The market for private art advisor grows. Silly status hunting?

No, rather a good support in an expanding range art world. In New York, no one raises an eyebrow at that whoever bought a new floor hire someone to fill it with art. This one is a person who provides guidance including current trends, who knows what is in the long run and who have an eye for quality. An art personal shopper, simply. As a customer of a larger department stores can get expert help updating vrgarderoben, or a newcomer can get help from a home decorator, the party would now get help from auction houses or independent advisers to build up its own art collection. And thus ensuring that the collection will be just as impressive, just right or startling, as the client pleases. In Sweden, the trend has not gone as far as in the U.S., but art advisers have been clearly more to do in the past five years. Theo Lindqvist runs her own art advisory firm. He is an engineer in the ground and has had a career in the industry and as a management consultant. He has collected art long and given advice to friends for long time, but initially had art as a hobby, with no intention of living in it. - My own and my friends' art investment went well and it spread. When a person who was not a friend called me in 2009 and asked for help, I knew it was possible to do business in this, he says. Theo Lindqvist's customers are investment oriented and often wish that the purchase of a certain work to be a good deal. Art serves as a complement to more traditional investments. Theo Lindqvist says that it is an advantage that he speaks the same language as our customers do. - A business executive complained once about it being too much bilfolk in the automotive industry. Many people think that's too much art folk art in the industry, he says. That does not stop art advisers Ebba Winberg and Lisa Ivermark to attract customers. They both have a background in the art world, and is currently employed at Bukowski and Stockholms Auktionsverk. Although they work in auction houses, saying they act as independent advisers. They are reluctant perhaps to buy from each other, with free choice among gallery owners and international auction houses. It is a relatively new phenomenon, but the business is growing. The typical customer is, according to all three art advisor, a man between 35 and 55, who made a fortune in finance, real estate or reklam.Eftersom art is often a joint decision, the wife will eventually enter the picture. Have art collecting thus gone and become a popular phenomenon? Have a piece of art that a few decades ago was bought with heart and soul, often after much deliberation, turned into one of the crowd of the commercial world all the

merchandise? And art collection reduced to a fashion paraphernalia, or maybe a contemporary swagger building? - There will always be those who buy "trophy art", ie those who buy to show their wealth and status. Already on Anders Zorn's time was the merchant who bought Zorn Boards, to flaunt how much money they had. But my experience is that many who approach the counselors have a genuine interest in art, and once they begin to collect as interest grows further, says Lisa Ivemark. The first step in building an art collection is to get the customer to see as much art as possible. By visiting galleries, museums and auctions will Advisers to what the customer likes. There is a wide range and as an advisor, it might be useful to provide guidance. - When clients come to me I want to see what they already have or I ask them to see something they like. This gives me a direction to go by, says Ebba Winberg. Some of the advisors' clients have inherited a collection and want to build on it. Others have collected a long time and are looking for a specific work of art. A few are beginners. Ebba Winberg says that the inherited art should ask whether there is anything he or she likes, and try to drop the sentimental value. - It's liberating to do away with art, so the tip is to screen and focus and buy any of our contemporaries. It adds value to collect contemporary art. When will you follow in your own time, says Ebba Winberg. Lisa Ivemark find a collection becomes more personal if it includes both contemporary and ancient art. - I'm not arbiters without seeking the customer something in turn of the century art becomes the Council to focus on a few artists that I am highlighting. I know what is good quality, why to buy a Bruno Liljeforsgatan before another and the price that is reasonable, says Lisa Ivemark. A work of art history, its provenance, is important for the value. Value increases for example, if the artwork has been lent to exhibitions. Art's previous owner also affect the value, as if the artist is included in public and private collections. The artist's education and which gallery that represents the artist also plays a role. He points out that it may be worthwhile to start collecting the work of young artists. Buying the same artists in ten years as they have become more established, it is often much more expensive. But at the same time, of course, the risk is also higher. As with most investments, the risk and thus the potential maximum of the young and unknown. The behavior of the customers often change with time. Those who once thought of figurative art, want to maybe later more abstract. And many dare to eventually

go from just buying the neighbor is on the walls to rely on their own personal taste. Therefore it is important that there is a secondary market for the artwork. Contemporary art is all the rage right now and this is reflected not least in the highs recorded at last year's auctions, both in Sweden and abroad. There are long waiting lists of artists who Gunnel Whlstrand and Karin Mamma Andersson. - I tell my clients to have a more international perspective. I rarely recommend someone to buy something in Sweden, which just goes to sell in Sweden. Now, a new generation of Swedish artists, who do not go the way through Swedish galleries without directly address international galleries, says Ebba Winberg. - Sweden is too small and thats only for a handful of Swedish artists. The benefit of my clients is that they are already global. They go more often at Moma in New York than the Museum of Modern Art, and dare to buy international art, he says. Occasionally invites art advisers with clients in international trade fairs and exhibitions of private collections. Once the customer has focused on a few artists and is about to strike, the Council will not be too stingy. - Quality costs so buy rather a work for 100,000 to 200,000 crowns more than for smaller amounts. One can of course make cheaper purchases of unestablished artists, but then it is not to have too high expectations that they'll just break through, says Ebba Winberg. An independent art advisor is on the collector's side, and has no financial connections with galleries. They negotiate the best price possible for the customer. Counselors will in turn charge a fee when customers buy and sell. The contacts are Art Council's most important tools for success. When Theo Lindqvist know that a good artist should have vernissage he sends images to their collectors and 10 percent might bite. Then he calls gallerist to reserve the artwork that his customers want to buy, before the opening of the exhibition has opened. - Do you see a work of art that is still left after the opening and after the exhibition lasted for a while, then you should really love it to turn to. There is a reason that it has not been sold, says Theo Lindqvist. FACTS Three art advisers: Lisa Ivemark Age: 47 years old.
