Sheet (1) Hydraulic Design of Regulators

1. Figure (1) shows a main canal cross section in which a reinforced concrete regulator will be constructed. The maximum discharge through the regulator is Q = 45 m3/sec. The following data are also considered in the design: (i) The bridge width = 10.0 m and 2 side walks of 1.25 m each, (ii) The pier width = 1.0 m, (iii) Box and sloping wing walls are used for upstream and downstream sides, respectively, and (iv) CB = 14. It is required to: a) Give a complete hydraulic design of the regulator. b) Give the required floor length and thickness for percolation and scouring. c) Draw using a suitable scale each of the following items: i. Plan (H.E.R.) ii. Section Elevation, and iii. Section Side View 2. It is required to distribute the discharge passing through a main canal A-B into three branch canals B-C, B-D, and B-E by constructing three head regulators to act as a group at the inlet of each branch canal as shown in Figure (2). The cross section of the main canal A-B upstream the regulators is shown in Figure (3) while the cross sections of canals B-C, B-D, and B-E downstream regulators are shown in Figure (4). The maximum discharges passing through canals B-C, B-D, and B-E are 16, 26, and 22 m3/sec, respectively. The maximum heading up is 10 cm. It is required to: a) Design the water way dimensions for the three regulators, and calculate the actual downstream water level for each one. b) Draw neat sketches, for a plan of the group-regulators and complete cross sections downstream each one, showing all dimensions and levels. 3. A head regulator is constructed to feed branch canal from a main canal, as shown in Figure (5). The regulator has two vents of span 4.0 m each, and double gate of 1.6 m height for each one. The passing discharges through the branch canal and the corresponding downstream water depths are shown in the following table: Q (m3/sec) YDS (m) 2 0.35 5 0.6 10 1.14 12.5 1.45 19.25 1.55 15 1.72 18.50 1.92

If the lower gate is fixed and the upper gate is opened, draw the relationship between the discharge (Q) and the opening depth between gates (a). Find also the value of (a) for Q = 14.0 m3/sec. 4. Repeat problem (3), if the upper gate is fixed and the lower one is opened
