Accessing information through the Town will now come at a charge after a new bylaw was passed at the May 15 regular council meeting. The new bylaw will see people paying $8.85 per quarter hour, or $35.40 per hour to have FOIP (Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act) information pulled. (For a) FOIP request generally you have to pull files and you have to go through each individual page of that file to take anything out that cant be released due to FOIP, said Jennifer Sawatzky, FOIP coordinator for the town. If someone is just coming in for general information were not going to charge them for that, but if its something that has to be filed under FOIP then thats when it would apply. The fee was taken from within the salary range of the municipal clerk because they would be the one gathering the information. Strathmore is not the first community to charge a fee to collect FOIP information. Its typical in most communities that they do charge a fee for gathering information, its just to cover staffs time for doing it. It really depends on the size of the request, some requests can take 10 minutes but some requests can take days, so its really to cover that cost, said Sawatzky. The new bylaw was discussed because of the municipal election coming up. Chief Administrative Officer for the Town Dwight Stanford said that before the last election there were a lot of man hours that went into finding information requested. At the last election we had to gather information for the public and it was over $20,000 worth of staff time getting the material, said Stanford. Much of the information requested three years ago was for financial records, which took several weeks to gather. I really am impressed and I like this idea because asstated earlier in the last election campaign there were a lot of requests and information searched by our town staff, and I dont think a lot of people realize how much money that costs, and how much time that costs the staff and administration, said Councillor Pat Fule. Sacred Heart plans to add Superman to their playground

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Parents, students, and staff at Sacred Heart Academy have been busy fundraising for a new expansion to their playground. The wooden structure that is currently in place at the fondly named gathering grounds will be completely replaced with a new $120,000 Superman structure. Its called the gathering grounds at our school because of where its located, so there is actually quite a bit of community use that happens there, said Christa Aleman, a member of the playground organizing committee. The people that originally started our school 10 years ago, they put the playground in, they worked very, very hard and they called it the gathering ground 10 years ago, and we just feel like thats a really suitable name for the park. Its great for the kids but its a great place for the community as well. Fundraising has been underway within the school for a few months now, having kicked off with the sales of candy grams for Valentines Day. Were at about $40,000 now, so were in a really steady state of raising money. Our goal ideally would be to have the structure up by next spring, operational by this time of year next year, said Aleman. On June 6 at dusk there is going to be a Movie Under The Stars night, put on by FreshAirCinema, to help raise funds for the project, and to showcase the gathering grounds. There will be a BBQ for dinner beginning at 6 p.m. and there will be face painting and airbrush tattoos to keep the kids entertained, when they arent playing on the current playground equipment. Tickets for the movie are $5 per person or $20 family. The cost of the BBQ is separate from the movie tickets.

Me-to-We Water Walk

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Last Wednesday, May 15, students at Strathmore High School (SHS) were simulating someone elses life. Callista Weiss, Payton Berger, Joel Cooper, Alex Bird, Alicia George, Shayne Salmon, Alyssa Lavallee volunteered to carry one to two gallons of water with them all day long, to experience what women in Kenya have to do to get fresh water for their families. Women often carry water for seven or eight hours a day. Ours was just a demonstration of what they go through every day, said Cooper. It was a bit of a burden. It was awkward juggling your books and binders and everything. You realize that the women in Kenya have to do this for a much longer time, so you push through it, thinking I can suck it up and do this, said George. The walk is inspired by the Free the Children organization and Spencer Wests We Walk 4Water campaign. Spencer, who lost his legs at the age of five, is best known for his accomplishments of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on his hands, but also raises funds for international charity and youth empowerment organizations. West held a charity walk, Edmonton to Calgary, from May 6 to 16. For pictures of the event and more information see: http://www.freethec h i l d r e n . c o m / g e t - i n vo l ve d / c a mpaigns/we-walk-4water/ While SHS students couldnt participate in Wests walk, they held their own a fundraiser with funds going toward a supply of clean drinking water for the small community of Osenetoi,

Kenya in Africa. The students said that they would like to have the opportunity to help others again, or travel internationally and be involved in hands on projects. To date, through the past school year, the Me to We Club at SHS has raised approximately $4,000 through events like the water walk, the benefit concert, and the penny drive. Anyone wishing to help them out can make donations to the Me to We Club at SHS, including spare change and pennies. Direct donations can also be made to Free the Children on behalf of the school. There are still hand-made rafiki bracelets on sale for $10 each. The $10 is enough to feed one child in Kenya for a month, and helps support alternative income projects by Kenyan women.

Clean-up karma
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Students from Crowther Memorial Junior High took up rakes and drills on May 17, to clean up the access path running from Brent Boulevard into the Brentwood community. The path was littered with leaves and garbage, and some of the fence boards were rotten or had graffiti written on them. Tyler Brassard, busy with a rake, said the activity was part of building karma. He knew it was true, as karma had recently brought him luck, generated by his decision to be honest. Karma in Indian religions is the concept of an action or deed, which causes the entire cycle of cause and effect. Just yesterday I found 20 dollars on the ground. I picked it up and brought it to the office and in return I got canteen dollars, said Brassard. Sometimes youth are blamed for thoughtless actions, but they also contribute to a lot of community events and fundraisers. This spontaneous clean-up is one more example of their karmic contribution to the Strathmore community. The kids wanted to have a better reputation and we wanted our school to get involved, said Assistant Principal Colin Lenox. This is the greatest way to do it.

When you eat a meal, it takes about 4 hours for the food to move into the large intestine. Some people say that some foods give them gas. This gas is formed in the large intestine so that bowl of chili you had for lunch could be causing you gas at supper. Teen acne can be an embarrassing problem but it can be treated. Seeing the doctor may not be necessary at first. Gently washing the skin with mild soap and water and applying non-prescription lotions may be all thats needed. Kinsmen Park paving price increases

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The pathway around Kinsmen Park is on the schedule to be paved in time for the Canada Day celebrations. Originally, as part of the 2012 Towns Pathway Development Plan, a capital budget was approved for $140,000. The original company who had the lowest bid from the tender process, which was under the $140,000 mark, withdrew their name from consideration prior to the May 15 regular town council meeting. G&V Paving and Contracting Ltd. put in the second lowest bid at $154,800. We did see an increase in the tender this year based on our tendering from last year, said Jesse Parker, director of engineering and operations for the town. (Well be) building the pathway to the same quality as our tender along the Thomas Drive pathway, but weve seen our cost go up fairly considerably Id say, about 30% over our cost from last year. So as a result it didnt come in asanticipated through the budget process. The Town doesnt have previous experience with G&V Paving and Contracting Ltd. but Parker feels they have a good understanding of the project, and the references he has contacted have also come back positive. The entire pathway will have a horizontal root barrier, which is the same as the Thomas Drive pathway. In the areas within close proximity to the trees there will also be a vertical root barrier to help prevent any cracks in the pavement with weeds or roots pushing through. Parker requested a change in the budget for the project. The request for $170,000 will add a 10% contingency in case any unforeseen circumstances come up. Council approved the new funding amount, which is not to exceed $170,000. Stormwater initiative Since last year, the town has been a part of the Regional Stormwater Initiative with the Western Irrigation District (WID) and other regional municipalities. Parker said the main focus for the town is on a south drainage plan to Eagle Lake and then future north drainage as well. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was brought forward which summarizes the commitment of the partners working collaboratively on a regional stormwater solution. The request was for the town to sign it, and also to approve funding in the amount of $50,000 for a technical Request For Proposal (RFP) to help determine the feasibility of a future solution and the preliminary design of a stormwater solution for the entire town. The funds come from the WID/Town of Strathmore Joint Stormwater Fund, which requires the approval of both parties to access and will not affect taxpayers. Council approved the requests.

