St. Bernardine
Most of the saints suffer great personal opposition, even persecution. Bernardine, by contrast, seems more like a human dynamo who simply took on the needs of the world. He was the greatest preacher of his time journeying across Italy, calming strife-torn cities, attacking the paganism he found rampant, attracting crowds of 30,000, following St. Francis admonition to preach about vice and virtue, punishment and glory. Compared with St. Paul by the pope, Bernardine had a keen intuition of the needs of the time, along with solid holiness, boundless energy and joy. He accomplished all this despite having a very weak and hoarse voice, miraculously improved later because of his devotion to Mary. When he was 20, the plague was at its height in his hometown, Siena. Sometimes as many as 20 people died in one day at the hospital. Bernardine offered to run the entire establishment, and with the help of other young men, nursed patients there for four months. He escaped the plague but was so exhausted that a fever confined him for several months. He spent another year caring for a beloved aunt (his parents had died when he was a child) and at her death began to fast and pray to know Gods will for him. At 22, he entered the Franciscan Order and was ordained two years later. For almost a dozen years he lived in solitude and prayer, but his gifts ultimately caused him to be sent to preach. He always traveled on foot, sometimes speaking for hours in one place, then doing the same in another town. Especially known for his devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, Bernardine devised a symbol HISthe first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greekin gothic letters on a blazing sun. The devotion spread, and the symbol began to appear in churches, homes, and public buildings. Opposition arose from those who thought it a dangerous innovation. Three attempts were made to have the pope take action against him, but Bernardines holiness, orthodoxy and intelligence were evidence of his faithfulness. Bernardine strongly emphasized scholarship and further study of theology and canon law with his Franciscan friars. When he started there were 300 friars in the community; when he died there were 4,000. He returned to preaching the last two years of his life, dying on the road. St. Bernardine of Siena, pray for us.

DID YOU KNOW?....

Memorial Day was originally called DECORATION DAY. It is a day of remembrance for those who have died in the service of our nation. Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, but it's difficult to prove the origins of the day. There is also evidence that a women's group in the South decorated graves before the end of the Civil War. In either case, Memorial Day has had numerous starts. Though some people think it's a day to honor any and all dead, Memorial Day is intended to honor those who have given their all in service to our country.

PLEASE

REMEMBER TO RECOGNIZE AND THANK

ALL WHO SERVE OUR COUNTRY AS WE BEGIN

MESSAGE TO FAMILIES

This is just an FYI .. Please note that for the 2013-14 school year we will separate Primary and Elementary tuition through F.A.C.T.S. so you may see tuition entered and then credited, then reentered again to facilitate the above separation. This procedure will assist OMMS with some new budgeting requirements by the Diocese. If you have questions or concerns please just give us a call, but we thank you for your patience with this new procedure.

OUR BLESSED MOTHER is now

beautifully adorned.
We extend our gratitude to all who joined us for our mass celebration to honor MARY, OUR BLESSED MOTHER, on Friday morning and to encircle her in flowers! She is so beautifully adorned due to Ms. Paredes and the gift of her time to handcraft the fragrant crowns for all to admire as they visit the MARY AT THE ENTRANCE, the MARY IN THE PEACE GARDEN, and the MARY IN OUR PRIMARY! Every year MARY is surrounded in such a colorful array of beautiful flowers due to Patty Fairlie and Gudulia for their gift of time, seeking out numerous growers to encourage this sweet-smelling donation to honor our BLESSED MOTHER! Patty and Gudulia on behalf of everyone thank you for sharing so much of your time to intensify the beauty of this special day! We would also be remiss if we did not thank our eighth graders, Mrs. Rocha and Gudulia for the beautiful bouquets, our Altar Servers,

On Friday we will once again have our SPIRIT FIELD DAY

TUITION ASSISTANCE FOR THE UPCOMING 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR Unfortunately the funding for the upcoming school year is very limited and we are unable to offer the Tom and Adele E. These applications will require specific information that must be submitted along with the application to be reviewed and considered by a committee of non-partisan members.
