PhD Production of Butadiene from Ethyl Alcohol 2004

Abstract

An investigation was conducted to study the production of butadiene from ethyl alcohol process by catalytic treatment. One-and two step processes are employed in this study. The study includes preparing the necessary catalyst needed for the catalytic treatments, and employing theses catalysts in the one- and two-step processes. 80%MgO:20%SiO2 and 77%MgO:4%Cr2O3:19%SiO2 catalysts were prepared. The effect of MgO on SiO2 catalyst was also studied. 80%MgO:20%SiO2 are the optimum catalyst composition. Two commercial (47%ZnO:42%CuO:11-Al2O3 and 36%ZnO:54%Cr:10-Al2O3) were also studied. Operating conditions 200-400 C, and 0.2-3.25 h-1 LHSV and atmospheric pressure were investigated. 92wt.% ethyl alcohol was used as a feed in the one-step process and the effects of mole ratio of ethyl alcohol to acetaldehyde in the two-step process i.e. 1.5:1 up to 3:1 at various temperatures and LHSV were investigated in the present study. One-step process involves decomposition of ethanol to butadiene at 350 C, LHSV 0.42h-1 and atmospheric pressure using four catalysts. 80%MgO:20%SiO2 prepared catalyst gave conversion, per pass yield and ultimate yield 59.3%, 12.18% and 26% by moles respectively. While 77%MgO:4%Cr2O3:19%SiO2 prepared catalyst gave conversion, per pass yield and ultimate yield 59.87%, 23.79% and 48.3% by moles respectively. In the two step process, the reaction occurs in two steps. The first was the decomposition of ethanol to acetaldehyde, and the second step involves the reaction between ethanol and acetaldehyde to produce butadiene. At 400 C, LHSV h-1, and ethanol to acetaldehyde mole ratio of 2.76:1 using four catalysts. 47%ZnO:42%CuO:11-Al2O3 catalyst gave per pass yield and ultimate yield 8.03% and 28.3% by moles respectively. While 36%ZnO:54%Cr:10-Al2O3 commercial catalyst gave 13.62% per pass yield and 25.83% ultimate yield. 80%MgO:20%SiO2 prepared catalyst gave per pass yield and ultimate yield

( ) ( ) 18.24% and 40% by moles respectively. While 77%MgO:4%Cr2O3:19%SiO2 catalyst gave 19.26 mole% per pass yield and 40 mole% ultimate yield. Both steps gave side products such as ethyl acetate, acetone, acetic acid, etc. ranging from 15wt.% up to 67wt.% depending on catalyst type and operating conditions.