Ash Girl
Strathmore High Drama 20/30 presented Ash Girl written by Timberlake Wertenbaker on May 13-16. The play was based off the Cinderella Story and held the important life messages of listening to your heart, living with the decisions you have made as well as with the smallest spark of hope you can overcome. Paula Richardson choose this play because it gave more students the opportunity of stage time and for her was one of the most technical plays she has ever directed. The cast was amazing, the costumes perfect and the set was engaging, they played to a packed theater every night.

Human remains found near Indus

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Human remains were found on a rural property on May 13 when the landowner was cleaning up his property for spring. The remains were found near Indus at Range Road 275 and Township Road 232. We dont know what the manner of death is, that will be something that the Medical Examiner will work to determine. However, at this point we simply have human remains, said Sgt. Patricia Neely, media spokeswoman with the RCMP during a media conference on May 14. Our goal at this point really is to identify these remains and try to get some closure for the family members who are possibly missing a loved one. Neely said it is too early to determine how long the bones have been there, but added that an anthropologist is examining them as well. The RCMP Special Tactical Operations Team, with the assistance of the Foothills Search and Rescue team did a search of the field to ensure all possible evidence was recovered. Were still waiting for the medical examiner and the anthropologist, said Neely, who didnt have any new answers as of press time.

Over the past eight months, Wheatland County has been developing an update to its Municipal Development Plan (MDP). The MDP is a long range planning document that includes a vision, goals, objecves and policies to guide growth and development in the County over the next 30 years. The current MDP is being updated to ensure it follows the Countys current strategic direcons and recent provincial inives such as the Land Use Framework and Water for Life Strategy. At this point in the project we would like to present the new themes, objecves and key policies to all County residents, business owners, and various stakeholders to ensure they follow your vision of the County. Dont let your kids acquire nature deficit disorder

Rick Bayer Camp Chestermere Four words that todays children will almost never hear are: go outside and play. For children born after 1980, their play worlds are constrained and contained with little direct experience of the natural world. In fact, many of todays kids can tell you all about the Amazon Rainforest because of a school project they did on it. They however are unable to articulate their own experiences with an Alberta forest or the weed lot down the street or poking a stick in a pond. Kids today want to play indoors because that is where the screens are, and screens tend to dominate our lives. In fact my 11-year-old daughter just yesterday said, Dad, were becoming one of those families. When I queried what she meant, she pointed out that her and her sister were on their iPods, I was on my laptop, and my wife was on her iPad. Sigh. Its a sad day when screens have become so dominant and the research indicating how kids brains are being rewired as a result of this is intensely frightening. Is it time for us parents to allow kids to just be kids? Thomas Berry said that teaching children about the natural world should be treated as one of the most important events in their lives. With summer coming and no school, so many kids will increase their screen time exponentially. Could this summer be different for your kids or grandkids? So many parents are fearful of the outdoors. We want to shelter our kids from bugs, spiders, and frogs. But this disconnect from nature has produced all sorts of consequences such as lack of creativity, ignorance of nature, childhood obesity, depression, and loss of community. Is it time to consider sending your child to summer camp for a week to help them overcome this disconnect from nature? Overall camp attendance in North America is in decline as parents choose other options for summer plans. Getting your kids out in nature presents lots of benefits to them. Being in creation reminds them that a Creator exists. Getting out in nature will remind your kids that God loves variety. The Psalmist marvelled, O God what a variety you have made. You made them all. (Psalm 104:24 Living Bible). Let your kid bend over and peer into the intricacies of a beetle. There are over 300,000 varieties of beetles which led biologist JB Haldane to say, God must have an inordinate fondness for beetles. Richard Louv who coined the phrase that I used in the title of this article, says; Healing the broken bond between our young and nature is in our self-interest, not only because aesthetics or justice demand it, but also because our mental, physical, and spiritual health depends on it. The health of the earth is at stake. May this be a summer where your kids get outside! (Pastor Rick Bayer hangs out at Camp Chestermere. He can be reached at campdirector@ campchestermere.com.)

School Daze II
Pat Fule Fule for Thought Its been 30 years since I first began teaching here in Strathmore. In that time, I have seen many teaching philosophies come and go, as well as technological advancements. I remember being called in to a conference to see a new electronic device hooked to the phone system that would send and receive messages in minutes. This seemed amazing to me, and I thought it would be a great way to communicate faster. Who knew that the fax machine could also become a danger in the workplace? One school day, one of my colleagues was learning to use this fax machine. It was kept in one of the rooms just off the Main Office. The office staff heard a scream of terror, and a lot of scuffling noises. The poor guy had gotten his tie caught in the machine, and it was pulling the tie and HIM into it! With quick thinking, one of the secretaries ran back for scissors, and snipped off his tie just under his collar! He was saved, and he avoided that fax machine for a LONG time! Each school year, schools have their ParentTeacher Interviews so that students and parents can discuss progress (or lack of) in the various subjects! Many years ago, at SHS, all teachers would be given a sheet with columns, so that we could write down the parents names and their child. This was to be a way to track the interviews. Now that was in theory, because sometimes Interview Night can be quite dead, especially in the Spring when the Flames are in the playoffs (I told you it was a long time ago!). Well, we hardly had any parents, and I got bored. This is a bad thing, because I thought it would be humorous to write down bogus names as a joke. So for example, I would write the last name Hun, check off Mr. and Mrs., then Id add Atilla as the kid. I thought this was kind of witty, and kept adding: Mr. and Mrs. Presley, their son Elvis and so on! I thought I had peaked when I brought in my old Catholic past I wrote Mr. then God, followed by his son, Jesus. Hilarious stuff, right? Well pretty soon, some of the other staff were adding their own funny parents/kids, and even started their own sheets! It wasnt anything to do with a protest of any kind we just thought it was funny. The next morning, I found a memo that read: Id like to see you about wasting taxpayers money on Interview Night. First, I was mortified then I got angry! I had caught up on my marking, there were virtually no parents TO do interviews with, and the closer I got to my first class break, the angrier I got! I rehearsed what I was going to say, I even told some of my colleagues, and marched toward an administrators office. I was going to have my day in court! Just before I stormed in, a teacher pal stopped me, and said whatever you do in there, let him speak first. It was everything I could do to stay silent, as he began to talk, and I was still practicing my inner reply, when I heard him say it was all a joke, and that a few of my pals were in on it! So many emotions hit me: relief, embarrassment, shock, and I laughed out loud. They had gotten me, and I NEVER fooled around in Interviews again in fact I found that sometimes when youre trying to do your best, you can also screw up! The night in question was actually a busy one, and I was dealing with a lot of interviews. Sometimes, with all the students a teacher has, you CAN get mixed up! I was doing great, and I was praising a boy to his father. It was awesome to see how he lit up; he was so happy and he even beamed with pride. After he left, I also felt very positive about it. Then, later in the evening, another dad came in. As I looked at his sons marks, I realized I had read the AWESOME comments to the dad of one of my problem students. That kid had been disruptive in my class and others, and he rarely change for PE! It was no wonder his dad almost cried tears of joy I mightve been the only positive interview he had all night! I kicked myself for getting the two kids mixed up, but then I thought, huh, maybe this will get him out of some trouble at home maybe itll inspire him, maybe THIS will be that ONE moment, that helps him become a better student AND person! It turns out it didnt, but the kid probably had a good evening those many years ago, and his dad WAS pretty happy! (Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule. Early Canadian Bank of Commerce

