Running Head: PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR BOOK

Project Proposal for Book on Speech Pathology Abigail A. Tempel Chapin High School

PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR BOOK

2

Abstract This proposal explores the reasons of why i should read Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships: Decoding Social Mysteries through the Unique Perspectives of Autism. It also explains the qualifications that I have that make me eligible to read this book and projects I can do with this book to help me understand the text better. It also explains the budget needed for this proposal. This proposal also explores how this book will connect to my possible future career, a speech pathologist. This book connects to my project because it is about the experiences that Temple Grandin has had in her social lives and how Autistic children react to different situations. This connects to speech pathology because a speech pathologist works with Autistic and speech deficient children and teaching them how to connect with their peers and fit in socially. This proposal also explains the point of reading this book and how it will help me become a better speech pathologist. Keywords: speech pathologist, Autistic, speech deficient

Project Proposal for Book on Speech Pathology Introduction The book Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships: Decoding Social Mysteries Through the Unique Perspectives of Autism, is about Temple Grandins life experiences with the social rules she has learned throughout her life that most Autistics dont know from instinct. The future career I am interested in entering in is a Speech Pathologist because they work with Autistic and socially challenged children and teach them speech and social skills through different activities. This book connects with speech pathology because it would help me to understand how some Autistic childrens minds work when it comes to socially interacting with their peers and the fears they face when doing so. Current Situation The problems I face right now with this project is that I dont quite understand the way that some Autistic minds work and why they dont socially know how to interact with their peers. I also dont know everything I need to know about speech pathology so this book would help me to understand how their speech disabilities affect how they socialize with their friends. Project Plan I will finish the book by March 4, 2013 at most. While reading this book, I could interview my cousin who has Aspergers (which is a form of Autism) and ask her if she has the same social problems as Temple Grandin does and compare their experiences. I will do this interview on February 26, 2013 when I am halfway through the book. After reading this book I could go and job shadow Mrs. Spell, a speech pathologist, and

observe her working with her Autistic patients. The date for job shadowing Mrs. Spell is TBA. After the job shadow, I will write a reflection on what I learned while job shadowing Mrs. Spell. My whole project will be completed by March 13, 2013. Qualifications I am qualified to read this book because I know a lot about the social relationships of Autistic children and Autism that I will be able to understand the book. It will help me to widen my knowledge of Autism and help me to understand more of the social side of Autism more than the diagnosis. I have also worked with Autistic children before so I understand the way that they react to certain situations and how they socially interact with people their age. Conclusion: Costs and Benefits The point of me reading this book is to help me to get inside the minds of Autistic children and their social experiences so that in the future I will be able to do my job better. Reading this book will help me to be able to know more about my job and perform better in my job. This project will not be very costly and it wont cost anything to do my while reading and after reading assignments.
