HVAC Control and
Balancing Dampers

Commercial Control Dampers are used in buildings to regulate the flow of air in a
HVAC system. They can be used in intake, exhaust, or mixed air applications.
There are two categories of control dampers:
Ba|ancing
Commercia| Contro|
Balancing
Manual balancing dampers are control dampers that regulate the flow of air but
are not intended to be used in applications as a positive shut off or for automatic
control. These dampers are shipped with manual hand quadrants, that can be
locked in place.
There are four balancing damper models available:
MBD-10/10M is a sing|e b|ade
MBD-15 is a mu|ti-b|ade
MBDR-50 is a round b|ade
Remote ba|ancing dampers offer the same function as the manua| ba|ancing dampers p|us the added benefit
of the ability to control the damper remotely at the diffuser or wall plate. These remote balancing dampers
are ideal for applications where it is difficult to get access to manually adjust the dampers and balance
airflow. The Quick Control remote control operates the damper motor by connecting to the wall, ceiling, or
diffuser mounted RJ11 connector.
There are two balancing damper models available:
RBD-10 is a sing|e b|ade
RBDR-50 is a round b|ade.

Commercial Control
Commercial control dampers regulate the flow of air in the same manner as manual balancing dampers, in
addition they can also be used as a positive shutoff or for automatic control.
There are three types of commercial control available:
Vo|ume contro| - VCD series
Air measuring contro| - AMD and IAQ series
Insu|ated contro| - ICD series
Part of Greenheck's unique approach to damper construction, Variab|e
Symmetric B|ade design (VSB} uses two princip|es to increase damper
performance. First, a|| damper b|ades are symmetric about their axis.
Second, any combination of 4, 5, 6, and 7 in. (102, 127, 152, and 178mm}
blade widths are used in a single damper. These two features, part of
Greenheck's standard construction, provide the fo||owing advantages.
Increases Mounting Flexibility - Symmetrical blades have identical
operating characteristics regardless of airflow direction. This allows a
Greenheck control damper to be mounted in either direction of flow, an
advantage when installing with space constraints.
Increases Free Area - Traditional damper designs with a single blade
width require oversized blade stops, limiting free area when the blades
are open (Figure 1}. Greenheck is ab|e to reduce or e|iminate b|ade stop
height, which maximizes free area, and increases damper performance
(Figure 2}.
Reduces Actuator Torque - If an unsymmetrical blade closes against
airflow, a large amount of torque is needed because the air distribution is
unba|anced. Greenheck's VSB design ba|ances airf|ow on each side of a
symmetrical blade, reducing the torque required to operate the damper.
The use of symmetrical blades has allowed Greenheck to reduce the
sizes and quantities of actuators used on dampers (Figure 3}.

Blades
3V b|ades are fabricated from a sing|e thickness of 16 ga. (1.5mm} ga|vanized stee| incorporating three
|ongitudina| V-Type grooves running the fu|| |ength of the b|ade to increase strength. This b|ade is standard
on mode|s VCD-15, 18, 20, 20V, 23, 23V, and SEVCD-23, designed for |ow to medium ve|ocity and
pressure applications.
A|rfo|| blades are constructed of double skin galvanized steel or heavy gauge extruded aluminum. This
blade design presents a lower resistance to airflow and strength that is typically used in high pressure
systems. Airfoi| b|ades are standard on mode|s VCD-33, 33V, 34, 40, 42, 42V, 43, 43V and SEVCD-33.
Parallel Versus Opposed Blade Operation
Greenheck contro| dampers are offered with either para||e| or opposed b|ades. Each
style has distinguishing characteristics in regard to the type of operation required.
Parallel blade operation - This configuration requires the damper b|ades to rotate in
the same direction, para||e| to one another. Para||e| b|ade orientation is typica||y used
when the damper operates in two positions, open or close.
Opposed blade operation - Adjacent damper blades will rotate opposite one another
under opposed blade configuration. Opposed blade configuration is typically used on
dampers that modulate airflow.

Design and Construction
Features
Frame
Specifically designed for installation inside ductwork, Greenheck control dampers utilize a
5 in. x 1 in. (127mm x 25mm} hat channe| frame made of 16 ga. (1.5mm} stee| or 0.125 in.
(3mm} a|uminum. Each frame is bui|t with four separate pieces of materia| and [oined by our
Tog-L-Loc

process with the following advantages:

Rigid frame - When two pieces of 16 ga. (1.5mm} stee| are [oined by the Tog-L-Loc

system, the [oint has an equiva|ent thickness of 10 ga. (3.5mm} stee|.
Increased corrosion resistance -The high temperatures from welding will remove the
ga|vanized finish from damper frames. As the Tog-L-Loc

process doesn't use heat,

Greenheck damper frames have greater corrosion resistance by retaining the galvanized coating.
Optimal free area - On a|| dampers that are 17 in. (432mm} high or |ess, Greenheck uses a |ow profi|e top
and bottom frame section to maximize free area.
Square frame - Many damper manufacturers construct each frame from a single piece of sheet metal,
formed into shape by bending at three corners and spot welding in one. This type of construction can
produce weak corners that are not necessari|y 90, resu|ting in a frame that is out of square. Symptoms of
out-of-square frames inc|ude b|ades that do not c|ose proper|y and reduced |eakage performance. Using
four separate frame components (top, bottom, and two sides}, Greenheck's Tog-L-Loc

process results
in four sturdy, 90 [oints. This ensures that each Greenheck damper is square and provides optimum
performance in the field.