Bob Giles Times Contributor The Royal Bank has completed its move to the new shopping center location; this is the first time in more than 100 years a bank has not been located on at least one of the corners of Strathmores 2nd Ave and 2nd St. The Royal followed the path of the Alberta Treasury Bank Branch. The accompanying photo shows a somewhat different view of early downtown Strathmore until recently occupied as a newspaper office, and across 2nd Street from the previous downtown Royal Bank location. The building on the right, a Canadian Bank of Commerce structure, is similar in design and appearance to that of the Union Bank building. Little can be determined as to when the Commerce building was erected, but it was after 1910 and well before 1920. And yes, it was constructed on the same location as that of the previous downtown Royal Bank. Where We Crossed the Creek and Settled, Rockyfords history book, shows the above photo taken in Strathmore and featuring the Canadian Bank of Commerce on the corner in the foreground. Why the Rockyford history book? Because Rockyford is where the Commerce building has been located since being relocated from Strathmore. Rockyfords history book tells us The Canadian Bank of Commerce opened for business in Rockyford on May 18, 1914 with a staff of six. In 1916 the Bank closed its Strathmore branch and physically moved the present building from Strathmore to Rockyfords Main Street. To accomplish the move, the building was split in half and two 12-horse teams were employed to transport the two sections on rollers to Rockyford. Considering the lack of serviceable roads at this time, the magnitude of the project can be readily appreciated, the article concludes. The Canadian Bank of Commerce was established in 1867 and merged with the Imperial Bank of Commerce, established in 1875, becoming the CIBC in 1961. The CIBC closed its Rockyford Branch on August 12, 2011. The building was recently sold and is presently being renovated for a commercial main level and residential upstairs, reverting to the original design when the manager or a senior staff member occupied the upstairs apartment. Getting back to St r a th mo r e, other than the addition of the living space above the vault in 1969, the old Union/Royal Bank building remained basically as it was when constructed and occupied in early March 1910. The Union Bank first arrived in Strathmore in the summer or early fall of 1908, when it rented space down Main Street (now Veterans Way) in the King Edward Hotel. This is on the site of the new Hussar Credit Union building. In the early 1900s, rapid expansion and scarcity of local labour and materials in the Prairies made it difficult to build the type of solid and classic buildings both the Union and Canadian Bank of Commerce wanted for their branches. Prefabricated structures solved this problem. The CIBC website indicates three different Commerce models were designed and each branch was pre-fabricated and pre-painted in Vancouver. I believe there was only one Union Bank design, which is the vacant heritage building and presently listed for sale. Both banks models were similar structures, although they featured different windows, pillars and minor exterior changes. The prefab bank kits were shipped to towns in two rail cars and were assembled in two days. Between 1905 and 1911 about 70 of these Commerce branches were built across the west. The former CIBC bank in Gleichen is another example, with that building now housing the communitys library. The Union Bank of Canada enjoyed the distinction of being the first bank to provide an extensive branch system throughout the Prairie provinces and was frequently referred to as the pioneer bank of Western Canada. It was often the first and only bank in a locality. The bank began in Quebec City in 1865 as the Union Bank of Lower Canada, but changed its name in 1886. Its headquarters were moved to Winnipeg in 1912. By the time of the Royal and Union banks merger, the Union Bank had developed a network of 320 Canadian branches of which 204 were located in the Prairies. Back in Strathmore, the Union Banks basement (including reenforced concrete vaults on both levels) was in place when the two boxcars arrived at the CPR station, located where the Seniors Centre and Library are now found, and the building was erected in two long days. The four, six and eight foot panels and beams were all pre-numbered with holes drilled to facilitate their placement when they were bolted together. The old bank building served as the Union Bank until September 1, 1925, when it was absorbed by the Royal Bank. According to RBC, this amalgamation was the last of Royal Banks Canadian Bank mergers, a move that further enhanced the Banks business connections in the Prairie Provinces as mentioned above. The Royal Bank continued operations in Union Bank building until 1969 when it moved across the street. The Canadian Bank of Commerce building would have had an identical construction history as the Union Bank building, but I can hardly imagine how the structure was split in half and relocated to Rockyford. According to a Nov./Dec. 2006 Heritage Vancouver Newsletter, the B.C. Mills Timber and Trading Co. in Vancouver not only manufactured prefab houses, but also prefab school, church, and bank kits. The prefab bank kit was actually their biggest seller, and the Bank of Commerce was one of their best customers. BC Mills prefab kits came with plain panels, panels with doors, and panels with windows. The designs were ingenious. Unlike other prefabs in that era, which had a reputation of being hard to heat, drafty, and insubstantial, BC Mills panels featured weather-tight joints and an innovative insulated design made with two layers of wood separated with tarpaper and an air space, so they were well equipped to withstand the cold of Prairie winters. Also, the BC Mills panels were assembled and pre-painted in a dry indoor space, in the Vancouver factory, before being shipped to the building site. BC Mills shipped prefab kits all over western Canada and as far east as Winnipeg, but as innovative as the B.C. Mills prefab house design was, the company overestimated the homesteader market and failed to take into account the fact that most of the settlers were dirt poor and, as much as they would have liked to, most couldnt afford to purchase prefab homes, the Heritage Vancouver article commented.

