UMTS PROTOCOLS AND SIGNALING PROCEDURES

Rapid growth of mobile Internet and other mobile services has resulted in increasing demand for higher data transmission capacity. Based on WCDMA, UMTS is one of the evolving 3G mobile communications systems designed to meet this demand. High bit rates for both circuit and packet switched services allow mobile multimedia, i.e. voice, data, video, in one and the same call. Since UMTS uses the same core network as GSM and GPRS, it allows operators to use existing infrastructure during the rollout phase. UMTS Protocols and signaling procedures When is URA used? What is a radio bearer? How is paging performed? Which protocols are involved in soft handover? What is NBAP? How does the UE synchronise to the network? How is the system information organised? What does the RLC do? What is the Iub interface?

Course Description
The Widermind UMTS Protocols and Procedures is a 2-day course designed to provide a thorough understanding of the UTRAN functionality and operation. The nodes in UTRAN communicate over different interfaces. The protocols used for signaling purposes and data transfer are described with the focus set on the air interface- and Radio Network Layer Protocols. Traffic cases are used in order to analyse the procedures supported by UTRAN for e.g. paging, connection establishment and handover.
