Type of Work: Indy Product: Doc/Embedded Class Time: Period EOC: Embed/Snip (Lesson 6) Due: Next Period
Concept: Below are some of the most recent developments related to reproductive health in our society. Your job will be to provide an analysis of these developments. As we discussed in the beginning of the unit sex ed is a values driven topic. These issues are inherently controversial themselves because although there are facts that may help you understand them ultimately you see these facts through the prism of your own perception (values, morals, upbringing, etc.). The sources listed are just a starting point, remember that any information may be biased and it is your job as an educated consumer to carefully analyze information for validity, reliability, and bias. Goal: Provide an analysis of the recent developments in reproductive health demonstrating an understanding of content specific information necessary to understand each issue (ie. What strains are protected against in the HPV vaccine, approved locations for the Safe Haven law).

Topic 1: The HPV Vaccine Debate

Information Necessary to Understand Topic
Basic Overview:

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the United States. Many parents arent sure if they should allow their kids to take the vaccine because it can cause some harmful side effects, but the vaccine also protects against a common STD.
What it Does Protect Against: 1.Protects against Cancer 2. prevent anal carcinoma and anal dysplasia 3. prevents infection with the human papillomavirus % of Cervical Cancer Protection: What it Doesnt Protect (Think!): 1.Aids 2.Pregnancy 3. Herpies % of Genital Wart Protection:

400 men who get HPV-related cancer of the penis

How Many Shots: three shots over six months

About 1% of sexually active men in the U.S. have genital warts at any one time.
Is there a shot for boys? What is it called? Yes it is called Gardasil

2. severe neurological problems 3. Guillain-Barre Syndrome -

Does this promote promiscuity or should we take advantage of something that could potentially help us?

Cost: retail price of either vaccine is about $130 per dose ($390 for full series).

I believe that more people will be involved in sex if they have the vaccine shot, but I think that we should take advantage because it can prevent HPV. Why create this vaccine if society didnt want to have sex? This vaccine was created to protect us, not to prevent us from having sex.

Some people believe that ECPs should not be allowed because they prevent pregnancy, youre preventing nature.
Intended Use (Why people use it): They use it to prevent pregnancies from happening. How close to failed / no contraceptives: (Time Frame?)

about 8 in 100 women who have unprotected sex one time during the fertile part of their cycle will become pregnant. If these 100 women take ECPs about 1 will become pregnant. The sooner you use ECP the better chance you will have to prevent the pregnancy.

With ECPs, higher doses of the same hormones found in regular birth control pills stop pregnancy by keeping the egg from leaving the ovary or keeping the sperm from joining the egg.

Does this promote people not taking accountability for their choices or provide an alternative to someone not wanting to get pregnant?

I think some people will abuse this pill and treat it as a non-emergency pill but I also think more people will use it as a plan B pill.

Level 5: How is this similar/different than the abortion pill (RU-486)?

Topic 3: The Condom Availability Debate

Information Necessary to Understand Topic

Potential Sources

Basic Overview: Some schools are considering having condoms available in school. But the debate is whether or not it will provide unhealthy sexual behavior of the handed out condoms.

Provide one stat on teen pregnancy. Provide one stat on teen pregnancy. The Carnegie Council on Adolescent Fifty-three percent of high school Development reported 17% of girls and 29% of students in the US reported having had boys engaging in sexual intercourse by age 16 sexual intercourse (Singer 1994). Yes, some teens dont realize the true toll that teens can suffer from an unintended pregnancy or an STD.

3. schools would have to also provide substance abuse medications to help prevent addiction, overdoses, and subsequent social disorder -

What does a schools condom availability program look like? Who gets condoms, where, when and how? Condoms will be provided in vending machines and by nurses, most schools will charge for condoms. Any students who need a condom or condoms will have the right to obtain a condom according to various schools.

So the big question is how would condom availability affect the student body? Does it promote unhealthy behavior or are you providing a healthy outlet for those that will do it anywaysif so is it even a schools place to get involved ?

I believe that schools shouldnt provide condoms because it will just promote sexual activity. On the other hand some kids will do it anyway so it might be a good idea to provide condoms.

Level 5/Extra Credit/Going Beyond: What does your research say/cite? Do condoms make a difference? Cite at least 1 study and the results.