Local couples participate in Calgary Humane Society Dog Jog

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter We never want to hear about cruelty to animals, its a topic that gets many peoples blood boiling, but it is also something that happens more than we would like to believe. Organizations like the Calgary Humane Society (CHS) are instrumental in protecting the animals, and though they may not get there in time every time, it is a place where the animals can heal and learn to trust again. Like many organizations the society thrives off of donations and volunteers in order to help the thousands of animals through its doors each year. Kristel Lang and her boyfriend Will Bennett, along with two other local couples, will be walking in this years Calgary Humane Societys Dog Jog on June 2. The Dog Jog is an annual fundraising walk and festival thats held at Glenmore Park in Calgary. Participants in the Dog Jog have the option of either doing 2.5 km, or completing a 5 km jog. Lang and her team will be doing the 5km jog, and they are hoping to raise $1,000 for the CHS. They will be collecting donations until race day, and on June 1 there will be a garage sale fundraiser as part of the Strathmore Parade of Garage Sales. Lang and Bennett have been fostering dogs for over a year now with Prairie Pit Bull. We decided to foster while our dog Tia was still alive but decided to wait because she was so old and we didnt want that much disruption in the house. After she passed last March (2012) we contacted Prairie Pit Bull, went to talk with them and took our first foster home, said Lang. We loved it, though (it was) difficult at times, and really enjoyed that we were helping dogs. We decided to foster because of our love for dogs and the ability to help the dogs so they werent put down or have to live in a shelter while waiting to be adopted. Though it can be tough to see the dog youve raised as your own walk out of your door one day, it is also a rewarding feeling knowing that you helped them in some way. The reward is internal gratification that we are helping a dog who cannot help itself. The dogs come from many different situations and some would not have survived if a foster home wasnt available to take them in and work with them, said Lang. Lang and Bennett fostered nine dogs before having a foster failure. Lacey was the ninth foster pit bull for the two through Prairie Pit Bull. They fell in love and knew there was no way they could give Lacey up, and so in September 2012 they officially adopted her. When the couple began to foster Lacey when Lana was three months pregnant, and Lacey could sense right away that something was going on. The further along in her pregnancy she become the more attentive and gentle Lacey was with Lang. After returning home from the hospital with Kaylee she was instantly attached. She is so incredibly gentle with her and often sniffs her while she sleeps in her swing, said Lang. Kaylee has smacked Lacey in the face numerous times, poked her, grabbed her ears and she just sits, tail wagging. She used to be super excited when we came home but now the first thing she wants to do is sniff the car seat. Will and I knew that we wanted to rescue a new dog before Kaylee was born so that we could bond with the dog and so that Kaylee could grow up with a dog. The two chose pit bulls because thats what Langs dad had until she was three, and she has often heard how amazing the dog did with her. Bennett and his dog were the best of friends growing up, and its a bond they want their child to grow up with. I think that as long as an animal knows its boundaries with the child it can work. Anyone who would like to donate can go to the Calgary Humane Society website and search Langs name under Dog Jog.

WFCSS gets festive

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor A robust letter campaign to Wheatland Family and Community Support Services (WFCSS) held a well-attended, festive open house, set in Wheatland County Council Chambers on May11. They were welcoming the community in and giving a grand send off to some valued staff members. The council chamber was transformed with spring colored table settings, festive balloons and a tempting buffet of appetisers and desserts. Thank you for being here today and helping us move through a new stage of our journey, said Lynn Walker, program coordinator. She outlined the some of the many service programs which help Wheatland residents in need. As an example, she said a few seniors had been in the office seeking help filling out forms for their old age pensions. She mentioned there are a lot of programs that benefit seniors and the whole community. A partnership between the County of Wheatland, Rockyford, Standard and Hussar has been formed to address needs in those municipalities. A needs survey was developed and sent out with the County tax forms. She encouraged people to return the forms. We feel it will give us valuable information about the community needs and it is a chance for residents to come in at the grass roots level with suggestions for programs in the area, said Walker. There were gifts and presentations given to honour employees who were leaving. Susan Gates, Branka Kuljanin and Sharon Tibeau. Tibeau was the previous Program Coordinator for 17 years and worked with the agency for 24 years. We have such a good team here, said Walker. We are more like a family and a team. It was a joy to come to work every day, but I am looking forward to the next new fun phase of my life, said Tibeau. Kuljinan and Gates received wrapped gifts and Tibeau received a patio bench set to enjoy in her retirement. Board Vice Chair, Ron Corbiell stood and thanked the County councillors and staff for making those involved with WFCSS welcome and accommodating their office needs. He tracked the WFCSS office from its first office in Standard, moving to the Town of Strathmore office, then to where Getz law office is now situated, another move into the building next to the library in Strathmore and finally WFCSS taking a home in the County office. It was bantered that Tibeau would be well prepared for any travelling she would do in retirement. We want to sincerely thank for all your years of service and hope that you enjoy your times off, said Corbiell.

I am my brothers keeper
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Last week, on May 17, Strathmore High School (SHS) students listened to Jean-Claude Munyezamus life account of the genocide in Rwanda, Africa. He recounted the lessons he learned from his experience. Genocide is not something that can be explained in words. There is no way to describe it so someone can understand. I can only give them lessons by sharing the story as it happened to me, said Munyezamu. In the early 1990s, Rwanda experienced political unrest and poor economic conditions leading to food shortages. There was political upheaval, back room injections from external political influences, leading to several political assassinations. By 1994, conditions were in place so that an extremist paramilitary organization could brutally murder over one million people in 100 days. The Rwandan people were killed because they had a Tutsi tribal heritage or association. Some people with Hutu heritage were also slaughtered, for their moderate beliefs. The murderers recruited people to participate, and all of it was backed by the reigning government officials. The population spoke the same language; there were no real physical differences, and many shared religious beliefs. Munyezamu was born in Rwanda, but left for Kenya in his early 20s. His absence left him alive today. He returned to Rwanda shortly after the 1994 killings happened, to find two brothers, his sister, many cousins, aunts and uncles gone. He tried to explain the desolation of losing your whole family and whole country to that kind of violence to young people, whose closest connection to killing may be a video game or television news. Usually there are people chatting all over the place. Everyone was interested and respectful, said SHS student Alyssa LaVallee, describing the silent gym. Calgary has just over one million people and Munyezamu said to imagine walking into it with no one left alive. Strathmore has just over ten thousand, and that many people were killed each day for one hundred days. He said it is like looking at the words on a menu. You comprehend the words but have no understanding until you sample the food. He speaks of his experience, so no one will ever taste the word genocide again. We have no problem in sharing the stories, we learn by the telling of stories and our imagination grows by hearing the stories. To some it is just statistics and just a storyone million people die. But when they speak to someone who was there, someone who says that they took my two brothers, one sister, my aunties and cousinsthen they have names and families. It is good for them to have that connection. It is very important. Human beings are all capable of doing harm, said Munyezamu. SHS student Joel Cooper agreed. After hearing how easily things can happen, it made you think whether it could happen in Canada or the U.S., said Cooper. It was a small country, where everyone knew each other and suddenly their neighbours are trying to kill them, even though they knew them for a long timeall because of perfect propaganda going around. Munyezamu told them that genocide is not just the consequence of war. It started subtly, influenced by misused words, and inaction by people and international leaders. Ethnic divisions turned into ethnic slurs. Power struggles turned into domination and discrimination, leading to deadly consequences. It began by dividing the people into tribes. It was very artificial. A few people at the top, were

