Week 1 DQ1

Consider the following statement: Psychology has a long past, but a short history. What do you think this means? In your opinion, which person or perspective has had the most influence on the growth of psychology? The phrase psychology has a long past but a short history simply means that, in my personal opinion, psychology has been around for quite some time however certain individuals are coming up with alternative theories to it. Although psychology materialized in the late 1800's, psychologists have been establishing innovative notions, perceptions, and theories over the years. I concur that psychology has a protracted past because since the beginning of time humans have been on earth they have been a part of psychology however they did not come to this realization, this is my personal belief. Individuals are presently being educated, acknowledging, and familiarizing themselves with psychology. Each piece of new information that is coming from diverse psychologists establishes a short history on their notions, perceptions, and theories. What another individual personally believes from his or her studies leaves the door open for the creation of a new theory, and this is something that is constantly and will forever occur. Behaviorism, I personally believe, plays the biggest part on influencing the expansion of psychology since there were so many different psychologists that studied it and added their individual finales to theories considered long before they had come to their personal convictions. To recognize general philosophies of knowledge, behaviorists are still looking for additional information. Behaviorists have concluded that the same laws of education or learning pertain to every class or type.

How do you think gender, race, and ethnicity have affected your behavior? Provide an example from your life where you have observed people from different ethnic backgrounds or genders behaving differently in the same situation.

It is not my belief that ethnicity, gender, and race have affected my behavior; however, it has influenced my reactions to how others see me. It has been said on numerous occasions and I am a firm believer in this saying, We are all created equal, and with that being said an individuals gender, ethnicity, or race should not be an issue ever. There are three sides to life the positive, the negative, and the impartial, and whichever side you choose to be on is totally your decision. I know that we have evolved greatly from our past especially speaking for myself with me being an African American and woman in modern society. Women and African Americans followed their husbands and the majority without any question or concern. Presently women and African Americans are making huge improvements in society. They are lawyers, doctors, and basketball players just to name a few, and we are making the same amount of money as the majority and males. Therefore, it bothers me tremendously when men try to make it seem as though or treat a woman or women in general as if we are physically or mentally handicapped when it comes to certain things in life. For example, it is tradition for my mother to do the shopping for the entire house every couple of weeks on Saturdays. Consequently, this one particular Saturday I decided to go along with my mother one because I thought she could use my help and two because it would give us a chance to spend some mother/daughter time together. We began shopping at the grocery store, my mother got her meat order and a couple of more items from this particular store, we ended up having a lot of bags after we went through the checkout. This man insisted that we let him do all the work of putting the groceries in the car because he did not want us to break a nail or something along that line because the bags were heavy and numerous. I decided not to say anything but to show this man that not only could I handle the groceries by myself I could do it in a neat, orderly, and swift fashion while he stood there and watched. I grabbed at least several bags at a time in a quick manner and before you know it I was done and he was speechless. He assumed that just because I was a woman I was afraid of a little hard work. Shame on him!!!
