believe and have the
confidence that you can make it. Take it as your precious property and that nobody can steal it from you. Be assertive, if possible, shout it out loud. I am a swimmer! or I am a leader!

Scope it with determination. In this step, think of the part(s) of your life where you can apply the
potential you have. Be determined to use this enhanced skill. Seek every opportunity of showcasing your new ability.

Appreciate gender diversity. Read, research, take advices from the experts. You need to back up your skills
with thorough knowledge from reliable persons. Reading books, attending seminars and trainings can help you optimize your potentials. Go outside the limit of your gender.

Take it to practice. What you have learned so far, put it into practice. Its a familiar quote that sums up
every principle of leadership. Practice makes perfection. It widens our experiences. It shapes new habits. You wont improve in your skills if you are reluctant to follow the right standards. The key to develop your potential is to have self-discipline.

Change your attitude. It is an extra plus in leadership. It is improbable that a person with a bad attitude
can continuously be a success. Leadership requires positive thinking. Once our minds are spoiled with negative notions, our chances for long-term success diminish.

Be persistent. Dont lose heart if you commit mistakes or failures. Its a normal thing to fail, but take it as
an opportunity to begin again more intelligently. Success is really a process. You have to be patient and persistent in every step of the way. After all, learning from our failures help us to grow and mature in our decisions.

Be grateful. Appreciate what potentials you have. Be thankful to God for the gifts you receive from Him.
You wont possess it without His favor.

Be humble. The achievements you can have will fall to nothing if you begin to nurture conceit in your
heart. Gaining leadership qualities is not an instance to be boasted but an opportunity to contribute for the benefit of others. Keep your feet on the ground no matter what awards, medals or certificates you get. Humility counts more than any feats.

Conclusion Leadership is not an instantaneous event. It is a journey, a continuous process. Like success, it is a result of careful planning and undertaking. It needs principles to support you in realizing your goals. You have to put things in order. You need a system to direct you to satisfying results. Leadership is not just all about earning a position or status, it is influence. Influence means the ability to obtain followers. It is being a role model, a good example. If you want to have the best investment in the future, you have to possess proper influence today. Leadership can be taught. It can be learned or acquired. It is a skill that can be developed. Every person regardless of decent, credentials, or status has a big chance of becoming a leader. It is not just for the born with it. As long as you have the desire and determination, no one can keep you from becoming the great man or woman in the world. Everything rises and falls in leadership. Taking the ladder towards the top requires a step-by-step approach. It begins with a complete understanding of your purpose. It is the original intention why you are born. Discovering the ultimate purpose of your life is the answer to find fulfillment. As you found the real meaning of your existence, you become motivated to reach the finish line. Goal-setting and planning then takes place. You begin with the right action plan before you go to the battlefield. Vision takes you to the future. As you go through the process, you have to brace up with your potentials. These are the hidden qualities you need to develop while heading towards success. Leadership is the willingness to take responsibility and makes decisions for yourself. It is everybodys quest and challenge. No one wants to remain a slave. A servant dreams to become a master. An employee desires to be the next boss in a company. A student works hard for a diploma. The poor wants to be rich. Any ordinary man wishes to improve his condition. As long as we live, we all have the possibilities of reaching our goals. God created man to live a happy and fulfilled life. His purpose is already built-in our DNA. But the secret to unlock this fulfillment lies in our hands. We only have to discover it ourself. Each of us is given the keys to open up our leadership box. It may come in different sizes, but Im sure we all have our share of greatness. The challenge of leadership today calls out for genuine change. Don't think you're capable of change? I beg to differ.