using this for their own gains, setting brother against brother, until they became enemies. They were taught growing up in the school. They (Tutsi) were given names of cockroaches. People tend to believe what they see all the time. I think people believed that killing Tutsis was not even a problem. Sixty per cent of the people believed that was right, so it was easy to accomplish that, said Munyezamu. He said leaders would use propaganda language and redefine words. Many of the people had little education and believed what they were told. When they sent men out to work, the word meant killing and dismembering Tutsi people. He said people denied they were Tutsi to protect themselves. They did not stand up against the evil that was happening around them. They compromised their values. If you dont stand up and face up to someone doing bad, because you dont think someone will do it, or it doesnt happen to me, there are consequences, said Munyezamu. SHS student Shaynne Salmon said that if it happened to her she would be so angry. She valued the speech, as it showed how he coped with that anger and gave her insight into the situation. It made us aware of it and that it could happen in any place. We have the power to stop it. He said that the week before, they were celebrating Easter and everyone was happy and fine. Ignorance allowed it to happen. Words mean a lot more than people think. Even the names we call others, make people seem not human. So it makes you think about what you say, said Salmon. Munyezamu said words also have the ability to heal and create. He feels education is the key. I am always excited to talk to students. If you really think it through, how it could be better.if people have advanced education, the propaganda would be a loser. Telling children here is powerful, because they are the next generation of decision makers. They are the future of Canada and the world, said Munyezamu. He said that global communications have an influence. Where the press is silenced, the peoples global connections can get messages out. He pointed out factors that deter genocidal regimes taking hold: people who stand up for what they believe and require it of their leaders, a political system with a vocal political opposition, free voting, proper policing backed by an impartial justice system, and freedom of speech and the press. The Canadian system should be a model for the whole world. Your neighbour can be your neighbour, you can have your own ideas but when it comes to community, everything else is outside, said Munyezamu. I owe society so much, I think it is the Canadian story. Everyone is connected and someone has done something good for me. It doesnt matter how people will be, God will still be God to me. When you examine yourself, there is always a way to do something good. When you are angry, you have a decision. You can chose either, take revenge and do exactly what they want and be who they want you to be, or take a different pattern and say I am better than that. If someone hurts you and you react in the same way, you are doing what they want you to do. If I can quote Dwayne Dyer When you have the choice to be right or be kind, always choose being kind. In spite of his painful past, Munyezamu shares a positive attitude wherever he goes. Since coming to Canada in 1998, he has been involved with Inspire Africa Foundation which raises funds and provides education for Rwandan orphans. He is active in Christian mission work through his church, and coaches soccer for under privileged children in Calgary. He was also awarded the Queens Diamond Jubilee medal. He said he is going back to Africa for a visit this year.

Kenyan mamas share their tale

On May 14, two Kenyan Mamas, Monica Mebet (l) and Leah Lato, took time during their two week visit to Canada to speak to the Strathmore High Schools Me To We Club. Leah Lato and Monica Mebet gave club members some insight into their daily life in Kenya and fielded many questions from the group. Members of the Me To We club raise funds throughout the school year to help build classrooms for children throughout Kenya.

Langdon students share lessons

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The Grade 3 students in Farran Harkonens class at Sarah Thompson Elementary School have been learning about the Burrowing Owl and the Swift Fox for the past two months. The eagerness of the students was contagious as they shared details about their project on May 16. The Swift Fox is a threatened species from the Grasslands region, which encompasses Langdon, Drumheller, Calgary, Strathmore and surrounding areas. There are currently only 94 Swift Foxes left in Alberta. The Burrowing Owl is another endangered species, with only about 1,600 left in the world. There are many ways to help them, and one of the best ones, according to Riley Dyck, is educating others. We wrote letters to the government, said Emily Wakaruk. A few interesting facts the students shared about the project were: The Burrowing Owl doesnt actually make its house, it just takes it from other animals, said Ashlynn Bates. The Swift Fox isnt endangered, its threatened, said Jayden Kluppelburg. A long time ago hunters used to shoot Swift Foxes but now theyre protected by the government, said Riley Dyck. The Swift Fox is extremely fast, said Seth Pullishy. The students plan to make presentations around the school to the other students, and will be presenting their project to the parent council.

Protecting the future

Farran Harkonen and her Grade 3 class Sarah Thompson Elementary School We are a grade three class from Sarah Thompson Elementary School in Langdon, Alberta. As part of our Life Cycles unit in Science, we have been studying the Swift Fox and Burrowing Owl. For the past two months, we have researched about these animals on the Internet, watched videos and Skyped as well as e-mailed experts from the Cochrane Ecological Institute, Operation Grasslands and the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation. The Swift Fox is a threatened species from the Grasslands region of Alberta. There are only ninety-four Swift Foxes left in the wild in our province. At one point, the Swift Fox had completely vanished from Alberta. There are many issues facing the Swift Fox. Habitat loss, predators, the oil and gas industry and a low survival rate negatively affect the Swift Fox. The Burrowing Owl is another endangered animal from the Grasslands Region of Alberta. There are only 1,600 burrowing owls left in the world. Every year the burrowing owl population drops by twenty-two percent. Pesticides, climate change, low reproduction, enemies and loss of their homes adversely impact the Burrowing Owl. We need to help these animals because they are an important part of the Alberta ecosystem and will go extinct if we do not do anything to aid their survival. We can help the Swift Fox by writing letters to the government and educating others. We can also help the Burrowing Owls by eating Alberta beef (as ranches provide homes for these animals), sending letters to the government to support habitat conservation and teaching others. Thank you for reading and listening to our ways to help endangered species like the Swift Fox and Burrowing Owl. We hope that others in the community will also try to help support the Swift Fox and Burrowing Owls survival.

Familiar face welcomed to Staff Sgt. role

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Shortly after moving to Strathmore RCMP member Kevin Reilly knew this was where he wanted to stay. Reilly has been in Strathmore for six years out of his 23 years on the force. In April he found out he was being promoted to Staff Sergeant, a position he was holding out for, and hoping for, over the past few years. I liked the community as soon as I got here, and within a year that was always kind of the idea I had hoped might happen, said Reilly. There were a lot of opportunities in the last three years for him to move up in the ranks and become Staff Sgt. in another community, but he held out, hoping that one day the position would become available in the community he loves. All of those I didnt bother applying because I wanted to wait for the chance here. Which is a big gamble because theres a chance it may not even go promotional let alone the fact that you may not (get it), so you might not get the opportunity to even try for it, but you kind of hope and if thats what you want some of us are a little more patient than others. I got lucky, it all worked out, said Reilly. The Strathmore detachment is now looking to fill the role of Sergeant, and once that position is filled Reilly will hand over some of the operational work to them, and will focus even more on the administrative side of running the detachment. He will make sure the office is running properly, while being more involved within the community and with both the County and Town councils. As a kid Reilly said he always knew right from wrong and did the right things, he always wanted to help people and be involved in the community. I refereed soccer a lot when I was a kid, from the time I was about eight or nine-years-old, and I suspect that had some kind of an influence, said Reilly. It is a similar type thing where youve got to intervene and make calls, and not please people all the time and do the right thing even though it may not be the popular choice. As soon as Reilly was old enough there was no question in his mind what he planned to do with his life. He went to University and obtained a degree, which was a requirement to join back

