Fluency The uses of trees (Read this passage aloud and answer these questions carefully) We know from experience that trees cause rainfall. The leaves of trees give out lot f water vapour into the atmosphere ane this help to cool the air. That is why on a hot day it is cooler under trees than inside a building. The cool forest air cools rain clouds and helps to cause rain. That is why rainfall over forests is greater than in other areas. Our earth has a covering of fine soil. On the surface, under which lie rocks of various kinds. This ground soil supports the life of plants. Nature takes millions of years to form fertile soil an inch thick. But a single heavy shower sometimes washes away a large part of the surface soil on a bare hillside. This will not happen in places where there are plenty of trees. Since trees stop the free flow of water, and their roots hold the soil together, they prevent the soil from being washed away. The soil in forests is full of twigs, dead leaves and other decaying vegetation. This rich soil absorbs water very easily like a sponge. In doing so, trees also helps to prevent sudden floods. Mike: Hello, my name's Mike, Mike Jones. Alen: Hi, I'm Allen, Allen Wang. Mike: Nice to meet you, Allen. Allen: Nice to meet you too, Mike. Mike: How are you doing today? Allen: I'm okay, thanks, how are you? Mike: I'm fine, thanks. Allen: So, your family name is Jones? Mike: What? Family name? Allen: Yeah, family name...Jones. Mike: Oh, you mean my last name? Allen: Well, in Asia, we call the second name, the family name. Your family name is Jones. Mike: Oh, okay, because the whole family has the same name so you call it family name. Allen: Something like that. Mike: In Western countries, we call it the last name because it comes after our first name, so, where I come from, Jones is my last name. Allen: So, Wang is my last name and family name. Mike: And Jones is my family name AND last name...I got it. Allen: So, you go to this school too? Mike: Yeah, hey, didn't I see you last week with Karen? Allen: Karen? Oh, Karen Richards? Mike: Yes, she's a friend of mine from last year. Allen: Oh, okay, Her and I have the same math class. Sometimes we study together. She's really smart! Mike: She's smart alright and funny too! Does she still tell a lot of jokes? Allen: Sometimes, like the one about the tiger and the clown and how they went to McDonald's and ordered a Big Mac and french fries? Mike: That's such a funny one! Allen: Oh, hey, Mike, I have to go to my next class. Mike: Yeah, me too. Say hi to Karen for me, will you? Allen: Sure, okay, have a good day, see you around. Mike: Yeah, you too, bye.

Tom: Hi. I don't think we've met. My name's Tom. Jenny: Hi, Tom. Nice to meet you. My name is Juanita, but everybody calls me Jenny. Tom: Nice to meet you, Jenny. So, where are you from? Jenny: Well, originally I'm from Argentina, but we moved to the United States when I was about five years old. My parents now live in Chile. That's where they first met. How about you, Tom? Tom: I was born in Fresno, California, and we lived there until I was seven. Then, since my father worked for the military, we moved all over the place. Jenny: Oh yeah? Where are some of the places you've lived? Tom: Mostly, we were overseas. We spent a total of ten years in Korea, Germany, and Okinawa, Japan. We were transferred back to the States three years ago, but I think my parents would have liked to live overseas for at least 20 more years. Jenny: Wow. It sounds like you've had an interesting life. So, what do you do now? Tom: I'm a student at Purdue University. Jenny: Oh really? What are you studying? Tom: I'm majoring in psychology. How about you? What do you do? Jenny: Well, I'm working as a sales representative for Vega Computers downtown. Tom: No kidding! My brother works there too.
