There are three ways in which the Lord reveals His will
to us, to guide us, and to fit us to guide others. How may we
know His voice from that of a stranger? How shall we
distinguish it from the voice of a false shepherd? God reveals
His will to us in His word, the Holy Scriptures. His voice
is also revealed in His providential workings; and it will be
recognized if we do not separate our souls from Him by
walking in our own ways, doing according to our own wills,
and following the promptings of an unsanctified heart, until
the senses have become so confused that eternal things are
not discerned, and the voice of Satan is so disguised that it is
accepted as the voice of God.

Another way in which God's voice is heard is through
the appeals of His Holy Spirit, making impressions upon the
heart, which will be wrought out in the character. If you are
in doubt upon any subject you must first consult the Scriptures.
If you have truly begun the life of faith you have given
yourself to the Lord to be wholly His, and He has taken you
to mold and fashion according to His purpose, that you may
be a vessel unto honor. You should have an earnest desire
to be pliable in His hands and to follow whithersoever He
may lead you. You are then trusting Him to work out His
designs, while at the same time you are co-operating with
Him by working out your own salvation with fear and
trembling. You, my brother, will find difficulty here
because you have not yet learned by experience to know the
voice of the Good Shepherd, and this places you in doubt
and peril. You ought to be able to distinguish His voice.

Sometimes various ways and purposes, different modes of
operation in connection with the work of God, are about
evenly balanced in the mind; but it is at this very point that
the nicest discrimination is necessary. And if anything is
accomplished to the purpose it must be done at the golden
moment. The slightest inclination of the weight in the balance
should be seen and should determine the matter at once. Long
delays tire the angels. It is even more excusable to make a
wrong decision sometimes than to be continually in a wavering
position, to be hesitating, sometimes inclined in one direction,
then in another. More perplexity and wretchedness result
from thus hesitating and doubting than from sometimes moving
too hastily.

I have been shown that the most signal victories and the
most fearful defeats have been on the turn of minutes. God

498

requires promptness of action. Delays, doubtings, hesitation,

and indecision frequently give the enemy every advantage.
My brother, you need to reform. The timing of things may
tell much in favor of truth. Victories are frequently lost
through delays. There will be crises in this cause. Prompt
and decisive action at the right time will gain glorious
triumphs, while delay and neglect will result in great failures and
positive dishonor to God. Rapid movements at the critical
moment often disarm the enemy, and he is disappointed and
vanquished, for he had expected time to lay plans and work
by artifice. -BC- 3T

The ability to do business with dispatch, and yet do it
thoroughly, is a great acquisition. My brother, you have really
felt that your cautious, hesitating course was commendable,
rather a virtue than a wrong. But from what the Lord has
shown me in this matter, these sluggish movements on your
part have greatly hindered the work of God and caused many
things to be left undone which in justice ought to have been
done with promptness. It will be difficult now for you to make
the changes in your character which God requires you to
make, because it was difficult for you to be punctual and
prompt of action in youth. When the character is formed, the
habits fixed, and the mental and moral faculties have become
firm, it is most difficult to unlearn wrong habits, to be prompt
in action. You should realize the value of time. You are not
excusable for leaving the most important, though unpleasant
work, hoping to get rid of doing it altogether, or thinking that
it will become less unpleasant, while you occupy your time
upon pleasant matters not really taxing. You should first do
500

the work which must be done and which involves the vital
interests of the cause, and only take up the less important
matters after the more essential are accomplished. Punctuality
and decision in the work and cause of God are highly essential.
Delays are virtually defeats. Minutes are golden and
should be improved to the very best account. Earthly relations
and personal interests should ever be secondary. Never should
the cause of God be left to suffer, in a single particular, because
of our earthly friends or dearest relatives.

Consecrate yourself to God in the morning; make
this your very first work. Let your prayer be, "Take
me, O Lord, as wholly Thine. I lay all my plans
at Thy feet. Use me today in Thy service. Abide
with me, and let all my work be wrought in Thee."
This is a daily matter. Each morning consecrate
yourself to God for that day. Surrender all your
plans to Him, to be carried out or given up as His
providence shall indicate. Thus day by day you
may be giving your life into the hands of God, and
thus your life will be molded more and more after
the life of Christ.

I also saw that God had messengers that He would
use in His cause, but they were not ready. They were
too light and trifling to exert a good influence over the
flock and did not feel the weight of the cause and the
worth of souls as God's messengers must feel in order
to effect good. Said the angel, <SI "Be ye clean that bear
the vessels of the Lord. Be ye clean that bear the
vessels of the Lord." <EI They can accomplish but little good
unless they are wholly given up to God and feel the
importance and solemnity of the last message of mercy
that is now being given to the scattered flock. Some
who are not called of God are very willing to go with
the message. But if they felt the weight of the cause
and the responsibilities of such a station, they would
feel to shrink back and say with the apostle, "Who is
sufficient for these things?" One reason why they are so
willing to go is that God has not laid upon them the
weight of the cause. Not all who proclaimed the first
and the second angel's message are to give the third,
even after they fully embrace it, for some have been in
so many errors and delusions that they can but just
save their own souls, and if they undertake to guide
others, they will be the means of overthrowing them.
But I saw that some who have formerly run deep into
fanaticism would be the first now to run before God
sends them, before they are purified from their past
errors; having error mixed with the truth, they would
feed the flock of God with it, and if they were suffered
to go on, the flock would become sickly, and distraction
and death would follow. I saw that they would have to
be sifted and sifted, until they were freed from all their

63

errors, or they could never enter the kingdom. The

messengers could not have that confidence in the judgment
and discernment of those who have been in errors
and fanaticism that they could have in those who have
been in the truth and not in extravagant errors.
Many, also, are too apt to urge out into the field some
who have but just professed the present truth, who
have much to learn and much to do before they can be
right in the sight of God themselves, much less point
out the way to others.

It is not pure love which actuates a man to make his

passions which clamor for indulgence. How few men
show their love in the manner specified by the apostle:
"Even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself
for it; that He might [not pollute it, but] sanctify and
cleanse it; . . . that it should be holy and without
blemish." This is the quality of love in the marriage

restraint and will not be dictated to or controlled by

reason. It is blind to consequences; it will not reason

In every age the gospel ministry has tended to the same end. But
every minute specification is not revealed in the Word of God. He desires
us to use our reason and experience, by their help adopting methods
and plans which, under the existing circumstances, are for the benefit
of the church and the schools and the other institutions which have
been established. "By their fruits ye shall know them." If erroneous
opinions are entertained, search the Scriptures with hearts which are
humbled before God. Pray to the Lord, believing that He hears, and that
He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. If we will only
believe, we shall receive the help we need.

"Every one that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth." Christ
is here presenting a law of the divine government. Asking for the Holy Spirit
is connected with receiving this gift. The Lord reads the hearts of all men.
He selects from His subjects those He can use, choosing material which can be
worked. He selects the most unpromising subjects, and through them magnifies
His own wisdom and power by causing them to sit among princes. In all ages He
has used human beings to carry out His purposes. He chooses subjects who will
not be perverted, who in all righteousness and faith will honour His name. He
passes by the men who have perverted the capabilities He has given them, and
selects men of His own wisdom who make Him their trust, their dependence,
their efficiency. He hews and polishes the rough stones He has quarried out
of the world. He works through men who realize that they must submit to the
axe, the chisel, and the hammer, lying passive under the divine hand. Through
those who voluntarily submit themselves to Him in all matters, who seek Him
in faith and hope, He works out His plans.