then, in Physical Education before joining the force. His degree specializes in coaching instruction and he feels that he applies a lot of his University training with his fellow staff in the detachment. He spends a lot of time mentoring them, coaching them, teaching them and helping them develop. Reilly began his training in Regina and was posted in five different communities before Strathmore. Ive been involved obviously in small towns now, and to be honest I wouldnt go back (to a city), I like small towns, I like small town policing, I like being involved in the community and I think thats part of it, said Reilly. Theres never a dull day as much as I am now farther away from the actual calls and that, theres still a lot of operational stuff to be done and fixed and worked on. I go out and speak to the guys and listen to them about things and try to get their input and try to teach them about how to be better police officers. The biggest thing for me is getting into the community, being involved in our schools, being involved in community events and being involved in our community in general. Those are all big things but its certainly also a challenge. Like I said theres never a dull moment but there certainly is always challenges and hopefully we can improve on what we do and how we do it, thats always the kind of goal. I suspect 90 per cent of us in our life are trying to do that in our jobs. Reilly is looking forward to what the future has to offer with his promotion, and is looking forward to the challenges involved. I think that we can improve our service, I think we can certainly make our community safer and thats kind of our goal.

Populating our habitats

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Late last month, on April 26, the Wheatland Conservation and Wildlife Association released 1,000 pheasants in 27 different locations throughout Wheatland County. Wheatland Conservation is the local chapter of the Alberta Fish and Game Association (AFGA). Each year Wheatland Conservation fundraises for different projects around the community. At the annual fall dinner held in Carseland they raised money for the recent release. We earmark all that money to go into either habitat for pheasants or to help improve the populations, said Clint LaRiviere, president of Wheatland Conservation and Wildlife Association. So this year we decided to, along with other funds from the club, we spent approximately $15,000 to purchase hens, pheasants, from the hatchery in Brooks and we released them in groups of 12 to 13 birds around the community and more in different areas. The pheasant is not a native bird to the area, it was brought in to the province in 1905, and it has since made Alberta its home. Over the years there has been a decline in the pheasant population. Declines come with better farming practices and loss of habitat. In the past weve done projects to enhance habitat along the WID (Western Irrigation District) canals, said LaRiviere. Any landowners that have habitat weve approached them, or theyve approached us and weve fenced it off so that it remains as pristine as possible. Were hoping that the release of hens into the wild will help the future pheasant population in the area. LaRiviere said there are some who think that releasing the birds doesnt do any good, but the association feels the birds were released here at one time and had thrived so there is potential to help see the population grow substantially. Were hoping that if even 100 of the birds nest this year thats going to put 800 to 1,200 birds on the ground this fall and they will be wild birds then, said LaRiviere. The Wheatland Conservation and Wildlife Association often partners with Ducks Unlimited and Partners in Habitat Development to help see wildlife habitats enhanced, or established in Wheatland County. The importance of our group is basically we try to be also stewards of the land, we do hunting and fishing but there wasnt any conservation groups before the AFGA Association and we basically started conservation here back in the early 1900s, said LaRiviere. Its essential so that we can have a voice to the government to voice our concerns over regulations and to ensure conservation is being done by the government. Those interested in becoming a member with the Wheatland Conservation and Wildlife Association can contact the membership chair Doris Thompson at 403-934-2629. The association is also going digital soon. By the end of the month they will have a website up, www.wheatlandconservation.com where people can go to find more information about the organization.

Bassen enjoying DEL but credits his Strathmore minor hockey

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmores own Chad Bassen has played nine years in the DEL German Elite Hockey League, most recently signing with Wolfsburg for the upcoming season, beginning in September. Prior to competing in Europe, Bassen was in the WHL for the Regina Pats, Vancouver Giants, Medicine Hat Tigers, and Everett Silvertips from 2000 to 2004. However, he always remembers where he got his start. As soon as my seasons over, I come back. I built a house a couple years ago in Hillview, said the 30-year-old left-winger. I played my minor hockey in Strathmore. Strathmores been great to me, they let me grow my hockey game, and a lot of people have been helpful to me. With most of his family still in town, he thanks them with his hockey development: Definitely my parents are number one. Theyve helped me along the way, theyve pretty much given me everything I need for my hockey career to take off. Bassens uncle Bob played in the NHL as a centre from 1985 to 1990, and finished his career in the German Elite League as well. Grandpa Hank Bassen was an NHL goaltender a backup to Terry Sawchuk on the Detroit Red Wings. Both were large influences growing up. I watched (Uncle Bob) a lot in the NHL, and just how hard he played, and how hard he worked, Chad Bassen said. He also bases his game in Germany around the style of his childhood hero, speedster Pavel Bure. Im one of the faster guys over there. Im probably not the biggest or strongest for sure, but Ive learned over the years thats one of my assets, and Ive got to use that and just survive over there, Bassen said. During his first pro season in Germany, many locked-out NHL players joined, including Doug Weight and Stephane Robidas. This was the time he feels he learned the most; not to discredit the WHL, where in his first year with the Pats, his team lost in the semi-finals of the Memorial Cup. Theyre both amazing leagues, its just the difference between men and boys really young kids, 17, 18, 19, and 20-year-olds in the Western League, and you get over (to Europe) and my first year I was playing with guys 35 to 40-yearsold. His best seasons to date have been with Medicine Hat in the WHL back in 2003 (33 points) and with the Staubing Tigers in 2010 (30 points). In the off seasons, he strives to keep his fitness up to get bigger and stronger; its necessary to have a good season. Once you get into the pro ranks, guys are in very good shape, especially over there in Europe. Everyone can skate. And you got to be ready, and if youre not, someones going to be there to take your job, he said. Bassen plans on playing as long as his body will hold up, most likely into his late thirties. Afterwards, he would love to come back home and be involved with the WHL where he got his start.

High School Rodeo had no Strathmore competitors

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Strathmore High School Rodeo has existed since 1971, having competitors come from as far as British Columbia. This was President and Coordinator Lorne Lausens fourteenth year in charge, and though no Strathmore kids were involved this past weekend, Lausen has hope for upcoming years. Right now there are no club members in Strathmore, Lausen said. But in the future theres probably 10 of them coming up in the next few years, itll be a real healthy club again. Thats kind of the way high school rodeo goes, it has its ups and downs. The numbers fluctuate as high as 12 Strathmore kids in the club, to as little as one or two (or none this year). But if we dont keep it going on the years that we dont have many, its not going to be going for the kids when we do have lots of them again. Lausen said. Thats where my dedication comes from. Ive got to keep it going now because there will be a big club again. Some close-by-town participants included: Cody Stinnissen and Austin Aleman averaging third in team roping, Matea Lloyd averaging goat roping in seventh place, and Tara Wilkinson finishing third on the barrels average. Most notably, Devin Wigemyr and Sloan Smith of Southern Alberta finished first in the average of team roping. Theyre pretty consistent boys as it is, said Rodeo Secretary Carla Nott of Wigemyr and Smith. They rope pretty aggressively so that explains why they end up in the top of the pack every time. Roughly 40 volunteers are needed to assist with the event, and each year the rodeo is sponsored to avoid fees for the crowd. A lot of the towns charge gate admission but Ive always said that the parents have to haul the kids around, I dont like to charge for gate admission or programs, Lausen said.