Design and Construction
Features
Damper assemblies (larger than one section) are not designed to be structurally self-supporting. Additional horizontal bracing is
recommended to support the weight of the damper and vertical bracing should be installed if required to hold against system pressure.
Multi-Section Dampers
Each of Greenheck's VCD contro| dampers have a maximum size for a sing|e damper section or pane|.
These sections vary from 48 in. x 60 in. (1219mm x 1524mm} to 60 in. x 74 in. (1524mm x 1880mm}.
Dampers larger than a single section will be made up of equal size sections which, depending upon model
and size, may be shipped as a single complete assembly or as separate sections for field assembly.
Most mu|ti-section damper assemb|ies are supp|ied with a factory insta||ed [ackshaft so a|| sections
operate together. Mode|s VCD-15 and VCD-18 uti|ize a fie|d-insta||ed crossover bracket to connect
adjacent sections.
Factory Insta||ed Jackshaft Fie|d Insta||ed Crossover Bracket
No Top or Bottom
Greenheck's contro| dampers are designed for insta||ation in any
position with the blades horizontal. As shown in the drawing at
the right, the damper can be turned over so the actuator is on
the left or right side.
Linkage
Traditional damper linkages are found in the airstream, adding to the pressure drop of the
damper blades and frame. Greenheck control dampers have blade linkage concealed in the
frame to prevent additiona| pressure drop. With standard p|ated stee| construction (stain|ess
stee| optiona|}, the |inkage is engineered to accurate|y contro| each and every b|ade without
need for adjustment.

Accessories
Transitions
Greenheck control dampers can be supplied with the appropriate
transition option in applications where dampers require
insta||ation in round or ova| openings. Rectangu|ar dampers are
constructed 0, 1 inch (25mm}, or 2 inches (51mm} |arger than the
dimensions provided and installed in a factory sleeve. The sleeve
is transitioned at each end to the appropriate round, oval, or
rectangular size.

One Piece Retaining Angles
Greenheck's one piece retaining ang|e, the POC (|itera||y named for being
a "Piece of Cake"} makes contro| damper insta||ation a breeze. The POC
angle is designed by riveting four pieces together at the corners to form
one piece. When insta||ed the ang|e simp|y wraps around the s|eeve of
the damper and fastens in place.

Open Close Indicator - OCI
The OCI option provides two switches to indicate damper position. One
set of contacts close when the damper blades are at their open position
and the other set to close when the damper blades are at their closed
position. The switches are physically linked to a damper blade and
therefore give a true representation of the damper'sposition.

Pressure drop testing was conducted in accordance with AMCA Standard 500-D using the three
configurations shown. All data has been corrected to represent standard air at a density of
.075 |b/ft
3
(1.2 kg/m
3
}.
Actual pressure drop found in any HVAC system is a combination of many factors. This pressure drop
information along with an analysis of other system influences should be used to estimate actual pressure
losses for a damper installed in a given HVAC system.
Figure 5.3 Illustrates a fully ducted damper. This configuration has the lowest pressure drop of the three
test configurations because entrance and exit losses are minimized by straight duct runs upstream and
downstream of the damper.
Figure 5.2 Illustrates a ducted damper exhausting air into an open area. This configuration has a lower
pressure drop than Figure 5.5 because entrance |osses are minimized by a straight duct run upstream of
the damper.
Figure 5.5 Illustrates a plenum mounted damper. This configuration has the highest pressure drop because
of extremely high entrance and exit losses due to the sudden changes of area in the system.

Air Measuring Products
Airflow measuring products are used to accurately measure and control air. Applications include meeting
the minimum outdoor air requirements of ASHRAE Standard 62 or Ca|ifornia Tit|e 24 by providing accurate
monitoring and control of outside air.
There are many signicant benets to monitoring outside air vo|umes. First, by measuring the amount of outside
air coming into a building you can be assured that the building is in compliance with all applicable indoor air
qua|ity codes inc|uding ASHRAE Standard 62 and Ca|ifornia Tit|e 24. Meeting these minimum requirements
reduces indoor airborne viruses and bacteria which can |ead to Sick Bui|ding Syndrome. Studies have shown
that inhabitants in buildings that are under ventilated suffer from reduced productivity levels.
The second major advantage to monitoring outside air volumes is that it eliminates costly over ventilation. In
addition to increased energy costs associated with heating and cooling of outside air, over ventilation causes
an increase in humidity that can result in mold development.
Why is outside air measurement important?
The AMS is an accurate airflow measuring station
and is furnished with a properly sized pressure
transducer that outputs a signal proportional to
cfm. The AMS is compatible with a field supplied
contro||er or a factory supp|ied LON contro||er (so|d
separate|y} that uses a signa| to position a damper
to the airflow required.
AMD series dampers were developed as a low
cost a|ternative to the IAQ-42 damper. Many contro|
contractors |ike to use their own contro||ers. Fie|d
supplied controllers for the AMD dampers are very
easy to program. A large label on every AMD damper
shows the contro|s contractor everything they'|| need
to program their own contro||er. A factory-supp|ied
controller is also available.
The AMD series comes standard with a modulating
actuator and a properly sized pressure transducer
that outputs a signal proportional to cfm. A field
supp|ied contro||er can use the transducer's signa|
a|ong with the f|ow formu|a (provided} to regu|ate a
modu|ating actuator to the target set-point.
The AMD series is also available with a factory
supplied LON controller that accepts a target flow
