Research on Careers in Fashion Design: An Annotated Bibliography This paper focuses on pursuing a career in the fashion industry and information about the different aspects of what it takes to be a fashion designer. This annotated bibliography contains information on the job, fashion illustrating and pattern making, education and experience, qualities of people needed in certain positions, business and management techniques, and average salaries provided to those in this career. There are several different jobs in the fashion industry. Some jobs are a personal stylist who creates wardrobes for clients, a sales associate/pacesetter (top salesperson in a department), manager, fashion assistant, state manager (for fashion shows), cosmetic adviser, visual coordinator, clientele specialist, and personal shoppers. Other jobs for hands-on, detailoriented people are computer pattern-making, marking (laying out pattern pieces on a long sheet of paper called a marker that will be used to cut the fabric of a garment) and grading (creating the different sizes that garments come in). All of these are excellent career choices that usually offer security, benefits, and great pay for large, established companies.

It gives you an opportunity to turn a passion into a livelihood. Of course it can be expensive and you might not make a profit for several years but it is well worth it. People in the fashion industry usually have a flair for fashion and style, are creative, artistic, computer savvy, enjoy working in the business world, love shopping, have an eye for fabric, good sense of space and volume, and are interested in advertising and production promotion. Dior President Sidney Toledano describes the management of the business like a nuclear power plant. Toledant also says I am an engineer, after all, I think in terms of energy. I know how to optimize it and how to take risks to maximize it. The article also mentions the operation of Fendi, by CEO Michael Burke, Gucci designer, Frida Giannini, and Rochas. All of the designers in the article say the same thing, careers in the fashion industry dont just include good designs, but also good management and business skills.