Zarownys team wins CCBC Championship

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmores Tyson Zarowny has been playing baseball for nine years, idolizing Shane Victorino of the Boston Red Sox. This year, Zarowny and the Prairie Baseball Academy took home the CCBC National Championship. It was Zarownys first time on the college team, who have now been CCBC Champions three seasons in a row. They produced 39 wins this year, a school record. Zarowny played on the Strathmore AAA Reds until the beginning of his last year of high school, when Reds Coach Zane Anderson made a suggestion to the outfielder. He coached me for two years, like in Grade 10 and 11, and he helped me go to Vauxhall, Zarowny said. In Grade 12 at Vauxhall Academy, Coach Les McTavish assisted him with the new transition and to improve his gamewhich he did. This past season, Zarowny held a batting average of .324, scored 17 runs, had 21 RBI, and didnt have a single error. He also used his great speed to his advantage, stealing nine bases. He hopes to win the CCBC Championship again next year. Zarowny has one more year to go at PBA in Lethbridge, where hes studying for a diploma in political science. After that, hed like to complete a four-year program, but isnt sure where just yet. I enjoy playing it all the time, he said. Its just fun. This summer, Zarowny will be playing for the Lethbridge Bulls in the Western Major Baseball League.

Outfielder Tyson Zarowny slides to first base in the CCBC Championship. His team, the Prairie Baseball Academy, were 2013 National Champions. Zarowny led the Academy with four hits, and had a batting average of .571 over the tournament.

72-year-old riding over 200km for his wife

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter 72-year-old Strathmore resident Doug Risdon will be training to ride roughly 200 km over two days for the Ride to Conquer Cancer, hoping to raise awareness (and money) benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundations research. On June 22 and 23, as part of Team Farmer with 21 others, he will cycle along with his daughter and son-inlaw, Brooke and Jesse Parker. Risdons wife of 39 years, Norma-Jean, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer this past October and is recovering from her second surgery to help her conquer this disease. As of now, she supposedly has a clear bill of health. It is a disease thats 90-95 per cent curable, Risdon said. Her doctor told us, if youre going to get a cancer, this is the one you want. Risdon has been cycling for about 10 years with different clubs, including one that goes on a 600km ride around Saskatchewan and Manitoba for a week each July. However, the upcoming Conquer Cancer ride will be the longest per day journey that hes been on. Training as much as he can with hour practice rides, he also plays in an over-70 hockey league. Risdon continues to work at the popular Risdon Farms, run for three generations by his family. Risdon is devoting himself to the ride in honour of Norma-Jeans strength, perseverance, and strong will. Hes prepared to do anything to aid the advances in treatment and breakthroughs that come from money raised by events such as the Ride to Conquer Cancer. If the research hadnt have been done up until now with Norma-Jean, if this had happened to her forty years ago, she would probably be in trouble. I mean this technology that they have for thyroid cancer, I dont know when it first came out, but a 95 per cent recovery rate is pretty phenomenal. Risdon has raised $1,800 so far, but has a goal of $3,200. You can donate to his page by using this link: http://www.conquercancer. ca/site/TR/Events/Alberta20 13?px=3157137&pg=persona l&fr_id=1452.

U14 Thunder unbeaten in tournament

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter In their season opener, the U14 Strathmore Thunder girls went 4-0 in the Strathmore Thunder Peewee Fastpitch Tournament this past weekend, beating the Red Deer Rage in the final, 16-5. I think in the final game we had really good hitting, Coach Jason Sauve said. Our pitching was strong throughout the tournament. Everyone played really well actually, the whole squad. And everybody contributed which was great. The Thunder blew through the Alberta Warriors and the Coronation Steeelers in Games 1 and 2, but faced the Steelers in the semifinals as well, narrowly beating them the second time, 15-14. The team has an upcoming tournament in Red Deer come the first weekend of June, and Sauve says they have a few little things to work on: I think just getting used to a higher caliber of softball. So faster pitchers, and a quicker pace but theyre getting there.

Born: March 2011

Tigger is a handsome boy with a quiet and reserved personality. He is excellent with other cats and would be a perfect companion to another cat who may be lonely in the home. Tigger came to us from an acreage that was not able to care for the amount of cats living on the property. He is very healthy. Tigger would do best adopted into a quieter home.

Doug Patton is our guest and friend Born and raised calgarian, Musician, engineer and CEO of airwaves studios In Calgary AB. Outdoor rink to be a new pillar in Strathmore

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Strathmore Agricultural Society is planning on constructing an outdoor rink for the town, available for hockey, ringette, skating, lacrosse, soccer, and basketball. With the construction of the Family Outdoor Rink, our hope is to fill a void in the community, said the Societys Operations Manager Jessica Hall. There were too many people for too little recreation space, and an alternate venue was in great need; the Family Centre Arena only has three per cent availability in their schedule. This new project opens leisure opportunities for all ages. The outdoor rink will come equipped with safety lights, boards, fencing, and bleachers. The main objective of the Ag Society is to help promote healthy outdoor living year-round; however, theyre also hoping to bring new events to Strathmore, that we could now potentially present. The Society plans to launch the Family Outdoor Rink with the Heritage Classic. Modeled after the NHL version, we would host an outdoor hockey game, Hall said. The Heritage Classic will help foster a positive relationship with the youth in our community by featuring local hockey teams, and as a result the youth will take pride in the outdoor rink, reducing the risk of vandalism. The Ag Society will donate land for the Family Outdoor Rink (right behind the Civic Centre and Strathmore High School), provide liability insurance, and maintain the site once its up and running. Volunteers, donors, partners, and service groups are still needed but once all the fundraising is complete, construction will begin most likely in August, and be finished by next year. This project will capture the essence of community a group of people who share the same passion, enthusiasm and determination; all working together towards a common goal, Hall said.

The Station, Napa, the Strathmore Times, Strathmore Golf, Dennis McNeill, Real Canadian Liquor, Travelodge, ATB, Queens Nails and Spa, Oxbow Golf, Runway Hair Design, All Genres DJ, Crowfoot Liquor, Boston Pizza, Home Hardware, Canadian Tire, A&W and Botsford Deli of Langdon.

