Persuasive Speech Planner and Outline

Topic Speech Purpose (Thesis): After hearing my speech, the audience will: Outline I. Introduction A. Attention Grabber 1. Present one or two striking facts or figures. 2. Use vivid phrases to show how health, happiness, security, prosperity, chances for advancement, etc., are directly involved. B. Thesis 1. One sentence 2. Identifies the problem and states the solution The Body (the most important and longest part of your speech) A. Identify the nature and effect of the problem. 1. Use examples, illustrations, statistics, etc., to show how extensive the problem is. 2. Explain the causes of the problem. 3. Use examples, illustrations, etc., to show the problems effect a) on the audience b) on the audiences family and friends c) on the future B. Present the solution to the problem. 1. Explain the various alternatives to the problem. 2. Support your solutions with facts, figures, examples, testimony, etc. 3. Show how your solution is practical and realistic. C. Show the solution in terms of the future. 1. Project the audience into the future. 2. Paint them a realistic picture of the future if your solution is accepted and implemented. Conclusion A. Restate the main points of your thesis. B. Briefly mention the main arguments that support your thesis. C. Finish with a memorable statement.

Persuasive Speech Requirements


1. Speech time limit: 2-4 minutes 2. Visual Aid: Presenter must refer to his or her visual aid and incorporate it into the speech. 3. Thesis Statement: clearly presents the purpose of the speech 4. Outline: one page typed only notes presenter may have with him or her when delivering the speech. 5. Purpose of the speech must be persuasive and contain one of the following goals: a. Take up an action b. Change a belief or a value c. Change an existing law or policy and offer a solution 6. Presenter needs to use the following techniques when preparing for the speech: a. Good, clear speech b. Good posture c. Vocal inflection and intonation d. Use of gestures Guidelines to help: 1. Remember, you are in a sense selling something to the audience. It may be an idea, a belief, a value, a new law or a policy. You are trying to persuade your audience to believe what you believe. 2. In a persuasive speech, you must always emphasize the good points the advantages. Remember that you must take a stand for OR against your topic and try to convince your audience to think like you. 3. The visual aide may be a chart, graph, poster, PowerPoint, or any concrete tool you use to help convey your idea(s) to the audience, persuading them to accept your proposal(s). 4. The goal of any persuasive speech must be definite in the beginning, even before you write the speech. This goal is contained in your thesis statement. The thesis is the key that will help guide you as you put together your idea(s) for this speech.
