Lately automobiles are getting improved fuel economy by exploiting a new controls approach that uses the waste

heat from vehicle engines. In a conventional vehicle Three-quarters of the energy in that pricey petroleum is wasted. Only about 25 percentage of the energy in every litre of gasoline you buy actually helps your vehicle to run. The rest is converted to heat, lost in the driveline, lost due to aerodynamic drag and braking. Among those the heat which is radiated uselessly off of your engine or blown out of your exhaust pipe is the maximum. It is about 65 percentage of the energy of the gasoline that is burnt inside the combustion chamber. The internal combustion engine is an engine in which the combustion of a fuel (normally a fossil fuel) occurs with an oxidizer (usually air) in a combustion chamber that is an integral part of the working fluid flow circuit. In an internal combustion engine (ICE) the expansion of the high-temperature and highpressure gases produced by combustion apply direct force to some component of the engine. We can achieve a better efficiency by incorporating a Rankine cycle in the system. Recycling exhaust heat and energy that is rejected from the engine has got to be the way forward in the future. This Rankine cycle can harness some of the wasted energy from the radiator to useful mechanical energy. The Rankine cycle is an idealised thermodynamic cycle of a heat engine that converts heat into mechanical work. The heat is supplied externally to a closed loop, which usually uses water as the working fluid. The Rankine cycle, in the form of steam engines generates about 90% of all electric power used throughout the world, including virtually all solar thermal, biomass, coal and nuclear power plants. In an automobile power plant we cannot directly attach a Rankine cycle since the quality of heat is low and the temperature of the engine block has to be maintained below 90%. Hence instead of rankine cycle an Organic Rankine Cycle is used. The working principle of the organic Rankine cycle is the same as that of the Rankine cycle. Instead of conventional steam which drives the turbine, in an ORC organic fluids or a refrigerant is used. The low boiling point and the saturated enthalpy values of the refrigerant are the sole reason for the incorporation of an Organic Rankine Cycle in the engines radiation system. Waste heat recovery is one of the most important development fields for the organic Rankine cycle (ORC). This has a huge potential in the future of automobile power plant design. The harnessed energy can be used in various ways like charging batteries of a hybrid, powering the air conditioner which otherwise would take the power directly from the engine, etc.