Obituaries
Christie, Stanley Neil
1927 - 2013 God saw Dad getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around him and whispered Come To Me. Dad passed away quietly and peacefully the morning of May 19th, 2013. In his own soft words, he told us, Thats Enough. He is deeply missed by his wife of 60 years, Mary (Van Bavel), his son Wayne and his daughters Valerie, Rhonda (Nelson), Marlene (Ernie) and Darlene (Greg). He was a very proud Grandpa to Stephanie (Jeremy), Erin, Kristin (Kevin), Tanner (Kimberley), Bailey (Dan),Tyson, Devon, Taylor (Chelsea), Taralyn and Lyndsay and Great Grandpa to Coby, Isaiah, Ava, Joey, Brooklyn, Foster and Cohen. Dad was born the youngest of 13 children to David and Mary and was raised in the Rocky Mountain House area. His love of farming called him to leave the logging industry in BC and brought him to the Strathmore area in the early 50s. It was while driving school bus that Dad first met the love of his life, reuniting with Mary a few years later at a Saturday night hop at the Strathmore Legion Hall. Dad and Mom were wed April 18, 1953, the first couple to be married in the newly built Sacred Heart Parish in Strathmore. In addition to working as the curling and hockey ice rink manager, Dad was employed with the County road building crew and gained a wealth of farming experience working for the Hansons and Desmets prior to farming with his brother-in-law Jim Van Bavel east of Strathmore. While raising his family Dad kept busy with the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Church and was a founding member of the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society. He took to the ice curling and coaching hockey and also assisted with the Crowfoot 4-H Beef Club. Upon leaving farming, Dad and Mom moved to Strathmore where Dad was employed with Alberta Hail & Crop, later reversing his role and becoming a voice for the farmer with his companies C&D Consultants and Triple C Consultants. Dad enjoyed his last years residing with Mom at the Wheatland Lodge and Sagewood Seniors, forming a loving bond with all of his friends who cared for him. Dad touched everyone he met with his kindness, compassion for others, ability to listen to all ages and eagerness to lend a helping hand. We hold close to our hearts many precious memories of our beloved Husband, Dad and Grandpa and his passions: family, friends, horseback riding, sports and a good game of crib. Whatever you do, do your best, the years ahead will take care of the rest. A Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Wheatland Funeral Chapel, Strathmore at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Hope Community Covenant Church (245 Brent Blvd., Strathmore) at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to STARS (Box 570, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Calgary, T2E 8M7) To send condolences, please visit www. wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.

Dougan, (nee Fielder) Helen

Aug 18, 1944 - Feb 25, 2013 On the day she chose to go Helen had visits from both her oldest and her youngest brothers. She would have taken great comfort in that. The importance of those symbolic parentheses are testament to Helens love for her family. Because Helen had no children of her own, she and Harv, her husband of almost 50 years, embraced two very special little girls, Kelli and Nicki, symbolically adopting them as their own many decades ago. Although they never had a pet of their own, rarely a day went by that wouldnt see either Harv or Helen tossing the ball, petting or just speaking quietly through the fence to their next door neighbours dogs, effectively becoming surrogate owners. For most of her life spent in Strathmore, Helen had no sisters close by. So, in a pattern that was to characterize her life, she symbolically adopted Barb as her sister and very best friend. Over their several decades of travelling together, attending church together, of garage-saling and gardening, their bond of friendship and sisterhood only strengthened. You couldnt run through the long list of Helens brothers and sisters Don, Jack, Pat, Keith, Ted, Beth, Judi, (Helen), Leigh, Bob and Verne without including Barb amongst them. The light of Helens blessed and happy, but all too short life was her husband and teenage sweetheart Harv, who passed away far too soon just over a year ago, leaving her with a heart that never fully healed spiritually, emotionally or physically. It would do her memory a disservice were no mention made of her other love; shopping. Goodness, could she shop! No garage sale ever saw Helen walk away empty handed. There wasnt a Sears store within driving distance that didnt have at least one clerk who knew Helen, if not by name, then assuredly by sight. Her love of all children was paralleled and expressed by her love of buying gifts for children. Never to be caught unprepared, she kept a constant lookout for, and the shelves of her spare room stocked full of, stuffed animals, outfits, toys, books and gifts for babies and children, some awaiting a birthday and others, as yet unborn. Helen kept a stockpile of comic and funny Mothers and Fathers Day, birthday, anniversary, Halloween and Christmas cards against the day when a friend, relative or loved one was either celebrating or recuperating. The modern day advent of talking and musical cards delighted her to no end, and she had no compunction spending as much time and money picking out just the right card as she did picking out just the right gift. She loved to laugh but enjoyed so much more making others laugh. If it is possible to sum up a life in a single word, then that word for Helen would be others. She placed herself in front of, or above, no one. She lived to complement, not dominate the needs and wants of others. She saw and lovingly embraced her role as helpmate to Harv. There was never a reunion, a birthday party, a church supper nor a work-bee that couldnt depend upon Helens fun filled spirit to lighten the work load. She volunteered at her church, with the Strathmore Womens Shelter and Harvs Car Club. She was as willing to help paint a goat shed as she was to bake one of her amazing carrot cakes for a church sale or siblings birthday party. She knitted scarves, toques and mitts for the homeless. And she was oh so faithful in visiting any relative, friend or acquaintance confined to bed. Helens was truly a life defined by helping, caring and love of others and there is perhaps, no greater epitaph to which any of us could aspire. If you count yourself amongst those who cared for Helen, please do feel at liberty to wear your most comfortable jeans and attend her joy filled memorial service, to be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Strathmore Alliance Church (325 First Ave.) at 1:00 p.m. Helen supported The Mustard Seed ministry in Calgary for many years and would have taken comfort knowing others like you had chosen to continue her support by giving a donation in her memory. Donations may be made directly to The Mustard Seed (102 11 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0X5). To send condolences, please visit www. wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.

Members of Strathmore High track and field team have been practicing indoors since April due to poor weather, by running with parachutes through the halls. They will host County Finals on May 22.

SHS bringing track back to high standards

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Back in the 1990s, and around 2007 to 2009, Strathmore High School had a reputation for track and field success. Since then, skill hasnt necessarily declined, but the amount of time put forth has. Vice Principal Larson wanted to change that. Mr. Larson had this plan to try and get more of us out so that we could be back in coaching, but so that we werent like one or two people trying to do everything, said Pat Fule, who coaches sprints. So we all got together and we each took different events and it spread the load of the coaching and the time. Mr. Sonsteby focuses on distance running, Mr. Moncks assists with throwing events, Ms. Westgard overlooks the jump teams, and even Mr. Larson himself coaches the relay groups. We wanted to get this track program back on its feet. It used to be strong before and then you know, different people were getting involved, and some of us had to drop out, and some people get busy, said Fule. So were trying to get more kids to come out and buy into the program too, and get involved, and take it seriously, and train regularly. Kids practice their events at least twice a week, and the occasional weekend to prep for the upcoming Wheatland County Finals on May 22. After County, SHS can qualify for the South Central Zone, who could potentially represent at Provincials. Expecting high results in the 1500m dash, Mr. Fule says theyve also got some really good, fast girl sprinters, and were hoping to have some solid relay teams this year too. To practice, Fule encourages the students to not only run their events, but to run the same distance multiple times with a rest in between, in order to build their speed and speed endurance. We had some good runners and throwers in the 90s, I know, it sounds like a long time ago, but we had some provincial champions, said Fule. Were trying to get it back going.
