Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern

Myself, Kirsty Alderson, Kirsty Hardingham and Sophie Wilson have created the 2013 Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern yearbook. Course tutor, Duncan Harrison, specifically asked for an interactive PDF yearbook, so that it could be accessed by a wider audience, on a range of technology.

About
The graduates on the Leeds College of Art Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern course study different modules throughout their three years, which are supported by relevant workshops. Visiting professionals, events, competitions and industry placements are also very important stages in the development of the students.

Concept
The Journey Is the Destination represents each students time on the course, as they have developed as designers throughout their three years. We are celebrating the whole three years, and everything that has entailed - not just the final outcome, but how the students got there. We have split the time on the course in to the two sections, Journey and Destination, which is how we have organised the content.

Cover Design
The cover contains 64 coloured square, representing a square for each student, a square for the tutors and a square for the yearbook team. The theme of squares is relevant to the grid used inside, and colours from the cover have been used on the quote pages.

THE JOURNEY

Grid & Layout

The theme of squares is used throughout the book. The layout is simple and professional, allowing for the course work to gain the viewers attention. The images are either displayed in a square or a rectangle, to keep the page layouts interesting. The placing of each students image was allocated randomly, for fairness.

Specifications
The yearbook is 210 x 210mm, the standard Leeds College of Art yearbook size. Champagne & Limousines is the font used throughout the book for titles. It is elegant, and the fonts curves work well in contrast to the square theme used throughout.

Purpose of Book
As well as a keepsake for students to look back on, showcasing what they have achieved, the book will also be used for the function of marketing, to help promote the course. The book also works as a professional catalogue, promoting 62 graduate designers to potential employers.

Content
The student showcase is featured throughout the yearbook, mixed in with quote pages and the body copy. Photographs from a range of course events and competitions have been provided to us by the course tutor.

THE JOURNEY

Photo Shoot
We worked with photography student Jessie Leong to take photographs of two pieces of each students work. We wanted professional, high quality images, photographed in the same lighting conditions each time, which is why we decided to stage this shoot rather than letting the students take the photographs.

The Tribe
Course tutor Duncan refers to his students as The Tribe, and a group shot of the students adds a personal touch. Each student is displayed fairly throughout the book, with one piece of work on show.

PDF
As the book is a PDF, it will only be viewed on screen, with the use of RGB colours meaning the use of brighter colours, to make the book eye-catching. It also allows the PDF to be interactive, meaning that viewers can access links. The book will be emailed out to a list of recipients, as well as on display at the end of year show, for visitors to look through. It will feature on the Leeds College of Art website, so future students can be inspired and find out more about the course. By creating the book as a PDF, it can be viewed by a wider audience than if only a print copy was available.

Roles
We all took part in regular yearbook meetings, as well as all working on the initial design development of the yearbook. The tasks were then split into roles, based on the skills of the group. Original grid design & PDF interactivity - Sophie Wilson Type setting and organising content - Claudia Griffin Colour scheme & cover design - Kirsty Hardingham Arranging image content & quote layout - Kirsty Alderson Photography - Jessie Leong (LCA Photography student)
