Dear: Janet Finlay: Re: Submission of GISC9301-D2 Please accept this letter as formal submission of Deliverable 2: Classification/Data Creation and Edit for GISC9301 ArcGIS Applications. From this assignments students gained knowledge with standard data classification using ArcGIS. Students will learn to manually classify data and map density data. They will also become proficient with shapefiles on ArcGIS and gain knowledge on how to use the shapefiles in a personal database to calculate area. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any additional information at 1-416-509-8070. Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely,

Introduction
Not only does this assignment require students to use the knowledge they gained from chapters 6-7 and in chapters 15-16 Getting to know ArcGIS, but they also need to use their common sense as well. Students will also use this assignment to build on prior knowledge that they gained earlier in the semester.

Chapter 6
a) Three examples of quantitative data are temperature measured in Kelvin, the number of bottles a winery sells and the percent of students who pass a quiz. b) Three examples of categorical data are race, gender and educational level. c) Out of the 6 classification methods offered by ArcGIS, I feel that these ones would be best suited to these specific situations. i) For the income data of the seven distinct neighbourhoods in Thorold I feel that the classification method that would best suit the data is natural breaks. Because that data is already clustered it makes it very easy to separate the data this way. ii) For the air quality index data I feel the classification method that would best suit the data is standard deviation. I feel this way because they majority of the data will be in the 41-50 and 51-60 intervals. Then on the outsides of data the amount of people in the 1-40 and 61-100 intervals will trail off, just like a bell curve. iii) For the tested IQs of students by school I feel the classification method that would best suit the data is standard deviation to create classes. Because the data set gives you the standard deviation and mean it would make the most sense to use it to help separate and classify the data. iv) For the raster data set from the TERRA Satellites ASTER sensor I feel the classification method that would best suit the data is the manual method. I feel this way because the two divisions that determine deciduous trees are so specific that with any other method they would not be able to be highlighted to be figured out. d) For any frequency distribution histogram of classified data, the y-axis typically represents the actual frequency of the data. e) For any frequency distribution histogram of classified data, the x-axis typically represents the intervals of classified data. f) Knowing what I know now, I would most definitely want to re-answer question 2.c from Assignment #1. My initial answer to the question was: As the health departments GIS Consultant, my first thought would be to make this map extremely readable for everyone who will encounter it. I feel like colours and large symbols usually help keep peoples attention. I would go about organizing the data on the excel sheet by showing them directly on the map. Each bird specie would have its own unique symbol shown in a legend. Where there were found is where they would be shown directly on the map. Then to show if the West Nile results were positive or negative I would use two different colours to display this information. 3

After learning about graduate symbology and iconic symbolization here are the changes that I would make to my previous answer. Firstly that I would introduce the concept of graduate symbology. Each bird would still continue to have its own symbol, but the symbol would be larger, or smaller considering how many birds died in that region. 4. a) Shape file showing the Niagara College Glendale Campus:

b) The total greenhouse building footprint

The total greenhouse building footprint in the attribute table is 1977.6217m2

I edited the polygon to create two separate polygons for the greenhouse

In the attribute table the area of the greenhouse glassed section is 1648.8188m2. In the attribute table the area of the greenhouse office section is 328.80295m2.

c) Polygon of the lagoon south of campus

The attribute shows that the area of the lagoon is 2.312281 hectares. And the Lagoons length perimeter is 721.266621 meters.

Conclusion
In conclusion I feel like this assignment has taught me a lot of useful skills that I will continue to use. Having the ability to determine the area of a specific outlined polygon on ArcGIS is something that I personally think will prove to be more than useful in my thesis assignment.
