Welcome to a new year and to what is certainly going to be Oxford Philomusicas most exciting yet. Oxford Philomusica is now well established as one of the UKs leading orchestras attracting some of the worlds greatest artists. Our stellar lineup for 2013 includes artists such as Valery Gergiev, Maxim Vengerov, Nicola Benedetti, Nigel Kennedy and Anne-Sophie Mutter, to name just a few. The versatility of the Philomusicas magnificent musicians allows us to embrace all musical genres and present a wide range of repertoire spanning four centuries of great music: from the baroque to the contemporary. Beethoven is featured prominently in the autumn as we celebrate our 15th anniversary. As always, we nurture new talent and encourage young audiences through our Youth Concerto Competition, the Young Artists Platform of pre-concert performances and our muchloved FUNomusica concerts for those from 4 years. I hope you will join us for a thrilling musical journey.

Symphonic Schubert
Schubert Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759, The Unfinished Symphony No. 9 in C major, D. 944, The Great Marios Papadopoulosconductor The Philomusica celebrates the genius of Franz Schubert with a performance of two of the composers best known symphonies: the aptly-titled Great, and the magnificent Unfinished. The reason for Schuberts abandonment of his eighth symphony six years before his death remains a hotly debated topic, not least because the completed movements include some of the most glorious of all the composers music.

Beethoven Festival
To celebrate 15 years of Oxford Philomusica, founder and music director Marios Papadopoulos takes us on a musical journey devoted to Beethovens nine symphonies and five piano concertos. To complement the symphonies and piano concertos, the Philomusicas Concertmasters present Beethovens violin and piano sonatas in a series of five pre-concert recitals.
Saturday 26 October Sheldonian Theatre, 8pm
Beethoven I
Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15 Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 55, Eroica Marios Papadopoulospiano/conductor Infused with the quintessential qualities of the classical concerto, Beethoven draws upon his Viennese predecessors in his Piano Concerto No. 1. The Haydnesque finale, brimming with infectious energy and humour, paired with the revolutionary weight of Beethovens game changing Eroica symphony ensure the Beethoven Festival begins with a bang.
Papadopoulos believes that Beethoven came in like a lion with his early music, and the playing makes no attempt to impose 18th-century good manners on these products of 1796. [He] has a full range of dynamics and tone colours to lead to the climaxes, and his performances are full of personality and intelligence... the performances command attention - Brian Hunt, Daily Telegraph

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37 Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 Marios Papadopoulospiano/conductor Although it displays a flavour of the spirit of Mozart and his classical comrades, Beethovens passionate and somewhat fiery Piano Concerto No. 3 offers glimpses of a new musical era. How to Support
Without our supporters we could never sustain the worldclass music making that we promote in Oxford, across the Thames Valley and beyond. The Orchestra relies entirely on its own fundraising efforts to maintain not only its concert programme but also its education and community work. Oxford Philomusica is a registered UK charity (number 1084256) so all donations attract Gift Aid where applicable. Be part of the musical world of a great orchestra and help secure its future. Concerts A top-quality concert in the splendour of Oxfords finest venues with a post-concert dinner in a University College provides the ideal ambience to entertain friends and family, clients and staff, and excellent networking opportunities. You can also sponsor our concerts on tour. Academy and Community Our work in local and special schools, the university, and in hospitals, offers opportunities and benefits both to talented students and to the disadvantaged. Please ask about projects to support and our scholarship schemes. Friends and Patrons Join a like-minded group inspired by the work of the Orchestra and be invited to termly events. Contact John Caunt, Friends and Patrons Secretary on 01865 452 265 or john@johncaunt.com. Tax-efficient methods of giving A legacy is one of the simplest and most flexible ways of making a gift. Tax-exempt gifts from the US can be made through the 501(c)3 charity, Americans for Oxford. Gifts of shares are currently exempt from Capital Gains Tax in addition to the usual tax deductions. Gift Aid adds 25% to the value of your gift; higher-rate taxpayers can claim a tax rebate. Please contact Simon Payne, Development Manager on 07775 904 626 or simon@oxfordphil.com.
Oxford Philomusica
Since it was founded in 1998 Oxfords professional symphony orchestra has become one of the leading orchestras in the UK. Praised as excellent by Gramophone Magazine and thoroughly impressive by BBC Music Magazine, Oxford Philomusicas reputation is based on the uncompromising artistic standards of its founder and music director, Marios Papadopoulos, and maintained by some of the very best orchestral musicians in London, Oxford and the Thames Valley. In October 2002 the Philomusica was appointed the first-ever Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford, a Residency which has recently been extended for a further five years. From the start Oxford Philomusica has enjoyed endorsement of its mission from a remarkable roster of distinguished artists, including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Andrs Schiff, Hlne Grimaud, John Lill, Stephen Kovacevich and Lang Lang. The Orchestras achievements include its year-round programme of concerts at the Sheldonian Theatre, which attract consistent critical praise and loyal public support; outstanding recordings of Haydns Creation with New College Choir - CD of the Month in BBC Music Magazine - and of the Handel/Mendelssohn Acis and Galatea with Christ Church Cathedral Choir; major celebrations of Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn; and its annual Piano Festival and Summer Academy. To these successes should be added the establishment of the hugely popular FUNomusica Family Concerts, and the Orchestras annual Summer Baroque Season. 2012 saw the introduction of the Orchestras acclaimed Chamber Music Series, showcasing what The Times recognised as the Orchestras glorious individual players. The Soloists of Oxford Philomusica have become a tight-knit family of like-minded musicians, enjoying the exceptional rapport which lies at the heart of fine chamber music-making. Oxford Philomusica has been firmly committed to education and community work from its earliest days, bringing music to the widest possible range of audiences often outside the traditional concert venue to schools, hospitals, community centres and retirement homes. As part of its University Residency, the Orchestra collaborates with the Faculty of Music in educational programmes for the student community. The Orchestras partnerships with Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council provide performance opportunities and tuition to hundreds of talented young musicians and an annual Youth Concerto Competition. As it approaches its 15th anniversary, Oxford Philomusica enthusiastically embraces its role of filling what Arts Council England defined as an identifiable regional need for a professional symphony orchestra based in the area between Birmingham and Bournemouth. The Philomusica has been appointed Orchestra in Association at the new Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, and its Thames Valley presence is being further consolidated by new ventures in Reading, Bristol, Cheltenham, Basingstoke, Bath and Malvern. Beyond its home region, the Orchestra is rapidly developing a national and international profile with regular appearances in London and an international touring programme with appearances in France, Switzerland, Greece, Denmark, Belgium and Sweden.
