Introduction
The rev of the engine. The roar as the tachometer climbs higher and higher. The woosh of of the wind and the blur of other cars left behind. The screech of the brakes during a quick turn. For more than 100 years, Americans have had a love affair with the automobile. From gridlock traffic in big cities to speeding down the open roads, it is hard to go a day without being behind the wheel of one of these great machines. And as the times have progressed, so has the technology. Cars today can reach 0-60 miles per hour in less than four seconds, pack more than 400 horsepower, and reach speeds of over 200 miles per hour. And it isnt just the engine thats getting better. Revolutions in navigation systems, airbags, and sound systems have made our cars safer and more fun to drive. With the large part vehicles play in everyday life, there should be many of them in d20 Modern, right? A quick glance at the rulebooks shows that this isnt quite the case. Between the d20 Modern and Urban Arcana sourcebooks, only twenty cars and trucks make an appearance. Not too bad, but there are far more cars and makers than are represented. And cars change every year, with better models and faster engines. So how to correct this problem? Simple. Compile an extensive database with every single car from a given model year. And The Blue Book was born. Looking for a certain car for your campaign? It can be found in this book. From performance machines and sporty compacts to rugged SUVs and trucks, this book contains all that is needed to create all the high-speed (or low-speed) chases imaginable. The Blue Book has everything needed to insert any 2005 car into d20 Modern. The car statistics were created with d20 Modern in mind, so no extra work is necessary. Just mix and enjoy.
New Rules
With so many cars to choose from, a few new rules are needed to keep order. Most importantly are new rules that govern the availability of cars. Just like in real life, heroes arent going to be able to find any car they want all the time. So here are some optional rules to help
Gamemasters control access to the automobiles in this book. At character creation, heroes may choose from any car in the book, granted they meet the Purchase DC according to the rules for purchasing equipment in d20 Modern. At any given time during an adventure or campaign, the heroes may want to purchase a car. If the location allows, the character can make a Gather Information check (DC 15) to find out whether or not car dealerships exist in that area. The Gamemaster should allow car dealerships to exist unless there is a justified reason for prohibiting them (for instance, the heroes are in a desert) or the hero misses the check. Only one check can be made per party. Upon a successful check, the Gamemaster rolls a d6 to determine the number of dealerships that exist within a reasonable distance (the GM may wish to make the heroes travel to a specific location). The GM then rolls one d100 for each dealership to determine which dealerships exist. The percentages are listed in Table 1-1. Once a dealership exists and the heroes have located it, then any car from that manufacturer is available for purchase. The heroes may not take 20 to purchase a car under these circumstances. Once dealerships have been determined for a specific location, they cannot be changed for that location. The heroes must travel to another location to find new dealerships. Heroes with specific feats may be able to get discounts on automobiles. Whenever a hero, either through a class ability or feat such as Shadow Resources, or through circumstances of the adventure or campaign, gains a contact in the automobile industry, that hero may
use this contact to get a discount price on an vehicle. When a hero gains a contact in the automobile industry, the GM must determine which manufacturer the contact is affiliated with (this can be done using Table 1-1). The contact can only be used to obtain cars from that manufacturer. If the contact is used, the purchse DC is lowered by d4. Retries are possible for different models from the same manufacturer, or for the same model after one week. Existing rules for contacts must be followed according to d20 Modern and Urban Arcana.
The Cars
The statistics in this book were written based on an article by Rich Redman on www.wizards.com, with a few modifications. Car specifications and performance numbers were found using various websites, most importantly www.vehix.com and www.autos.com. Purchase DC information came from Table 7-1 in d20 Modern. Here is the process used in order to help those who would like to build their own vehicle statistics. Crew: For almost all cars, this is 1. Passengers: This is more common sense than looking up actual numbers. Most four-door cars seat five, but for many compact cars, it is tough to fit five normal people confortably. The same goes for SUVs which claim to seat eight or more. Keep in mind the size and price of the car when determining the number of passengers. Cargo Capacity: This calculation is an educated guess. There is no mathmatical way to convert cubic feet to pounds, so trial and error is necessary. For the most part, multiplying the number of cubic feet by 20 should produce a reasonable estimate. Make sure to use the cargo capacity with all seats in place. Initiative: There is not really a good explanation of determining initiative, but -2 seems to be the norm. This is understandable considering that a person reacts slower when driving a car. Maneuver: This depends on the 060 time of the car. A chart, which was included in Richs article, was amended to eliminate guesswork. Table 2-1: Vehicle Maneuver Times 0-60 Time Maneuver Less Than 4.1 +3 4.1 - 5.0 +2 5.1 - 6.5 +1 6.6 - 7.5 +0 7.6 - 8.5 -1 Greater Than 8.5 -2 Top Speed: This number involves converting the top speed of the car from miles per hour to feet per round. Richs article has the full formula, but multiplying the top speed of the car by 1.76 converts it in one easy step. Round the answer off to the first two digits shows how many squares the car moves per round.
Defense: This depends on the size of the car, which will be discussed later. If the car is Large, Defense is 9. If the car is Huge, Defense is 8. Hardness: Because all cars are made of similar material, they all have a hardness of 5. Do not be misled into thinking that tougher cars (like the Hummer H2, for instance) should have a higher hardness. This is reflected in hit points. Hit Points: This depends on the curb weight of the car. A full chart of hit point correlations is available in Richs article. The following is a truncated chart. Table 2-2: Vehicle Hit Points Weight HP Weight 1,200 lbs. 24 3,000 lbs. 1,350 lbs. 25 3,500 lbs. 1,500 lbs. 26 4,000 lbs. 1,750 lbs. 27 4,500 lbs. 2,000 lbs. 28 5,000 lbs. 2,250 lbs. 29 5,500 lbs. 2,500 lbs. 30 6,000 lbs. 2,750 lbs. 31 7,000 lbs.

in the fact that there can be as much as a $30,000 difference between Purchase DCs. When determining DC, round to the nearest number. When stuck in the middle, remember that many dealerships offer deals on new cars, selling below MSRP. When in doubt, the lower number is a better guess and will make the car easier to obtain for players. Restriction: All cars require a license to drive, so a Licensed (+1) restriction is needed for all cars. Keep in mind, however, that some cars are rare or necessitate special costs when sold in the black market. In some situations, a Restricted (+2) value may be more appropriate. Statistics in this book are given purchase at a dealership. Other: Be sure to note the type car as well as its transmission. The car type may have an impact on a cars loading time (if applicable) and the number of people who can fit confortably in the car. The transmission is important to note if the campaign will be using the Stick Shift feat on page 5. Every effort was made to write the statistics in this book as accurately as possible. All performance statistics were obtained from third-party resources so as to eliminate bias from the parent company. When two different numbers were found, the one that provided a stronger vehicle was used. The statistics in this book were created by a human and therefore fallible. If information can be found that disputes a statistic in this book, the Gamemaster can determine which number to use. Purchase DCs are based on MSRPs during the 2005 model year. Statistics are based on specific trim types, which are included in some cases only to distinguish a specific car.
Size: The Size depends on the length and width of the car. Since each square is five feet by five feet, the length and width in squares can be determined by dividing the real length and width by 5, rounded up. Since all cars are between five and ten feet wide, they should all be two squares wide. However, they can be anywhere between ten and twenty feet long, or three and four squares. If a car is three squares long, it is Large. If it is four squares long, it is Huge. This sets the defense of the car as mentionedin the section above. Purchase DC: This can be the hardest statistic to determine. Comparing the MSRP of the car to Table 7-1 of d20 Modern is easy, but the difficulty lies
