Sadly, preventable injuries are the greatest killer of kids 14 and under. In Washtenaw and Livingston counties weve had our share of preventable injuries to children said Amber Kroeker, Safe Kids Huron Valley coordinator and Injury Prevention health educator for Mott Childrens Hospital. Thats why Safe Kids Huron Valley is joining Safe Kids Michigan and Safe Kids Worldwide to celebrate Safe Kids Day on Saturday. Together we hope to raise awareness to continue our efforts and protect kids from serious preventable

injuries, said Kroeker. What weve found is that many injuries to children can be avoided if parents and caregivers are educated or reminded of some very important and easy steps to keep their children safe. For example, in Livingston and Washtenaw counties, Safe Kids Huron Valley hosts free car seat checkup events to inform parents on how to properly install their childs safety seat in their vehicle. Other events are focused on educating parents on infant safe sleep habits; fire, water, and home safety; Walk to School Day; poison prevention; sports safety, and more.

way. Like a Mad Lib, but in reverse. The Wayne State University Press poets will lead their team of creative writers to craft totally unique poems, beginning with a partially created work. After the poems are completed, they will be read aloud, followed by a selection of original poetry from each poet. Organizers say the session is great for groups of adults and families with children ages 10 and up, but everyone is encouraged to come and enjoy the readings. In addition to the session, Nicolas Books will be selling all of the Made in Michigan Writers Series titles just outside the library. 826michigan students will be on hand to entertain attendees with their own work, before and after the program.
